2 FROM THE CHAPTER DIRECTOR S CHAIR Jim Oliver, Chapter Director Volunteering I ve been trying to figure what to write for this month s article and I believe I ll talk about what it means to be a volunteer. Volunteer (n) a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. (v) Freely offer to do something. If you are wondering where this might be going, hang on... it gets better. When you joined GWRRA I would hope you understood we were an organization of volunteers. That simply means that most all your officers, from your Chapter Director to our National Director are all volunteers. None of us gets paid for our services, which is the basis of being a volunteer. Ever drive through Sun City? Notice on the Welcome to Sun City sign it also says Community of Volunteers, or something to that effect. Ever consider why Tennessee is called the Volunteer State? So, going back to GWRRA, we often ask our members to help with certain tasks. This is essential for us to function and provide all those fun events, rides, seminars and other benefits YOU the member enjoys. We all sit at a gathering or a seminar at a District or Region Rally and may wonder, how does all this happen? Go to Wing Ding and it s even larger. Someone has to do something to make all this happen. We have over 8000 members in GWRRA and only a small percentage of them volunteer. The rest just seem to sit back and reap all the benefits. Well folks, I feel it s time to start stepping up. I know all of you have talents based on your past employment. Even without that, we all have hobbies, many of which will be beneficial to your Chapter or District. We have folks well versed in graphic arts or computer science, so why not help as your group s Web Master? How about retail sales or marketing, so why not help with your group s Stores? Three years ago I was asked to take over as CD for our chapter. I was hesitant, but decided to give it a try. Yes, it has been lots of fun, meeting new people with similar interests and yes, it has been some work. But, when you are having fun, the work really seems incidental. Now, all I m asking is, as a volunteer, you need not take on a task that lasts three years, or a few months. I m asking each of you to take some time and think, what can I do for my Chapter? Like John Kennedy once asked Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what YOU can do for your country. Very well said and still applicable today. YOUR Chapter does a lot for you... so when will you do something, even for an hour or day, for your Chapter? All year long we have Chapter Fund Raisers, District Rally s, Region Rally s and finally Wing Ding. When you go to one of these events, do you ever wonder what YOU might be able to do to help them? No, they are NOT your Chapter, but they ARE GWRRA!! Right? So, while there, reaping all those benefits being offered to you, why not ask, what could I do to help? Want to make a difference? Want to make an impact? Ask!! It s just that simple. Maybe you could help sell 50/25/25 tickets, or help with the registration desk, or any number of things that all these groups need. Just because you are a visitor, doesn t mean they won t want YOUR help, if you ask. So, as has often been said, you get what you put into it. I started out helping with Chapter of the Year, then as Chapter MAP coordinator. I also helped out at our Chapter Gatherings with ticket sales, tip hat, etc. These seem so little, but believe me, they mean a lot, especially to your Chapter. And finally, the biggest reward is the feeling you get from just being a part of that event and knowing you helped. That s about it for this month. I hope many of you will be able to help during the coming year. Every Chapter needs your input and help, so let s stop being the Chapter wallflower and start getting involved. 4 2015 GWRRA Arizona Chapter R Individual of the Year Frank Knight On Wednesday morning September 30, Jim Oliver, Reggie Miller and yours truly set out for the New Mexico State Rally. We had decided earlier to take two day to get to Taos for the Rally and take some of the more scenic route. We began our trip by going through Payson on Highway 87 and stopping there for breakfast. After breakfast we took Highway 260 through Heber to Show Low and onto Highway 60 through Springerville to Quemado,NM, where we took Highway 37 north to Highway 117. This was a very relaxing and scenic route. New Mexico Highway 117 takes you through El Malpais National Monument where on the left side of the highway are miles and miles of lava flow and on the right side of the highway are beautiful cliffs and mesa's of many different colors. The highway winds you through this beautiful terrain. This highway will bring to back to I-40 just east of Grants,NM. From here we headed for our motel in North Albuquerque and then dinner at the Texas Roadhouse. The following morning we went up I-25 for about 39 miles before we took the 599 turnoff which lets you bypass Sante Fe and all the traffic and lights. We headed toward Espanola and then onto Bandelier National Monument. Things have changed here in the past three years because of the floods that have took out a lot of the parking space at the Monument, so they have built a Ranger Station in White Rock where you park and take a 20 minute shuttle to the Monument. It is a shame that you cannot park at the Monument as the road there is an excellent and scenic motorcycle road with lots of twisties. Bandelier Ranger Station, facilities and road to the Monument were built in the 1930's by the Conversation Corps. The park is pretty big and can entail a lot of hiking, but is one the few cliff dwellings that