2 LAST GAME February 20, 2011 Texas Pan American 5, Saint Louis 0 Edinburg Baseball Stadium EDINBURG, Texas The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on as the Broncs took down the Scorpions from the University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College with a 4-3 win Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs (5-0) have now won five straight and are off to their best start since 1988 when that edition of the Broncs also began 5-0. The Scorpions (10-3) have now lost two straight for the first time all season. The Broncs took the lead in the second inning earning a pair of two out runs. Adrian De La Rosa hit a screamer down the left field line with a pair of Broncs aboard, scoring Mike McCarthy from second to give the Broncs the 1-0 advantage. Alex Carnall, who walked earlier in the frame, scored later on a Moya wild pitch for UTPA's second run of the game. UTPA starter Kyle Kotchie (ND) was strong early allowing only a bunt single in his first five innings of the game. Kotchie pitched 5.2 innings, and did not allow an earned run walking only one and striking out six, but did not factor into the decision. The Scorpions would rally off of Kotchie in the sixth due to some defensive breakdowns. Scorpion second baseman Nick Loftis led off the frame reaching second on a dropped fly ball by Bronc shortstop Tom Sicking. After Jorge Camorlinga sacrificed him over to third, he scored on an RBI single by Joel Fernandez, for the first Scorpion run of the game. UTB/TSC took the lead in the sixth after another defensive miscue by UTPA. Felix Fanaselle hit an infield single to Bronc second baseman Roger Bernal, but would end up at second as Bernal threw the ball into the Scorpion dugout. The error allowed two Scorpions to cross home plate giving UTB/TSC a 3-2 lead. UTPA wasted no time with a rally as they regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Vinnie Mejia, who led off the inning with a single, scored on the tying run on an RBI single by Iradier Hernandez. Then with one out in the inning, Freshman sensation Colton Van Komen drove in another run on a pinch-hit fielders choice, scoring Stuart Macinnes to drive in the winning run. Cody Plunk (W, 1-0) pitched 3.1 innings of relief, while striking out two and not allowing a Scoprion base runner to earn the victory. Julian Moya (L, 1-2) took the loss for UTB/TSC, but pitched well in spurts. Plunk (1-0) NONE RECENT GAMES February 20, 2011 Texas Pan American 5, Saint Louis 0 Edinburg Baseball Stadium EDINBURG, Texas Michael Zouzalik pitched eight scoreless innings, and the University of Texas-Pan American defense turned four double plays in a 5-0 shut-out victory over Saint Louis University Sunday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs (4-0) won all four games to win the 2011 Al Ogltree Classic Tournament. The Broncs also swept all four games in last season's Al Ogletree Classic. The Billikens (2-2) won both their games against Illinois Chicago on Friday and Saturday. Zouzalik (W, 1-0) had a few struggles early including a bases loaded no-out situation in the second, but battled through for the victory. Zouzalik walked two and struck out four and gave up just five hits. Freshman sensation Colton Van Komen, who scored the winning run in Saturday night's 13-inning thriller, drove in the first two runs of the game by hitting his first career homer off of Saint Louis starter Zack Smith to give UTPA the 2-0 advantage. The Broncs added a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Roger Bernal drove in a run in the fifth to cap the scoring for UTPA. 3 February 3, 2011 Texas-Pan American 9, Illinois Chicago 1 Edinburg Baseball Stadium EDINBURG, Texas The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team stayed unbeaten on the young 2011 season, pounding out seven runs in the eighth to blast past the University of Illinois Chicago 9-1 in the fifth game of the 2011 Al Ogletree Sunday morning at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs got on the score board in the first inning as Tom Sicking walked to lead off the inning and later scored on the Matt Salemi wild pitch to give UTPA the 1-0 lead. Neither team was able to get a run across until the sixth inning when the Flames tied the game. Jason Ganek homered into the left-field bullpen with nobody on to tie the game at 1-1. That was he only run the Broncs would surrender the remainder of the game. The Broncs re-claimed the lead in the bottom half of the sixth as Angel Ibañez homered to left off of UIC reliever Eric Wyman to re-claim the lead for UTPA at 2-1. Timely hitting and three Flame errors resulted in a seven run eighth for the Broncs. Ibañez and Bernal reached to lead off the inning on a single and throwing error respectively. Following a Vinnie Mejia intentional walk, Stuart MacInnes lined the 2-2 Ganek offering to right, scoring Ibañez, making the score 3-1 UTPA. The next batter up was Mike McCarthy doubled over the head of the left fielder to drive in a pair and push the game out of reach at 5-1. Junior right-hander Jonathan Sa (W, 1-0) battled for seven strong innings of one-run ball striking out four Flames earned the victory. Arnoldo Franco pitched a pair of scoreless innings, striking out two for his first save of the season. Wyman took the loss for the Flames allowing the go-ahead run in his only inning of work in the sixth. UIC starter Matt Salemi pitched five innings and allowed one earned with a trio of walks and a pair of strikeouts in his first start of the season. 