This season marks the second consecutive season that NIU has had multiple players on national watch lists. Adam Holdenrid earned the MAC West Pitcher of the Week award on March 4 after notching a 3-1 victory over Southern Illinois. Two years removed from Tommy John Surgery, Holdenrid posted his highest strikeout total (six) since the 2005 season, his freshman campaign. Senior Jeff Thomas enters the week riding a career-best nine-game hitting streak. He batted.588 with 10 hits in four games against Texas State and Texas Tech during the weekend. WHITE SOX, ROYALS REACH OUT As part of the Huskies season-opening trip to Arizona, the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals each honored the team prior to their Feb. 27 Cactus League openers. Head coach Ed Mathey and pitcher Trevor Feeney threw out the first pitch prior to the White Sox-Rockies game in Tucson as the Sox wore NIU baseball hats that each player will autograph for an auction to benefit the university s February 14th Student Scholarship Fund. In Surprise, senior outfielders Jeff Thomas and Danny Reed threw out the first pitch prior to the Royals-Rangers game and afterwards Kansas City manager Trey Hillman and former standout Frank White spoke to the team. LONE STAR LIVES The Huskies do not have any Texas natives on their roster, but four players were born in the Lone Star State: Justin Behm (Houston), Andy Deain (Fort Worth), Jordin Hood (Carrollton) and Matt Jernstad (Belle County). TEXAS AS A SECOND HOME Northern Illinois will play 10 days over eight days on its spring trip to Texas that includes games in four different cities (San Marcos, San Antonio, Frisco and Dallas). With 22 home games scheduled this season (21 at Ralph McKinzie Field) and 15 contests at The Ralph a year ago, the Huskies can claim the Lone Star State as their second home. ARE YOU BEING WATCHED? Junior reliever Andy Deain and junior catcher Matt Behren have earned spots on three national award watch lists this season. Deain is one of 36 players and the lone MAC representative on the Roger Clemens Award (Pitcher of the Year) list after entering the year with his name on the Brooks Wallace Award (National Player of the Year) list. LAND OF LINCOLN LEADERS Northern Illinois is one of just three Division I Illinois schools to post three 30-plus win seasons in the past five years (with Southern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago). Along the way, the Huskies have made a habit of winning their games against intrastate opposition under Ed Mathey, compiling a sparkling (.688) record since 2003 for the highest victory total of any Illinois team versus in-state opponents during that span. Over the past two seasons, NIU has a 22-6 (.786) record against Division I intrastate foes, including an 11-2 mark in 2006 when they notched wins over all seven Land of Lincoln opponents to claim the Illinois state championship. GETTING TO KNOW YOU Including the season opening games against Portland and Hawai i, Northern Illinois has a total of six first-time opponents on its 2008 schedule. The Huskies have their initial meetings with Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Oklahoma and Dallas Baptist in March. BATTLE TESTED Northern Illinois has been anything but shy when it comes to scheduling the top programs in college baseball. During Ed Mathey s tenure, the Huskies have made trips to take on nationally-ranked foes Arizona State, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Florida Atlantic. NIU has been close in its bid for a major upset, ending two games with the go-ahead run at the plate or on base at eventual College World Series participant and 12th-ranked Arizona State in One year earlier, the Huskies dropped a one-run game at No. 5 Nebraska. Future NIU opponents include

3 HEAD COACH ED MATHEY Highlights of the Ed Mathey Era at Northern Illinois... On the verge of becoming NIU s career victory leader and was the fastest to reach 100 wins. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT 17 players have signed pro contracts, including an active streak of five years with at least one Major League affiliate signee. Coached the first Huskie to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League in two decades in 2006 and sent two players in Produced school s first Division I All-American and national award finalist (Matt German in 2007). ACADEMICS Totaled 32 NIU Huskie Scholars, nine NIU Victory Scholars, and four Academic All-MAC selections in the past five seasons. more college baseball powers with games against Mississippi State, Arizona State, Oregon State, Missouri, Notre Dame and USC in the next two seasons. ROAD WARRIORS As with most northern schools, the Huskies are forced to hit the road for warmer weather to play the early portion of their schedule. This season, that stretch is further exaggerated with the first two Mid-American Conference series on the road. Northern Illinois is slated to play its first 17 games on the road before hosting Bradley in a March 25 doubleheader for its only March home date at Ralph McKinzie Field. A total of 21 of the Huskies first 23 games will be away from home. NIU s previous high number of games away from home to start a season under Ed Mathey came in 2006 when the Huskies played 20 contests games before hosting their first game in DeKalb. ALL IN THE FAMILY The surname Badgley is synonymous with Northern Illinois baseball as outfielder/pitcher Nick becomes the third member of the family to don the Cardinal and Black. The latest Badgley was a junior college All-American last season and succeeds brothers Dan ( ) and Mark ( ), who both pitched for the Huskies. Younger brother Zach signed a National Letter of Intent with Northern Illinois in November and will be a freshman on the 2009 team. All told, NIU has had a Badgley on the roster every season except one (2002) since 1997, a trend that could eventually span 16 seasons when the youngster brother, Zach, is scheduled to be a senior on the 2012 squad. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Ed Mathey has had 17 players sign professional contracts during his five seasons at Northern Illinois, including an active streak of five years with at least Major League affiliate signee. Most recently, pitchers Mark Badgley and Matt German signed with Florida Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies following the completion of their eligibility in Both hurlers pitched for their respective organization s Class A affiliates last season with German earning a promotion to the South Atlantic League. Also signing professionally after his senior season a year ago was Scott Simon, who inked a contract with the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League. The trio of Badgley, German and Simon are currently active in professional baseball. GENTLEMEN AND SCHOLARS Northern Illinois baseball continued its success in the classroom with a total of 13 players posting cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or better through the fall. Pat Minogue and freshman Zach Oates and Tom Zelasko comprised the trio of players who earned Victory Scholar ( GPA) recognition. Huskie Scholar ( ) accolades went to 10 players: Brad Allen, Dan Atkenson, Nick Badgley, Cody Beck, Matt Behren, Joe Buonavolanto, Joe Etcheverry, Tim Kamin, Marvin Sanchez and Bobby Stevens. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Northern Illinois selected four captains for the 2008 season, all of whom are juniors. Catcher Matt Behren, outfielder Pat Minogue and pitcher Brian Smith are the elder statesmen, having used redshirt seasons during their college career, and are joined by shortstop Bobby Stevens.
