3 . The Next Ride We're Back...! Most of you know us and have for many years. Susan joined Chapter AZ-R in 1994 with her late husband, Tom Pritchard. They were regular members, attending most events, but were not on staff. For Bill, he joined GWRRA in 1983 and was an active participant in Maine, Ohio, Alberta (Canada), Texas and came to Arizona in At AZ-R he became a staff member in his third month and has been in every role since then, including Chapter Director for We also served at AZ District as Membership, Assistant Directors, and District Directors. Yes, we have experience, but our real love is with this chapter. It has always been the case, in my mind, that GWRRA is an organization made up of thousands of chapters. The organization runs and fails at the local level. So, we have put our efforts into making Chapter AZ-R one of the best there is. We have watched with pride and relief as the chapter came under the tutelage of new Chapter Directors that made a positive impact. Keith Ranta, Marty Smith, Steve Penrose, Terry Rosner (briefly), and Jim Oliver, have all done great work to keep this chapter in the lead in Arizona. We are very proud of the results. For the past four years, we watched Jim Oliver bring a spirit to AZ-R that really made it shine. So, what can you expect from us? Mostly, it will be more of the same. Chapter AZ-R is famous for providing a menu of opportunities: dinners, rides, social events, education, friendship, team spirit and pride. We want to see this continue as long as possible. The people who make up this chapter are the reason it is so good. We come from various careers, geographic locations, political or religious viewpoints, and reasons for being part of GWRRA. What we have in common is an interest in something we do and the people we do it with. Let's keep that spirit alive and bring more like-minded folks into the fold. You may notice that people come and go in a volunteer association like GWRRA. That is normal and cannot be changed; Susan and I notice that there are less than a dozen AZ-R members from the time we stepped down in But there are so many new and fantastic people who have joined; and even more waiting in the wings to be part of our fun and excellent team. So, our goal for Chapter AZ-R is to keep things interesting, fun and educational, to make it a place people want to belong to. We are always open to new ideas and if you can see something that will make others come on board, we are happy to discuss it. We also want your help, so if you can give us a few hours each month to help on a project, we'd like to talk to you about it. Chapter AZ-R is the best because it works hard at it. You will see many of the same staff in the new year, plus some excellent new people stepping up into roles they haven't been in. This makes our chapter great we are sharing the leadership with people who can make a positive impact. We look forward to serving all of you in the time ahead. 4 By Charles and Kimi Ivey AZ-R ACD s Hello and Happy New Year fellow roadies! This is your chapter mascot Roadie Roadrunner with the first of what I hope will be many items in the coming year. I am very excited at the possibilities for what is ahead. We have a new Chapter Director, new staff and lots of new ideas to be shared and see come to fruition. But of course, really, the chapter is all about YOU. Is there something you would love to see the chapter do, or somewhere we have not gone? If you just bring the idea or suggestion up, it will certainly be considered and if possible acted on. There is also the need for people to step up and help with committees. ACD s Charles and Kimi Ivey are the head of the event committee and need new ideas and help planning events for your chapter. They will be asking for volunteers at the January meeting. I can t wait to hear about something new to do or a new place to go! After all, I am a ROAD runner! When you read this our first ride for the year, to Horney Toad Restaurant in Cave Creek will have taken place. I plan on being there rain or shine and enjoying the time with all my friends. Of course, there will be food, as well as lots of laughs, I am sure! (I wonder if Wyle E. will be there too? Hope not.) More to come, with pictures, later. I am really looking forward to being able to go to as many of the events that will take place this year as possible. My keepers, Charles and Kimi have promised to take me along on as many rides and events as they can. So, get ready Chapter R, you will be hearing BEEP BEEP a whole lot more. 6 HOWDY! Greetings! Susan and I are your new Assistant Chapter Directors. What? Another Susan and Bill? Yes. And another ACD? Yes. AZ R is a big chapter and it takes a lot of volunteers to keep our events, gatherings and rides running smoothly. There won t always be two articles by the ACDs but we will strive to keep you informed of all the Chapter goingons as we say in the south. We will always include our last names for articles and s, etc so you know who is speaking. For those of you who have not yet met us, we have been members of GWRRA for 15 years. During that time, Bill has been active in training and leadership and Susan has worked with Membership Enhancement; most of