Akron clubbed five homers, tied for the most ever given up by the Curve in franchise history. Jeremy Lucas and Bradley Zimmer both homered twice and Clint Frazier added the other big fly. Curve starting pitcher Cody Dickson issued a career-worst seven walks over his 3.1 innings. Eric Wood drove an RBI double in the eighth to plate the only Altoona run of the night. Brett McKinney pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. TONIGHT: The Curve face the RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, play in the second of a three-game series at PNG Field. The Curve are coming off of dropping 2-of-3 against Harrisburg to open the season at home. Akron swept the Bowie Baysox down in Maryland to start the season. Tonight s game is the second of 21 games that will be played between the two team this year, with 11 being played in Altoona. FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander David Whitehead makes his Pirates organization debut and the first Double-A start of his career. The Columbus, Ohio native was traded from the Phillies in December for RHP Charlie Morton. The Phillies drafted Whitehead in the 34th round of the 2013 draft out of Elon University in North Carolina. Last year, Whitehead made 25 starts for Clearwater in the Florida State League, going 9-11 with a 4.44 ERA. For more on Whitehead, see page two. FOR AKRON: Right-hander Dace Kime makes his Double-A debut for Akron. He was drafted in the third round in 2013 by the Cleveland Indians out of Louisville. Last season, Kime went 3-8 with a 4.42 ERA in 22 starts for A-Adv. Lynchburg in the Carolina League after beginning the year with six starts for Single-A Lake County in the Midwest League. He was one of the top strikeout pitchers in the NCAA during his final season at Louisville in 2013, averaging strikeouts per nine innings pitched. THIS YEAR S CURVE: The 2016 Curve roster has 12 players that have worn a Curve uniform prior to this season. 13 will be playing at the Double-A level for the first time in their career. There are 12 pitchers and 13 position players on the Curve roster, including one member of the Pirates 40-man roster (Harold Ramirez). The average age of the Curve s Opening Day roster is E.L. Western)...T-3rd Games Ahead/Behind A NEW SKIPPER: Former Major League All-Star Joey Cora takes over as the ninth manager in franchise history. He was officially announced as the new skipper for the Curve on December 15, The native of Caguas, Puerto Rico spent 11 seasons in the majors with San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians. He was an A.L. All-Star in 1997 with Seattle. Following his playing career, Cora spent eight seasons on the staff of manager Ozzie Guillen with the White Sox from and one season as the bench coach with the Miami Marlins in Cora last managed in the minor in 2003 with Savannah of the South Atlantic League, then a Montreal Expos affiliate. He also guided the Appalachian League s Kingsport Mets in 2001 and Across three seasons, he is as a minor league manager. Cora replaces Tom Prince, who guided the Curve for one season and is now the Pirates Minor League Field Coordinator. PROSPECT WATCH: The Curve roster currently features five of MLB.com s preseason top 30 Pirates prospects: Reese McGuire (5), Harold Ramirez (6), Clay Holmes (15), Barrett Barnes (20) and Tyler Eppler (28). Five players are also featured on Baseball America s Top 30 Pirates prospect list: Ramirez (5), McGuire (6), Holmes (19), Barnes (24) and Jose Osuna (30). B.A. also named Ramirez as the organization s Best Hitter for Average, Eppler as having the Best Changeup and McGuire as the Best Defensive Catcher. SPRING TRAINING: Prior to heading north to Altoona, 13 members of the Curve roster played in Major League Spring Training games for the Pirates this year. Eleven position players, including Jon Schwind, Jose Osuna, Harold Ramirez, Reese McGuire, Barrett Barnes, Chris Diaz, Erich Weiss, Eric Wood, Stetson Allie, Edwin Espinal and Anderson Feliz all got plate appearances in big league games. Relievers Montana DuRapau and Dovydas Neverauskas were the only two pitchers on the Curve roster that saw action in MLB Spring Training games. GOING STREAKING: Curve relief pitcher Josh Smith extended his scoreless streak to 19-innings after tossing a scoreless seventh frame yesterday in relief working despite issuing three walks. Smith s streak dates back to July 20, 2015 and now spans 14 outings, during which he has fanned 10 batters, walked nine and decided in a victory (8/7/15 v. RIC). The Missouri southpaw also saw his ERA drop more than two full points last season, finishing 2015 with a 5.29 ERA after beginning the streak with a 7.34 clip. GLOBAL AFFAIR: Seven different countries are represented on Altoona s Opening Day roster, including the United States (17), Canada (1), Venezuela (2), the Dominican Republic (2), Colombia ON THE HOMESTAND (1), Taiwan (1) and Lithuania (1).