they actually let you climb up into some the cliff ruins. It was very impressing. This is a side trip that is well worth the effort. After our adventure here and a late lunch in Espanola we headed for our motel in Taos. On Friday morning we checked into the Rally at the host hotel of Sage Brush Inn, we collected our packets, bought 50/50 tickets and viewed the vendors. Latter Jim, Reggie and I took about a 16 mile trip to the Rio Grande River Gorge Bridge. Very impressive bridge that crosses the gorge with a rest stop on the west end of bridge. The bridge is over 600 feet about the Rio Grande River and Gorge. You can walk across the bridge with many stops for outstanding photos of the river and gorge below. The colors in the gorge were magnificent. On Saturday morning Reggie and I took a trip through the Enchanted Circle around the mountains that surround Taos. Head East out of Taos on Highway 64 through wooded land that could be describe as the Enchanted Forest, very nice twisty roads with lots to see. Once out of the forest, you come to a big open valley head head towards Eagles Nest and just before Eagles Nest there is turn off to Angel Fire Ski Resort. After going through Eagles Nest you start a climb up to a pass that is 9860 feet and then you start to descend down to Red River through some of the most beautiful scenery to be found, pine trees, blue spruces and many aspen tress changing into their fall colors of yellow and orange. Red River reminds one of a Swiss Ski Village. From there you go through Questa and then back to Taos. The whole circle trip takes about two and a half hours. It will be one of the best side trips you can take while visiting the Taos area. We made some new friends at the Rally and got to see some of our old friends from New Mexico and Colorado. Jim participated in the Bike Show and Bike Challenge and won a trophy for each venue. On Sunday morning we gathered and packed our bikes and went to the Sage Brush Inn for breakfast to visit and chat with new friends, current friends and old friends before our journey back home. We decided to do the one day trip back home on Sunday which was over 600 miles. We went Interstate all the way to Winslow where we took Highway 87 back through Payson and home. We had some rain and wind around Sante Fe and after that we had clear weather until about halfway down Highway 87 and we encountered some drizzle and rain and one slow pick-up truck for about 40 miles. We all made it back home safe and sound around 7:00pm Sunday evening. Great trip with great people and venue. New Mexico has many outstanding side roads and sites to see, so do not miss the New Mexico State Rally next year. ARIZONA ROADWAYS 4 NOVEMBER 2015

6 The Next Ride Bill & Susan Trask, Touring Arizona, District Trainers Return of the Riding Season Many you are like me, from a cooler climate where winter is when you sit and remember your favorite rides and plan rides for the next season. Many days I stared on the snow covered landscape and dreamt of riding my Gold Wing. For the last 15 years I have lived in Arizona and the winter blues are replaced with the ability to ride almost any day. Arizona has a different season called hotter than h---, where riding is done in early morning or after dark and the destination is always at 5000 or more. When the cooler temperatures finally appear we can ride again all day and to many more places. What an amazing State we live in. If you have not looked into Touring Arizona and its many sites, this is your chance to really see what s out there and enjoy some wonderful rides. As I mentioned in last month s article even if you ridden to a place before, going back is not boring; it s a new adventure and you may find new and interesting things along the way. And if ride with a group, your experience will always be fun with friends. Look at the Facebook pages of Touring Arizona and Chapter AZR and you will see happy faces and people enjoying each other s company. This is what GWRRA brings to the table every time fun with friends. Amazingly, GWRRA also brings you safety and knowledge while you are having fun with friends. This could be as simple as group riding; each time you ride with a group you learn a little more and discover the importance of team riding and group control. If you attend a Practice Field Day you will discover talents you never knew you had and a chance to challenge yourself at riding skills you have never tried. Or just hone the skills you have and ride away feeling good about your talents. Attending a GWRRA seminar is like a free class on how to do almost anything. The dozens of seminars available offer insight and knowledge into a variety of topics. In my professional career my company paid thousands of dollars for things we get for free as GWRRA members. On another note, we like to attend the District Rallies in our neighboring States. This year we went to California, Colorado, and New Mexico rallies as well as our own Arizona rally. Not only do these make nice trips, you get to meet some great people and share time and friendship with people who are much like yourself. Take the time to plan at least one other District Rally in And don t forget, Wing Ding, the big international rally, is back in Billings, MT in That is a MUST go event. A Revised Touring Arizona Program Touring Arizona has been a huge success and members have commented how much they enjoy it. We are looking to expand and enhance the Touring Arizona program for Many folks have offered suggestions for additional stops; others have asked that the rules be made a little tighter; still others want more difficulty to attain the rewards. So, we