you know her as our current newsletter editor. We very much appreciate the focus of GWRRA embodied in the motto; Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. It sets GWRRA apart from other motorcycle organizations. The people that participate in the training and events become better friends. We look out for each other. The training provides the knowledge to understand and apply how to enjoy riding our motorcycle even more. You have seen that bear out in many articles in the past. The more you know, the more fun you have riding. The more skill you have, the safer you are while riding. The levels program establishes and helps us set goals for keeping the skills we develop current and on point. If you have attended our chapter gathering you have heard that the skills we have riding our motorcycles are perishable. So, constant practice is the key to continued riding enjoyment. I urge all of you to participate in the levels program and be aggressive in participating the training that Chapter R make available to you. I think you will like the results. Last year I was certified by GWRRA as a Rider Course Instructor and a Medic First Aide Instructor. I would like to help all of you on the journey to enjoy riding your motorcycle. I will be working with Dave Fowler this year to identify those of you that need training and providing opportunities for you to advance in the levels program. Watch R Chapter calendar for First Aid Medic training. It s a great course for your personal use as well as a requirement for moving up in the Levels Program. We also hope all of you enjoyed our Chapter Newsletters in Susan would like to continue to improve the value and enjoyment of the Newsletter for all of you. We would like your help. She would like to include articles and pictures from co-riders. We think that co-riders have a valuable perspective to share. What do you think of the training and the impact on how safe you feel? Do you like how comfortable you are on rides? What do you think about the fun we have on our rides and at the destinations? Please send your articles to Susan. Even a couple of paragraphs about your favorite rides is enough. Take lots of pictures as well. Susan and I look forward to serving all of you in We hope to get to know all of you better this year. We hope you can all take advantage of the new training this year. Bill & Susan Rodgers R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 6 January 2017

7 JANUARY JANUARY No, the title of this article is not a typographical error. I didn t stutter. But I did repeat myself for a reason, which I ll get to in a following paragraph. As I m writing this for the January issue of our Chapter s newsletter, I couldn t help thinking about the first month, and what it s named for, and how it relates to Motorist Awareness. January is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. The first day of the month, known as New Year's Day, looks both forward to new events and challenges and backward to consider how we all did in the previous 12 months. Indeed, it s altogether appropriate to consider January as a month to look twice. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, and thereby of gates, doors, doorways, passages and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. (See the image of the two faces of Janus accompanying this article.) Although some folks think the month of January was named for Juno, another Roman god, I favor the opinion that naming it after Janus makes better sense. The god Janus was also said to preside over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping. So what does any of this palaver have to do with Motorist Awareness? It s really a good reminder that (especially during January when dirty, icy smears coat almost every vehicle s side windows and rearview mirrors) motorists should consider the example of Janus and look twice to save a life. At an intersection, look left, then right, then left and right again. Think of the article title January, January as you do so. It will be a little reminder of how to be sure there s not trouble/conflict/war coming quickly toward you when you least expect it. Well-trained motorists realize that looking twice is a wise practice. And practice it you should! Sometimes, the most unexpected things can appear suddenly outside your vehicle even in January. Deer, elk, dogs, sheep, moose, snowmobiles, motorcycles, sidewise skidding garbage trucks they all can come careening toward you when you least expect it. So, this month, take a tip from your buddy Janus. Do twice as much looking for trouble and your year ahead will be more peaceful, more healthy, and more fun. Think January, January. Thank You to Nick Hoppner for this thought provoking article. Each time we begin a new year, we look ahead and wonder. What will change this year? How will I deal with those changes? What can I do to make my city, my state, my country a better place? For we know that change is a certainty. How we respond to those changes is our choice. Changes are coming to GWRRA, too. In early 2017, we expect an announcement about significant changes to the M.A.D. Motorist Awareness Division. Many of the changes are a result of suggestions