3 For Release: May 20, 2014 Sports Information Office Cortland Baseball Earns 12th Trip to Division III World Series; Red Dragons to Face Salisbury University Friday Afternoon in Wisconsin The SUNY Cortland baseball team earned its 12th trip to the NCAA Division III World Series and its sixth in 10 years by defeating Kean University, 10-1, Sunday afternoon in the championship round of the New York Regional in Newark, N.Y. The Red Dragons (35-8) will face Salisbury University (37-7) during the opening day of competition Friday, May 23, at 4:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. Eastern) at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis. (near Appleton). The eight-team, double-elimination tournament runs until Tuesday, May 27. Other first-round matchups Friday (all times local) are: the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) (37-7) versus defending national champion Linfield College (Ore.) (37-7) at 10 a.m.; Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio) (29-18) versus Emory University (Ga.) (34-11) at 1:15 p.m.; and last year s national runner-up, the University of Southern Maine (35-13), versus the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (40-7) at 7:45 p.m. The Cortland-Salisbury winner and loser will match up with the Southern Maine/Wisconsin-Whitewater winner and loser, respectively, on Saturday. The tournament features four schools that have won national titles previously. Linfield won last year, Southern Maine has won twice (1991, 1997), St. Thomas has won twice (2001, 2009) and Wisconsin- Whitewater won in In addition, Cortland has finished second twice (2005, 2010), St. Thomas has been runner-up twice (1999, 2000), Emory finished second in 2007 and Southern Maine placed second last year. Cortland is 3-4 all-time versus Salisbury, including a split of two regular-season games this past February at Salisbury. The teams met once previously in the World Series, with Salisbury winning, 6-4, in Cortland s 12 World Series appearances are the most by any Division III school since the division first adopted an eight-team field in In addition to their national second-place finishes in 2005 and 2010, the Red Dragons also finished third in both 1997 and 1998, fourth in 2007 and 2012, and tied for fifth in 1999, 2000 and Cortland, led by 15th-year head coach Joe Brown, was seeded first in the eight-team New York Regional. The Red Dragons opened with a 6-1 win over Castleton (Vt.), followed by a 14-5 victory over Farmingdale State, a 3-2 decision against Amherst (Mass.) and a 10-1 win over Kean (N.J.) in the finals. Four Red Dragons were named to the New York Regional All-Tournament Team. Junior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) was the regional s Most Outstanding Player. III coaches with 10 years as a head coach. * Cortland won its 32nd State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and its 16th in the last 18 years. The Red Dragons captured the regular-season crown with a 15-3 record and won the conference tournament with three wins in as many games. * Cortland won the NCAA Newark (N.Y.) Regional with a 4-0 record. The Red Dragons defeated Castleton State (Vt.), 6-1, Farmingdale State, 14-5, Amherst (Mass.), 3-2, and Kean (N.J.), Senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi was named the regional s Most Outstanding Player after batting.571 (8-for-14) with two doubles, three walks, nine RBI and four runs. Of those, only four Chris Jackson, Tim Panetta, P.J. Rinaldi and Max Rosing saw playing time at the 2012 Series. * Senior third baseman Anthony Iacomini was named the SUNYAC Player of the Year. Joining Iacomini on the All-SUNYAC team were junior outfielders Donny Castaldo and Vinny Bomasuto, senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi and junior pitcher Brandon McClain on the first team, senior first baseman Max Rosing and sophomore outfielder Conrad Ziemendorf on the second team, and sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio as an at-large selection. * Seven Cortland players were selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-New York Region team. Firstteam honorees were senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi, junior pitcher Brandon McClain and sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio. Second-team choices included senior catcher Tim Panetta, senior first baseman Max Rosing, senior third baseman Anthony Iacomini and junior outfielder Vinny Bomasuto. * Five Red Dragons earned All-New York Region honors by D3baseball.com. Senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi was a firstteam all-region choice. Junior pitcher Brandon McClain, senior third baseman Anthony Iacomini, sophomore