1 May 2009 Notes From The Chair The JetHawks Journal The Official Newsletter of the Flight Crew Booster Club of the Lancaster JetHawks Professional Baseball Club Well the season is well under way and we have had the typical April weather cold and windy. The team is performing well even though we do not have a winning record. The fielding has been sharp and the starting pitching strong for the most part. We need to keep in mind the minor leagues are for player development and some on field situations are allowed to continue so the Astro s can see how the players deal with adversity. In the stadium things are all new new owners, new GM, new food menu, and it is all shaping up to be an exciting experience. Bring your friends and neighbors out and enjoy the new atmosphere at the stadium they will enjoy the evening. Our annual Shirt Off Your Back game worn jersey auction will be on Saturday May 23 as part of Military Appreciation Weekend at the stadium. This year s jersey will be a brown camouflage. Starting at the top of the 7 th inning the jersey auction will commence in the tent on the third base side. So come out and make a bid on your favorite player s jersey. The usual Sunday pot lucks have been hampered by the late start time (6 PM) of Sunday games. We are looking for other alternatives to our pot lucks of the past and when the weather is warmer we may be able to resume Sunday pot lucks following the game. We have looked into Sunday Brunch, Saturday Breakfast, and a pre game lunch but the logistics, manager preference, and player availability make these events impractical. We need members to cook a post game meal for the players on Monday and Wednesday home games. If you can help please contact Kathy Leon at for details. Our Annual Player Appreciation Banquet will be on 10 August at the Elks club. Tickets will remain at $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Look for our sales point on the concourse prior to each home game. While the LA Times and Daily News downsize AV coverage the AV Press continues to keep the AV informed. The cost of a new or renewal subscription is $78 a year (normally $165). To get this rate you can contact a booster club member or if you call the AV Press please use code FR0102 when you order. For a renewal, your order must be placed no earlier than 30 days prior to your expiration date. This rate is open to anyone so tell your friends, and neighbors. The booster club receives $10 for each new subscription and $5 for each renewal. Point of Contact for this fund raiser is Wendy Richmond. Annual Board of Directors Elections Judy Lester is the chair for the election candidate search committee and will be assisted by Tim Buckley. If you desire to run for Vice Chairman, Treasurer, or one of the 3 Directors positions please see Judy. Per our By Laws, candidates for Vice Chairman and Treasurer must have at least one term as a Director. The only requirement for a Director position is a willingness to represent the membership. 2

Latex gloves and collection bags are provided. Baseball Rule of the Month The Infield Fly Rule At a recent JetHawks game High Desert had runners on first, second, and third with one out. The batter hit a high popup in the infield, the umpire called the infield fly rule but the runner on third took off for home plate before the ball was caught. The infielder dropped the pop fly and the runner scored. Should the run count? Yes the batter is out via the umpire calling infield fly but the runner may advance at his own risk. The ball remains alive and because the fielder dropped the ball the runner could advance without tagging up. Rule 2.00 Infield Fly 4

5 APRIL PLAYER OF THE MONTH Infielder: Chris Minaker, Outfielder: JB Shuck, Pitcher: Chia-Jen Lo, and Hitter: Marcos Cabral In addition to being awarded a beautiful plaque to commemorate the player s accomplishment each player was given gift certificates donated by Camille s Restaurant and Wal-Mart Super Stores BUS TRIPS The Booster Club has scheduled two bus trips for the upcoming baseball season. The first will be Saturday, May 16 to Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and the second on Saturday, August 8 to Bakersfield. Keep the dates in mind. If you haven't been on one of our bus trips, you're missing out. We have a great time. 5

6 DRAG QUEEN OF THE MONTH Post Game Meals The booster club has taken on the task of providing a post game meal for Monday and Wednesday home games. We need cooks from the membership to prepare the meals and monetary compensation is available. The meals need to be simple but hardy and healthy. To volunteer for this project please contact Kathy Leon. See s Candy Sales See s candy sales are on going Bars are $1.50 each and Suckers are 3 for $2. In addition to candy we have Gift Certificate ($14) for 1 pound of See s chocolates. These certificates are an excellent way to say happy birthday or just thanks. If you would like to help sell this product at your work or other gatherings please contact Arlene Belderok at Product can be obtained on consignment so you do not need to purchase and then resell the candy. Hooded Sweat Shirts We have one (1) size large and five (5) size Extra Large heavyweight hooded sweatshirts available for immediate delivery. Cost is $40 per sweatshirt. 7 Tail Gates Our tail gate events for 2009 have been set for 6/6, 7/11, and 8/22. Our next stadium Tail Gate is on June 6 th at 4 PM on the third base side parking lot. The Booster Club will provide Burgers and Hot Dogs. Members need to bring sides for approximately 10 people. If you have renewed and have not received your cards, Shirt or Pins please contact Curt Redecker. Thunder On The Lot The Booster Club will provide workers for this years Thunder on the Lot event. Thunder on the Lot is a two day event that raises funds for the Antelope Valley Child Services. The event is Saturday June 13 th (5 hours) and Sunday June 14 th (8 Hours) at the fairgrounds. We hope we can count on your support for this worthwhile event. Contact Scott Kellerman to sign up to work this worthwhile event. Bake Sale Our next stadium Bake Sale is June 6th. We need the membership to provide homemade baked goods and bring them to the stadium conference room prior to the game. Please package your baked goods in packages for sale at $1 per bag. Min loaves of bread should be wrapped for individual sale and the selling price will be determined based on loaf size. Point of Contact is Kathy Leon.