from GWRRA members last spring. I hope that your response to those changes will be positive. Like our GWRRA Rider Ed Program, the new Motorist Awareness Program is a key component of GWRRA s tax exempt status. As such, we need to do two main things: 1. Conduct activities at the chapter and District level that support our Share the Road vision, and 2. REPORT those accomplishments. What can you do? Each chapter needs a Motorist Awareness Program (MAP) Coordinator to work with the Chapter Director to plan and schedule MAP activities. Then, we need volunteers to help carry out those activities. Equally important we need YOUR IDEAS on how to educate the motoring public. Char and I are excited to be a part of the changes that Motorist Awareness Program Directors Mike and Barri Critzman will soon be announcing. Please join the Motorist Awareness Team and embrace those changes in your Chapter and District. Working together we can educate the motoring public to Share the Road and make our highways safer for all. May we all have a safe and happy 2017! Cliff and Char Simpson, Region F MAP Coordinators R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 7 January 2017

8 EDUCATION PAST and FUTURE Chapter Educators Dave & Cheryl Fowler Are you in the levels program? GWRRA levels program is real simple. For Level I the only requirements is that you will agree to ride safe. I think everyone in the Chapter wants to ride safe. For Level II you need to ride safe and take a rider course, Arizona Motorcycle Drill Team puts on rider Enhancement course 3 to 4 times a year that qualifies you for Level II and best of all it s FREE. Level III requires you to become knowledgeable in CPR or First Aid through training offered by GWRRA and other accredited agencies, as well as having a First Aid Kit on your motorcycle. Level IV requirements are that you be current in both CPR/First Aid and commit to wearing ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME. All the levels are at no charge to you unless you want patches. You only need to advance as far as you want. It is not necessary to advance all the way through to Level IV. That is pretty simple, right? So why are you not in the Levels Program? As I look at the Chapter report I see a lot of riders and co-riders that have attended seminars but are not in the levels program. So my commitment as Chapter Educator is to get everyone in the chapter into at the least Level I. If you are not in the levels program I will find you was a weak year for members joining the Levels program. We had 6 members enter level I, no one to level II and only 1 person to level III. So let us make 2017 better and get everyone into the Levels Program. Practice Field Day, aka, PFD. We as riders need to understand that riding a motorcycle is a perishable skill. If we don t practice we lose some of our riding ability. The Chapter holds a PFD once a month at Turf Paradise, located at 19th ave and Bell Rd. There are 17 different excises that are set up for you to practice at your leisure, no pressure, find an excise you like and ride it to you become proficient and move on to another excise. Now here is the problem that I see at PFD every month. There are not that many members there. It s the same handful of chapter people all the time and most of the bikes are not Goldwing s. So why are you not riding to a PFD to practice your riding skills? I know everyone needs to practice so let us try and get to a PFD in 2017 and get the Chapter numbers up. We held 11 PFD s in We had a total of 444 bikes over the course of the year, made up of 110 people. As I mentioned above about 80% of the bikes there were something other than Goldwing s. So let us get more Goldwing s out to a PFD in Seminars for 2016 were very well attended. We held 6 different seminars after the Chapter gatherings during the summer months. We had 183 members in attendance; this does not count the members that attended seminars at District, Region and Wing Ding. Very good attendance for the seminars; so let us do the same for R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 8 January 2017

9 RIDER EDUCATION PROGRAM LEVELS The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level are increased rider knowledge, increased safety skills, and the prevention of accidents. 12 MYTH BUSTERS! For non-riders, motorcycles and motorcycle riding is something that tends to be very misunderstood, and there are a lot of misconceptions about them out there. But sometimes, the biggest misconceptions about riding come from riders themselves! Check out some of the dumbest myths riders perpetuate, and get the straight facts here. 1) Wearing gear is pointless because riding is so dangerous, you're going to die if you crash anyway, so you may as well be comfortable while you're riding. Among a lot of the non-riding public, motorcycles have a reputation for being some kind of lethal twowheeled time bombs just waiting to blast the rider s guts and brains into spaghetti and explode into a fireball at the slightest provocation. Most of us riders know that's a bit far-fetched, but that's the perception a lot of people have of motorcycles - and that fear keeps them far away from them as a result. But