outfielder Conrad Ziemendorf and sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio were named to the all-region second team. In addition, Joe Brown was chosen as the D3baseball.com New York Region Coach of the Year. * Brandon McClain is only the fourth pitcher in school history to reach the 10-win mark in a season. Ray Angelucci won a school-record 12 games in 2012 and Mike Howell won 11 times in McClain is 10-1 this season and Phil Tyskewicz was 10-1 in * Six players on Cortland s NCAA Regional roster last week started their collegiate careers in Division I programs. Anthony Iacomini was a redshirt at the University of South Carolina during their 2010 national championship season; he also played in 32 games at St. John s (N.Y.) in Mark Palumbo pitched at Binghamton University for parts of three seasons (three games in 2013, seven games in 2012 and eight games in 2011), while Mitch Hollander played in 10 games at Binghamton in Zach Ferris pitched at the University of Hartford in 2011 (one appearance) and 2012 (17 appearances with nine starts). Tim Panetta was a redshirt member of the University of Connecticut program before his four-year Cortland career. Brandon Serio started as a redshirted player at the University of Rhode Island. * Cortland is 3-4 all-time versus Salisbury, its first-round opponent, including a split of two regular-season games at Salisbury this past February. The teams have met once previously in the World Series, with Salisbury winning, 6-4, in * Against its potential second-day World Series opponents, Cortland is 1-2 versus Wisconsin-Whitewater and 3-1 against Southern Maine. The Red Dragons lost to Whitewater in the World Series in the 2005 championship round and in a 2008 elimination game. Two of Cortland s wins versus Southern Maine have come in World Series play (2-1 in 1997 and 10-5 in 2001). The teams met in Florida this March, with the Huskies winning, * Against the other half of the World Series bracket, Cortland is 1-1 against Linfield, 1-3 versus St. Thomas and 0-2 against Emory, and has never faced Baldwin Wallace. Cortland s two games with Linfield were both in the 2010 World Series. The Red Dragons three losses to St. Thomas have all been in World Series play (2000, 2001 and 2012), while one of Cortland s losses to Emory occurred in the 2007 Series. ODDS AND ENDS... * Former Cortland baseball outfielder C.B. Bucknor has been a major league baseball umpire since 1999 and was inducted into the school s C-Club Hall of Fame in He was recognized this past April in an NCAA 40-in-40 profile as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of NCAA Division III. * A pair of former Cortland athletes in other sports have Appleton/Green Bay area ties. Former Cortland men s ice hockey goalie Derek Lalonde has been the head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League (USHL) since August He led the team to both the Anderson and Clark Cups in his first season. Former Red Dragon football defensive lineman R-Kal Truluck (TRUE-luck) played for the Green Bay Packers in 2004 as part of his five seasons in the NFL. * SUNY Cortland is the summer training camp location for the New York Jets. The team first came to Cortland in 2009 and has been there every summer, other than 2011 due to the NFL lockout. * Cortland alumna Ann E. Dunwoody 75 is the first female four-star general in U.S. military history. A former Red Dragon gymnast and tennis player, Dunwoody received the Theodore Roosevelt Award, the NCAA s top honor, in 2011.
7 Joe Brown Head Coach - Cortland Baseball Joe Brown has led Cortland to a combined record (prior to the 2014 NCAA World Series), 15 NCAA Division III tournament appearances, eight World Series showings and 13 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) titles in his first 15 seasons as the Red Dragons head coach since assuming the role in His.783 winning percentage (prior to the 2014 season) was the best of any active coach nationally (NCAA Div. I, II or III) with at least 10 years experience, and the third-best all-time among all Div. III coaches with 10 years as a head coach. In 2014 (prior to NCAA World Series), Brown has guided Cortland to a 35-8 record and the SUNYAC title. The program reached the 30-win mark for the 14th time in Brown s tenure and extended its streak of NCAA Div. III tournament appearances to 22 straight years the longest active run nationally. In 2013, Brown guided Cortland to a record. Cortland won the SUNYAC title and tied for ninth nationally after finishing second at the NCAA Div. III New York Regional. In 2012, Brown led the Red Dragons to a record, a SUNYAC title and a fourth-place national finish at the World Series. The team posted its fifth 40-win season