Officially, we only had 11 members registered out of approximately 500 total that were there. Somewhat of a disappointment but I know from personal experience that you can not make all of them. Those of us that participated in the bike giveaway had about a 1 in 200 chance of winning a new Sportster. Someone from the Wichita Chapter won it. The motorcycle races on Friday night were pretty awesome as well. Next year s rally will be a Rolling Rally. It will be held May 29, 30 and 31. Thursday it will be in Salina, Friday in Dodge City and Saturday in Liberal. The other bid for the Rally was the Topeka Chapter and they have been given the nod to host the 2015 Rally. Do not forget that the July meeting will start at 6:30 and we will then head out at 6:45 to ride to Rock Springs Camp to spend some time with the MDA campers. I am looking forward to this. Just trying something different for our Chapter meeting to see how it goes and spend some time with some great kids. As we will be shifting to summer heat riding very soon remember to keep hydrated. You can become dehydrated very quickly in the summer heat. Drink plenty of non alcoholic fluids. One last thought. There are two types of people in this world, people who ride motorcycles and people who wish they could ride motorcycles. Ride Safe.

Minutes Sue Gwaltney secretary Director Mike Rhodes called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 10, A moment of Prayer/Silence was observed for our past friends and soldiers serving stateside and overseas, and for our friends and families who are in need of our prayers. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Mike welcomed all who were present, including new members Michael Sharpes who rides a 2011 Street Bob, Chris Dearborn who rides a Fatboy Lo, Ryan Young who rides a Fatboy Lo, Franklin Gonzalez who rides a 2013 Heritage Softtail, and Mike Manning who rides a Sportster 72. Birthdays to celebrate this month include Chris Dearborn 6/4, Dan Jones 6/10, Norma Ford 6/ 15, Mark Sanders 6/19, Paul Wright 6/22, and Tim Grosser 6/2. Anniversaries celebrated in the month of June include Dan and Shirley Jones 6/10 and Ryan Young and his wife on 6/2. May minutes were posted on the Junction City H.O.G. Chapter website. Good of the order: Our chapter members signed a sympathy card for Daryl Zumbrunn s wife Carolyn and family. Daryl passed away on May 27. Thoughts and prayers were sent in a get well card to RaeLynn Wadsworth after recovering from surgery. Old Business: 1) Our chapter manned a booth at Armed Forces Day on May 18 held at Heritage Park. Chapter members sold tickets for $5 per ticket for a chance to win an 883 Iron Sportster. Tickets to win a Harley basket were also sold as one of our chapter s fundraiser for $1 a ticket. Chapter members who helped set up and man the booth were Mike Rhodes, Carol Ebersole, Deb Auld, Orin Auld and Sue Gwaltney. 2) Run for the Wall riders made a stop in Junction City on May 19. Over half of the 600 zipper pulls were passed out at the Nazarene Church where the riders stopped for a ceremony and dinner. Members present to help pass out the zipper pulls were Claudia Perry, Carol Ebersole, Kevin Connell, Karen Connell and Sue Gwaltney. 3) Eleven chapter members attended the Kansas State H.O.G. Rally which took place in Park City from May 30 through June 1. 4) Cox Bros BBQ hosted BBQ, Bikes and Beer on June 1 to celebrate the end of National BBQ Month from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. A bike show took place during the celebration. Orin and Deb Auld tied for first place for best bike, winning a free 10 person party package. Johnny Ryan and James Miller tied for 2nd place, each receiving a $50 gift certificate. 5) Johnny Ryan, James Miller and Chris Dearborn participated in the Relay for Life Event, which occurred May 31-June 1. Scott participated in the event by wearing a pink tutu at City Cycle Sales on May 30 for Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising. New Business: 1) 2014 Kansas State H.O.G. Rally will be a rolling rally beginning in Salina on May 29, then to Dodge City on May 30 and ending in Liberal on May 31. The 2015 rally will be held in Topeka. 2) The July 8 H.O.G meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. At 6:45, our chapter will leave for the MDA Camp at Rock Springs to interact and show our bikes to the children. Scott Templeton will provide the children an opportunity to ride in his side car. The children are only allowed to ride in a side car. 3) MDA fundraising events which will occur August 17-18, is in the planning stages. Members are asked to help with collecting donations for fundraising purposes. 4) Our chapter is entered in the 4th of July parade. Director Mike Rhodes will try to have our chapter lined up at the front of the parade to avoid motorcycles overheating. More information will be provided at a later date with details about the parade. Scott and Bonnie Templeton plan on having their annual cookout at their house after the parade. 3 JUNE (Minutes continued from previous page) be sent out with more information about the picnic as plans are finalized. 5) Johnny Ryan is planning a ride to Nicodemus, Kansas on the last weekend of July. More details about the ride will be sent to the members in an at a later date. Scott sets up the tables and chairs for our meetings, assists in setting up for events and ensures our chapter has prizes for MDA. Editor: Wanda Allen-Not Present Road Captain: Gerry Jean-Upcoming rides include a breakfast ride to the Whistle Stop Café in Walton, Kansas on Saturday, June 15. Kickstands up at 9:45 a.m., leaving from City Cycle Sales. Sunday, June 16, a Roller Coaster Ride will start at Sapp Brothers at 10:15 a.m. for a 260-mile ride. The group will stop somewhere on the route for lunch. July 20, 5-in-1 ride, which is riding five peaks in one day, will be led by the Pikes Peak HOG Chapter in Colorado Springs. Membership: Vonda Copeland-Vonda reported two new members in our chapter which brings the total membership to 115. Bozo: Carol Ebersole was nominated for losing her husband Steve during a guided tour of the Salt Mine in Hutchinson, one of the planned events for the Kansas State Rally. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m. The next meeting will be Monday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m.