there are a handful of people who believe that motorcycles really are that dangerous - and choose to ride them anyway. They boast about the extreme danger of motorcycles and the fact that they ride in spite of it, playing up how "badass" and fearless they are, and they often do it in t-shirts and shorts because "if they go down, they're dead anyway." It's absurd enough to be slap-worthy, but you actually hear it quite a bit. Problem is, statistics show that riders are actually more unlikely to die in a motorcycle accident; NHTSA statistics show that even unhelmeted riders only have a 39% chance of dying in a motorcycle accident, meaning there's a 61% chance they'll live through the ordeal, suffering through road rash, broken bones, reconstructive surgery, and if they're really lucky, permanent brain damage. I guess if riding without gear isn't "comfortable" enough for them, maybe 45 days in a hospital bed on morphine while their skin grafts heal will be. Fact: motorcycles are dangerous, but they are much more likely to injure you than kill you; wearing gear, especially helmets, will dramatically reduce both the extent and severity of that injury. 2) Helmets cause more accidents than they prevent because they block your vision and hearing. We promote "ATGATT" (all the gear, all the time) not only because we sell motorcycle gear, but because we know it works. But we know a lot of riders don't wear it all the time, perhaps opting to wear armored jeans reinforced jeans instead of armored pants for commuting, or ditching the jacket on a short ride on a sunny day. It's a measured risk, and a personal choice that every rider needs to make before every ride. When it comes to helmets, it is flat out stupid to ride without one - at any time. Extensive research by the NHTSA shows that helmets improve the chance of survival in a motorcycle crashing by a whopping 37%; it also dramatically reduces the probability and severity of head injuries, the cost of medical treatment, the length of hospital stays, the need for special medical treatments (like ventilation and intubation) and long-term disability. Unhelmeted riders are 3 times more likely to sustain traumatic brain injury in an accident than helmeted riders; even bicycle riders have higher rates of brain trauma when a helmet is not used, and they operate a much lower speeds than we do! Pretty much every study ever done supports that wearing a motorcycle helmet dramatically reduces the risk of injury in a crash; however, there are some who say that the risk of crashing itself is higher when wearing a helmet, because helmets cut down on their ability to see and hear threats to begin with. The claim seems like it could have merit - except it's totally untrue. Another study by the NHTSA compared the effects on vision and hearing between helmeted and non-helmeted riders and found, on the whole, no measurable reduction in hearing ability. Then, in cases where peripheral vision was hampered by the helmet, riders compensated by simply turning their heads more. Yup, turning your head a couple more degrees is apparently all it takes to debunk this argument - sounds like a small price to pay for a huge increase in safety, doesn't it? Fact: There is no evidence that use of a helmet increases the likelihood of getting into an accident, but there is mountains of evidence showing that using one will help you survive one. 13 Hello Chapter R Roadies, Well here it is the end of 2016 and I m sure a lot of us are asking ourselves where in the world this past year went. Well it s gone and we can t get it back so the best thing to do is look forward to the BRIGHT new year ahead of us. Speaking of a BRIGHT new year, I have been asked to be the Chapter R Assistant Educator and have accepted the position. In this coming year I will do my best to uphold this position and to assist wherever and whenever I can to promote Rider Education within the chapter well as within GWRRA. I m looking forward to working on my Level s program and would like to challenge all of you to do the same. For those of you already in a levels program ask yourself if it s time to move up. If you are not in a levels program allow me to help you get started. One of the big things I would like to assist with this year is challenging Chapter R riders to become more involved in Practice Field Day (PFD). This program is a great way to keep our skills up and was designed with Gold Wing riders in mind, however on the practice days I ve attended I have been surprised at the small number of wings riders, but the larger number of sport bikes and Harley riders all sharpening their skills and becoming more comfortable with their bikes. So let s all start a BRIGHT new year and get involved with the levels program, with the PFD and most of all the Riders Education in general. If I can be of assistance to any of you please contact me at wrs1434@cox.net and if I don t know the answer to your questions I will find the answer so we both can learn. I m looking forward to a BRIGHT new year and I m wishing you a BRIGHT, Happy and Healthy New Year. Bill Stahl; Assistant Chapter Educator R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 13 January 2017