2/20/ R H E W/L SV HR Illinois-Chicago (L) Eric Wyman (0-1) UTPA X (W) Jonathan Sa (1-0) Arnoldo Franco (1) Jason Ganek (1) Angel Ibañez (1) February 3, 2011 Texas-Pan American 5, Saint Louis 4 (13) Edinburg Baseball Stadium EDINBURG, Texas Colton Van Comen scored the winning run on an Adrian De La Rosa RBI in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the University of Texas-Pan American baseball team past the Billikens of Saint Louis University 5-4 in the fourth game of the 2011 Al Ogletree Classic tournament Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The win gives the Broncs (2-0) back-to-back 5-4 wins to start the season, after beating Illinois-Chicago on Friday night by the same score. Van Comen, who entered game four hours after the first pitch was thrown, led the 13th inning off with a triple to the right-center field gap. Saint Louis (2-1) started the day with an impressive 17-7 victory over Illinois-Chicago in Saturday's matinee. They kicked off the scoring in the nightcap with a run in the first. Cody Cotter was hit by a Cody Plunk pitch to lead off the game and later advanced to third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Steve Fernandez singled in Cotter to give Billikens the 1-0 lead. Plunk left the game for UTPA after retiring only two batters. The Billikens added a pair of runs in the third to take a three run lead. Fernandez led off the inning with a single to left, and was followed by a Zach Miller double to left-center, putting a pair of Billikens into scoring position. Travis Parker's ground out scored Fernandez, and Marco DiRoma's single scored Miller. The Broncs began their rally in the bottom half the third. Angel Ibanez hit a one-out single to left field and scored one batter later on Roger Bernal's two run blast into the bullpen in left making the score 3-2 SLU. Vinne Mejia reached on an error by Fernandez in right. The next hitter up was Stuart MacInnes who drove the C.J. Rose offering over the wall in left, putting the Broncs in front 4-3. Jordan Hammerman tied the game at four in the top of the fifth with his double down the right field line, scoring Parker from second base. Arnold Franco (1-0) pitched a scoreless 13th inning to earn the victory for UTPA. Jon Levin (0-1) took the loss pitching an inning, and throwing to Van Comen and De La Rosa in the 13th. Neither started lasted long as Plunk faced just five batters, pitching.2 innings and allowing a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Rose lasted 2.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, walking one and striking out two. 3

4 February 3, 2011 Texas-Pan American 5, Illinois Chicago 4 Edinburg Baseball Stadium EDINBURG, Texas The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team used a three run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 5-4 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago in their opening game of the season and the ninth annual Al Ogletree Classic Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Junior right-hander Jonathan Delgado (1-0) threw six innings and allowed just one earned run striking out six to earn his first win of The Flames lost both their games on Friday, dropping the tournament opener to Saint Louis University earlier in the day. It was the second straight season opening win for UTPA. The Broncs beat UT-Brownsville in the 2010 season opener The Broncs (1-0) struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Iradier Hernandez was hit by a Charlie Weinberg pitch to lead off the frame. Adrian De La Rosa moved Hernandez into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Tom Sickling drove home the game's first run with an RBI single to left, giving the Broncs the early 1-0 advantage. Illinois-Chicago (0-2) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to claim their first lead. In the fourth Alex De La Rosa singled with a line drive to center and moved to third on a pair of UTPA passed balls. He scored on the Jason Ganek single tying the game at 1-1. In the fifth De La Rosa scored The lead for the Flames did not last long as the Broncs tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Carnall led off the inning with a double to left field. Carnall crossed home plate when Sickling's ground ball went underneath the glove of UIC second baseman Matt Serna, tying the game a 2-2. The Broncs offense rallied for a three run frame in the third to re-claim the lead. Roger Bernall led off the inning with a line-drive single to right. Vinnie Mejia tagged his 1-1 offering down the left field line, scoring Bernal and re-claiming the lead for UTPA 3-2. Three batters later, Hernandez singled with the bases loaded, scoring Mejia adding the second run of the inning. De La Rosa, sacrificed in another run on a safety squeeze bunt giving the Broncs the 5-2 advantage. The Flames made it interesting, adding a pair of runs in the seventh to make it a one-run game at 5-4. Roger Bernal came in from second base to close out the game in the ninth for the save. Weinberg (0-1) took the loss for the Flames allowing five runs, four earned, walking three batters and striking out three. 4

5 COACHING STAFF Head Coach: Manny Mantrana Manny Mantrana begins his third season as head baseball coach with The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program. The newly-named head baseball coach comes to the Rio Grande Valley after serving 12 seasons as head baseball coach at Saint Thomas University. During his tenure at STU, Mantrana tripled, from one to four, the program's number of trips to the College World Series and was named the winningest coach in STU history with an impressive (.691) career record with his 1997 season highlighted as the season with the most victories in program history with 54. While at STU, Mantrana served as the hitting and pitching coach for eight of his 12 seasons. Mantrana's squads appeared in three College World Series, 2007 as of recent, and nine overall postseason berths. He has been recognized as Southeast Coach of the Year on three occasions and has also received Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year honors on three separate occasions. He guided his first squad at STU, in 1996, to a Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championship, Southeast Region appearance and concluded his inaugural season with a record. Mantrana's second season as head coach for the Bobcats earned him his first trip to the College World Series as well as the Southeast Region Championship and Florida Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships. That season, the Bobcats finished with an impressive overall record. In 1999 and 2000, Mantrana led his squad to two more Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championships and Southeast Region Tournaments. The 2000 squad worked its way to the World