4 4 JUNE 2013 Tech Tip Dean Mizes service manager Spark plugs How long do they last? Nowadays it is normal for us to replace them at 10k miles. I will replace them sooner if they have been in a few years or look rusty. Back about 20 or more years ago they were replaced much more often because of the richer running engines, poor oil seals the engines used and the leaded gasoline. I used to carry spare plugs with me and sometimes changed them out on the road because the bike was running bad or didn t run at all. I have seen some of the newer Harleys come in with the same plugs in it for over 50k miles and still running good. The plugs are cheap and sometimes it can make the engine run so much smoother and better. jmadog Jeff Maddox sales Posted on October 29, See more of Jeff s blog at Over time I ve come to notice that all of my bikes have improved through the years. Suspension, handling, fuel injection and looks to name a few. Style and appeal are a matter of taste, and if I do say so myself, mine is about average. I have taken it for granted that the next bike will be better than the last in terms of reliability and ride ability, so it s always been onward and upward when a trade happens. And as the bikes get better, the ride and experience should get better as well. And it does. But the fun we have as we ride really hasn t changed that much over the years. The wind in your face and the sounds made as you crack open the throttle give you the seat-of-the-pants thrill we all seek. What is it about the motorcycle that the automobile lacks? A true performance car can give you the kick-in-the-ass feeling of power and acceleration, but what about everything else? As cars have evolved, they have gotten quieter and more hightech. They almost drive themselves. Designers have taken the car and turned it into an office or living room depending whether you are sitting in the front or the back. But a motorcycle gives you the elements. Weather, road conditions and even the sense of danger. Motorcycle manufacturers have also taken some models and pushed them to the limits of technology, performance and comfort without sacrificing the wind in your face feeling. Fast or slow, in a group or by yourself, that motorcycle feeling is always there. I guess you could argue that whether you are behind the wheel of your latest vehicle or hanging on to the handlebars of your new bike that there isn t much difference from the previous one. And I would agree. Usually the new one has a little more power, the handling is a little better, and you look cooler on it. But it s the fun factor that I m struggling with. Old bike or new, the fun is about the same to me. I would almost go as far as saying that back in the day of low-power, worn out tires and soft suspension, the fun level was a little higher. You had to compensate for what the bike didn t have in those categories, and in the mean time you could see the smiles from miles away. The seat-of-the-pants meter was pegged out! The roads are all the same and the dirt hasn t changed. The trails are a little steeper to ride and the ground is a little harder. But when it comes to my pants the seat that is the fun is always the same!

Life is good when we know we take the safe route and do those maintainers. I was told the State Rally was great, and a lot of fun from those who attended. I have noticed how creative many of you have been when planning and promoting your good causes. I always said, If there is a will there is a way.