under Brown. In 2011, Cortland qualified for the NCAA Div. III playoffs, finished 36-10, won the SUNYAC title and tied for ninth nationally after placing second at the NCAA Div. III New York Regional. In 2010, Brown led Cortland to a record and a second-place national finish at the NCAA Div. III World Series. The national runner-up showing was Cortland's second, both under Brown, with the first coming in In 2009, Brown led Cortland to a mark. The Red Dragons won the SUNYAC title and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs. In 2008, Brown's team enjoyed a 42-5 season that featured a school-record 38-game winning streak. Cortland won the NCAA New York Regional title and tied for seventh place at the World Series. In 2007, Brown guided Cortland to a 42-7 record and a fourth-place national finish with a 2-2 mark at the World Series. Brown's 2005 squad finished second nationally and enjoyed the highest win total in school history with a record. His 2000 and 2001 squads also won NCAA New York Regional titles and tied for fifth nationally each year. His 2003 and 2006 teams each tied for ninth nationally and his 2002 and 2004 teams both tied for 17th. In 2000, Brown had the best season of any Cortland first-year head baseball coach, leading the Red Dragons to a 36-9 record, an NCAA Division III New York Region title and a tie for fifth place at the World Series. In 2001, his squad finished 34-11, winning a regional title and once again tying for fifth nationally at the World Series. In 2002, Cortland finished the season and participated in the NCAA Division III regionals. In 2003, the Red Dragons were 35-11, advanced to the championship game of the NCAA regionals and finished tied for ninth nationally. In 2004, the Red Dragons finished and earned one of three national Pool C at-large tournament berths. In 2006, Cortland posted a 39-9 record and advanced to the NCAA regional finals. Brown has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) New York Region Coach of the Year eight times (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012) and the SUNYAC Coach of the Year on four occasions (2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008). He was also the inaugural winner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Division III Coach of the Year award in Twenty-two of his players have been chosen as All-Americans, including six who were also selected in the professional baseball draft. In all, 17 of Brown s players have advanced to play professionally, including two selections in the 2006 draft, one in 2007 and one in Prior to his promotion to head coach, Brown was the top assistant coach and pitching coach for Cortland teams that made seven straight NCAA Division III tournament appearances from 1993 to 1999 and four World Series showings between 1995 and He also assisted with team recruiting duties. His Cortland hurlers were ranked in the top 25 nationally in team earned run average for five of six seasons between During that time, four Cortland pitchers earned All-America honors and two were drafted professionally. From , Brown was the head coach of the Ithaca Lakers in the summer Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League (NCBL). The most successful coach in league history, he led the Lakers to three league titles, three runner-up finishes and two third-place showings in eight seasons. He coached more than 25 players who moved on to the professional ranks, including major leaguers Brad Lidge and Scott Sauerbeck. Brown returned to summer coaching in 2006 and again in 2008 as the head coach of the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Sanford Mainers. He led the Mainers to the 2008 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) title. In the summer of 2014 he will begin his second year as head coach of the NECBL s Vermont Mountaineers. Born in Clifton Springs, N.Y., and raised in Maine, Brown moved back to New York and graduated as a three-sport letterwinner from Canandaigua Academy in He was inducted into the Canandaigua Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in A 1990 graduate of Ithaca College, Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He played four years of baseball for the Bombers and was a member of the school's 1988 NCAA Division III championship squad. Upon graduation from Ithaca, he served for one season as adjunct faculty instructor and assistant baseball coach at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. He earned a Master of Science in Sport Studies, concentrating in sports psychology, from Miami (Ohio) University in 1992 while serving as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant baseball coach for the Division I Red Hawks.