Series, for the second time, with a record. The squad also captured the Super Regional Tournament as well as both the regular season and tournament championships for the Florida Sun Conference. His 2007 squad earned the third College World Series appearance with a record and added another Florida Sun Conference and Southeast Region Tournament Championship under their belts. Mantrana produced all-star athletes as over 40 of his players have received All-Conference or All-Region accolades with 20 of those players signing professional contracts. He also coached 10 All-American's, including five All-American scholar athletes. The development of each player was also something Mantrana sought out. Under Mantrana's guidance, about 95 percent of players who attended school for four years earned a degree. The three-time Florida Sun Conference and Southeast Region Coach of the Year began his coaching career as he served as head coach for his alma mater, Miami Jackson High School for four years. Mantrana then took an assistant coaching job at Miami-Dade Community College in 1995 for a year where his responsibilities were coaching infielders and hitters and also served as the recruiting coordinator. Before stepping out onto the coaching field, Mantrana was an accomplished player for Miami-Dade College, Middle Georgia Community College and LSU. Mantrana was at Miami-Dade for a year before transferring to Middle Georgia where he helped lead his team to a second-place finish at the Junior College World Series. While at Middle Georgia, he was named to the All-Tournament team at the JCWS and was named MVP of the region tournament. Mantrana spent his last two years of his college career at LSU before signing a professional contract. Mantrana was a 10th round pick for the Atlanta Braves organization in He went on to play for the Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets organizations. Mantrana earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Administration from STU in 1990 and then earned his master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from STU in Manny Mantrana is married to the former Marlane Schwartz and has a daughter, Maxine 5

6 Assistant Coach: Norberto Lopez Norbert Lopez begins his second season as an assistant coach for The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program. Lopez brings experience from all levels of baseball to the UTPA baseball program as he's worked with high school, college and youth national teams. The newly named assistant coach was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 1999 in which he spent three years in the system. Lopez advanced to AAA and made an appearance in major league camp. In his most recent coaching experience, Lopez was an assistant coach for Florida Atlantic University where he helped his team achieve a.341 batting average with 93 homeruns in 2007 and a.321 batting average with 99 homeruns in Before coaching two seasons at FAU, Lopez spent two years at Broward Community College where he took the team to a third place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series. Serving as the hitting and catching coach, he saw his team hit.301, set the home run record at the state tournament and won the Florida Community College Activities Association state title. With all his hard work with the Broward Seahawks, Lopez was named the hitting and catching coach for the USA Baseball Youth National Team. He guided the team to a gold medal at the COPABE 'AA' Youth Pan Am Championships in Venezuela. Lopez graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a bachelor's degree in business administration in In 2006, he earned a master's in exceptional student education from Nova Southeastern. Lopez currently resides in Edinburg with his wife Cheryl. Assistant Coach: Robert Clayton The 2011 baseball season will be Robert Clayton's first with the UTPA after beginning his coaching career as a student assistant coach for his alma mater Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. At Cumberland Coach Clayton worked with the pitching staff, catchers and on Cumberland's recruiting efforts. In 2010 Clayton helped lead a Bulldog team to a school record 58 victories to only nine losses and the 2010 NAIA national championship. Coach Clayton worked with several outstanding players included 5 NAIA All-Americans, two of which were on the pitching staff Coach Clayton assisted. Before joining Cumberland, Clayton was an assistant coach at Friendship Christian School in Lebanon, TN where he helped them to a final four appearance in the Tennessee state playoffs. Coach Clayton has also coached elite summer teams at the high school level and has been an instructor at various camps across the country. As a player Coach Clayton led Broward Community College in Davie, FL to the Junior College World Series in 2006 leading the staff in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. In 2007 he led Cumberland University to the NAIA College World Series leading the staff in wins and innings pitched. In 2007 he was also named to the NAIA All-America second team after posting a12-3 record with a 2.67 ERA. In 2008 Clayton was named as NAIA pre-season All- American. Coach Clayton, originally from Miami, FL, graduated from Cumberland University with a bachelor's degree in fitness and wellness. He currently lives in McAllen. Before moving to Texas, the Calif.-native worked with two California high schools, serving as the head coach of Claremont High School's fall program in 2004 and as an assistant at Newbury Park High School from In 2000, Weiss was an assistant coach at Glendale College in Glendale, Calif., and helped steer the Vaqueros to the Elite 8 State Tournament - the highest tournament finish in school history. Weiss made his coaching debut at his alma mater, leading the Agoura High School summer league in 1998 and In two years, his teams earned a combined 18-9 mark and a league championship (1998). A two-sport athlete, Weiss played one season of collegiate football at Leigh University before transferring to Claremont McKenna College where he was a three-year member of the basketball team and two-year member of the football team. 6
