1 JUNCTION CITY CHAPTER #1508 JUNE 2009 SPONSORING DEALER City Cycle Sales Honey Grant, Gen. Mgr. OFFICERS Director Dan Breci Assistant Director Mike Rhodes Secretary Phyllis Fitzgerald Treasurer Karen Connell Road Captain Kevin Connell Safety Chuck Olmstead Ladies of Harley Sue Gwaltney & Claudia Perry Webmaster Orin Auld Editor Wanda Allen Photographer/Historian Linda Rush H.O.G. MONTHLY From the Director Dan Breci Greetings Harley Owners Group Members Another month in the books and what a good month May was. Beautiful weather and lots of opportunities to ride and be with people who share your same interests. We only met with bad weather on one Wednesday Night Dinner Ride. Our Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday rides have really kept Road Captain Kevin Connell busy. We should have a few Asst. Road Captains who we train and they can be in charge of rides when and if Kevin gets tired and needs a day off. Motion on the floor - any seconds? For the many members who made it to the June chapter meeting we had the opportunity to hear National H.O.G. Regional Manager Leah Whaley talk about the company and the benefits of H.O.G. We heard some great questions from members that Leah promised to bring to the attention of her bosses. I was really impressed when the meeting was over and Leah was getting on her Company Car 2009 Ultra Classic that she has ridden 10,000 plus miles since last August on business. As she bundled up and checked her GPS, I asked her what hotel in Junction City she was staying at. She said she had about a three-hour ride to Independence, Missouri as she had a meeting at 9 a.m. On Sunday, June 14, 2009 sixteen members road to Salina and had a picnic with the Salina and Hays H.O.G. chapters. Salina was an excellent host and all the members made us feel at home. We had some great conversations centering around dinner rides and it seems they go to all the same places we do and one of these days we will run into each other. It seems like everyone at the other chapters know Honey and have nothing but good things to say about our chapter. Many from the Salina chapter said their favorite ride is to the Tyme Out Lounge in Grandview Plaza. One member from Salina would like to plan a ride with our chapter to Old Town in Wichita via Highway 15. He thought we would all enjoy the trip and the many sightseeing places in the Wichita area. We invited the Salina H.O.G. chapter to our hog roast next Saturday, June 20 in Milford City Park. Pat Austin will be our chef and if you would like to help him and David Eckels, be in Milford around 6 a.m. to dress and prepare the hog for dinner. This will no longer be a sleep over event. Pat said the pig will be ready to eat sometime between 4 and 6 p.m. Please bring side dishes for this event. If you need someone to pick it up because you are riding your bike, please get with me and I will arrange it. If you were not at the Kansas State H.O.G. Rally in Lawrence, you missed a good time with the members who had the opportunity to go. I won 2nd place in the Light Show Competition. They gave me a nice medal. Asst. Director Mike Rhodes boycotted the Light Show as he was railroaded last year at the state rally in Park City. This year they made it fairer by having people cast their votes for the bike they liked best. I had only so many people from our chapter who I could strong arm to vote for me. I received my rally packet from Harley-Davidson for the National H.O.G. Rally in Oklahoma City on June 26 and 27. Harley-Davidson is sponsoring this event and it is huge. There are many events going on all over Oklahoma City starting on Thursday, June 25. Carolyn and I are leaving for OKC on Friday, June 26 at 8 a.m. and hope to be there by 1 p.m. Map directions show this is only 275 miles from Junction City. There are many hotels in the area for about $80 a night. Carolyn and I will be representing our chapter in the Parade of H.O.G. Chapter Flags on Saturday morning. Monday, June 29 is 5 Million Mile Monday. Plan to ride that day and then go to Harley-Davidson and log your miles. There are so many great opportunities to ride and go to places you have never been before. Before we know it, it will be November and we will be praying for spring to go on a ride. Well, it is spring and summer is around the block, so get with your friends and take a trip someplace.

4 4 JUNE 2009 Uncle Scott s Chrome Corner Scott Templeton parts manager Check out Scott s Chrome Corner in next month s newsletter. Meanwhile, stop in to see Scott at City Cycle Sales to see what s new in the parts department. Tech Tip Dean Mizes service manager Front tire PSI goes down fast? If you notice that your front tire PSI goes down way faster than your rear, that is normal. On some of our bikes, bikes with the tall, skinny 21-inch tire and more so if it is a spoke wheel that uses an inner tube, will lose air faster than a rear wheel, especially if the rear is a mag style tubeless. The front tire volume is less than 1/2 of the rear so air PSI will change faster than the rear. Some may notice as much as 15 PSI lost each month. Just make it a monthly routine to check your tire PSI and you ll be fine. Photo Gallery Linda Rush Photographer/Historian Leah Whaley, Regional Manager of Harley Owners Group including Kansas, was a guest at our June chapter meeting. She then put on all her gear, and headed back to Missouri on her Harley. She hoped to get there by midnight. 5 JUNE Oh, by the way... Wanda Allen editor I d like to compile a list of diners, cafes, restaurants that we could all use as a resource for ride destinations. Let s exclude chains or franchises. We want to find the places you have visited and can recommend to others. I will assume all destinations have paved roads. If not please say so in your submissions. Some folks may not want to ride on unpaved roads no matter how good the food. If you don t know the exact address, hours, etc. just give me anything you know and I ll try to research the rest. Your personal comments will help with answering any questions. If several people suggest the same place I will edit appropriately to fit. , call or talk to me at future meetings about your ideas. Eventually we ll get the info online so everyone can benefit from it. I ll list a new location in the newsletter each month as long as I continue to get suggestions. Danny s Grill & Catering, 420 Lincoln Ave., Clay Center, KS Open: Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sat. 5-9 p.m. Miles from City Cycle Sales: 39.2 miles The chicken fried steak although not huge was a good-sized portion and good. Others in the group had burgers and had no complaints. Mike Rhodes Let s Ask Bubba Bubba resident expert Dear Bubba, What is all this noise I hear about the Million Mile Monday? Does that mean I have to ride a million miles to participate in this event? Can you give me the 411 on this? Signed, Not sure I can ride that far. Dear Not sure, No, you do not have to ride a million miles that day. Just ride that day and turn your miles in so that we can get a cumulative mileage for all riders. Here is some more info. What if H.O.G. members around the world committed themselves to all riding together on one particular day? How far could they go? We ll find out on Million Mile Monday Monday, June 29, 2009 as H.O.G. members band together and attempt to ride a cumulative million miles in one day. And we want you to be a part of it! Ride alone. Ride with friends. Ride to work. Ride around the neighborhood. The point is, just ride (and have fun)! When you re done, log on to members.hog.com to register your miles. Watch the virtual odometer as it spins toward 5,000,000 and beyond! (Deadline: NOON CT, Tuesday, June 30.) That s all there is to it. Details about registering your miles will be available on members.hog.com when you sign in. It s just for fun, just for H.O.G. members, and just a great excuse to make Monday more exciting by sharing the road with fellow members around the world! Hope this gives you the 411 you wanted. In the meantime, ride on! Signed, Bubba