16 For the Love of Horse Power Bev & Roger Cameron, R COY For the better part of my life I have been in love with horses. The first horse that I was able to buy for myself was a strawberry roan mare named Peppermint. The seller told me to never ride her bareback because she would buck and throw anyone who tried. Of course he had to say that in front of my mother. Even with this warning I was convinced she was the horse for me and we brought her home. One afternoon both of my parents were away and I got my chance. I went down to the pasture and called her. After a few minutes of catch me if you can, she let me catch her. I slipped her halter on and led her to the tie rail. I brushed her and put her bridle on. I led her out into the pasture in case she did buck I didn t want to kiss the tie rail. I was a little tentative, but I decided I was going to find out if she would let me ride her without a saddle. We were still inside the pasture so I knew if she did manage to throw me at least I would not have to chase her all over Lancaster County. So I got my courage up and before she knew it, I was sitting pretty on her back. Honestly I was a bit disappointed when she didn t move. I could feel her tense, but no reaction. So I shifted my weight from side to side and back and forth and she began to relax. I picked up the reins and touched her sides and she moved on out. A small little crow hop was all the buck I got and that was no big deal. I rode her inside the pasture for about 15 minutes or so and who should pull into the driveway but my mom & dad. They were not too happy with me, but after I told them that nothing much happened they were okay. I m very spontaneous so with or without a saddle we explored every backwoods trail I could find and we had a great time. I never worried about getting lost because I knew she could always find her way home to the feed barrel. She seemed to sense my mood and gave me what I needed to brighten my day. A fast gallop across the meadow was always on the menu. She looked forward to stretching her legs as much as I did. She was special on so many levels. There were many horses that were special over the years but not near as much as your first one. Fast-forward to the present; over the course of time this love of horses has transferred to love of two wheeled horsepower. It was gradual but when I made up my mind in 2006 to begin riding I ve never looked back. As my confidence grew so did my love of this machine. I can be depressed one moment and Roger says let s go for a ride and my whole day brightens. All the concerns of life are blowing off me in the wind. The exhilaration of the ride and the wind in my face is beyond words. Just as on one of my horses I still explore back roads and when they unexpectedly turn to dirt we turn around (sometimes). At times I am so involved in the ride I miss my turn, but I m never lost thanks to my GPS. Feeding and daily maintenance are not required on my wing. When I m ready, so is she whether it has been a day, a week or a month. Another similarity is the way home on both horse and wing are always faster than going, but I ve never had to slow down the last mile or two before the garage so it wasn t too hot to put up for the night. Yes I do love my WING! BEV R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 16 January 2017

18 Root Beer Braised Short Ribs Serves 6 Ingredients: 5 pounds bone-in short ribs ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoons olive oil, more if needed 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 2 medium carrots, chopped 5 ribs of celery, chopped 2 garlic cloves, smashed 2 cups red wine (I used Zinfandel) 1 ½ cups root beer (12 ounces) 3 cups beef broth 3 sprigs of thyme Salt and pepper Parsley for garnish Procedure: 1. Pre-heat oven to 325 F. 2. Dry the short ribs with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper. Coat in flour, shaking off excess. 3. Heat oil in a large Dutch oven over high heat. Brown the short ribs on all sides. 4. Remove short ribs to a platter and remove most of the oil. Leave only about 1 tablespoon in the Dutch oven. 5. Add the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Sautee for about 3 minutes. Add wine, root beer, broth, and thyme. Bring to a boil. Add short ribs and cover. 6. Transfer pot to the oven. Braise short ribs for about 4 hours, or until meat is very tender. 7. Remove pot from the oven. Remove the short ribs and place on a platter. Strain the liquid into a bowl. Reserve the liquid and discard the solids. Add the short ribs back into the pot. Skim the liquid of most of the fat. 8. At this point you can let this cool, transfer to a container, and refrigerate. It is good to make this in advance. As the liquid cools in the refrigerator, all the fat will harden at the top and you will be able to easily remove it with a slotted spoon. 9. When you are ready to serve, heat the liquid in a pot, bring it to a simmer, and let it reduce by about ¼. Add the short ribs back in. We had our first taste of these in Carefree, AZ. They were absolutely delicious. Hope this recipe measures up! Remember we have a SUPER BOWL PARTY coming next month! R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 18 January 2017