have been listening and we will introduce the Revised Touring Arizona program at this year s AZ District Rally. Here are some of the changes that will occur: Regions remain the same, with one new addition (Route 66). We have moved stops around and renumbered them. People already signed up will get credit for their stops; after Oct 31, 2015 they will come under the new rules. This means you may find more or less stops in regions than you have now, depending on where that stop is located. Each region will have 25 total photo stops; members would need to have 15 stops per region to earn a hangar bar. New hangar bars will be designed to differentiate them from the existing ones: you will know who got 15 stops instead of 10 stops. Of course, people with the 10 stop bars can upgrade them by getting 15 stops in a new region. Photo rules will be changed from you and/or your bike/trike to your bike/trike or photos of you showing you in bike gear. We will discourage the use of automobiles to get photos, except in special circumstances. The program is designed to give you places to see and goals to achieve. Have fun and enjoy Touring Arizona. 8 RIDER EDUCATION Chapter Educators Dave & Cheryl Fowler Riding in a Group Whether you ride as an individual or in a group, in order to survive on the open road your riding habits and techniques must be constantly thought of as defensive. When you ride in a group, your actions not only affect you, but the other riders as well. Therefore, it is important to recognize and remember that riding in a group is a team effort. To be safe, you must rely on the cooperation and coordination of all riders in the group. Before the group departs for the ride, determine who will lead and tail gun, as well as the skill level and experience of all the riders. The lead bike will ride to the level of least skilled rider. Determine what CB channel you will use, what route you will take, and predetermined stops and if anyone has any medical issues or other special needs that would require extra stops. Go over hand signals for those who do not have a CB. Each rider in the group is responsible for yourself and your co rider. Each rider is responsible for the safe operation of your bike so you do not endanger anyone or other vehicles on the road. Leader and tail gunner should both be experienced riders and work together to keep the group in formation, coordinated and safe. The main function of the tail gunner is to insure the group keeps a safe following distance from one to the other and keeps the group together. Tail gunner will keep the group tight in traffic as to prevent other vehicles from cutting into the formation. Tail gunner also assists the lead bike in lane changes by securing the lane first then informing the lead bike it is safe for the group to move. Lead bike moves the group into the secured lane together. When we ride as a group sometimes the tail gunner will look ahead of the leader and can see that a lane change is coming and secures the lane before the leader will request a lane change. Tail gunner will also assist anyone who has stopped or has to fall behind for any reason and also keeps an eye on the traffic behind the group, especially when the group is making any stops or turns. Lead bike looks for hazards in the roadway, slow vehicles, vehicles off the side of the road and other obstacles that may impede the progress of the group. Lead bike will also inform the group of stops up ahead, any turns along the way and any speed limit adjustments. Lead bike is responsible for getting the group to its destination. When on a narrow or twisting road the leader will inform the group to single up and ride your own ride. Do not let your ego go beyond your riding capability by trying to stay with a more experienced rider; the group will not abandon you. Ride your own ride and do not go any faster than you feel comfortable going. The second bike in the group is an important position also. Because the lead bike is sometimes focused on where the group is going and may not see a hazard or other vehicles approaching. Therefore the second bike becomes another pair of eyes. In normal group riding the formation will be staggered. Follow the 2 second rule (keep at least 2 seconds in front and behind). When coming to an intersection the leader may call for the group to double up in order to get everyone through the turn. If there is two turn lanes the group may use both lanes to get through as well. The roadway is divided up into 3 tracks (left, center and right); when making turns at the intersection remember to stay in your own track, avoid straying into the other track. Remember to arrive early for the ride with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. Be certain your bike is in safe and reliable operating condition. Be prepared for weather and emergencies, carry that first aid kit. Ride safe and have fun. ARIZONA ROADWAYS 8 NOVEMBER 2015

11 MOTORIST AWARENESS CLIFF & CHAR SIMPSON Arizona DPS to crack down on distracted drivers This story posted on on Nov. 11, 2013 by Bill Monie, Fox 10 News PHOENIX - More and more states are cracking down on distracted drivers by passing laws to keep people from texting or using their phones - behind the wheel. But here in Arizona, there is no such law. Despite that, the Department of Public Safety will soon be cracking down on distracted drivers, including those who are texting and driving. Starting in January (2014), DPS officers will reportedly be encouraged to pull over distracted drivers and cite them, even though there is no texting ban or distracted driving law in Arizona. The crack-down comes in the wake of a DPS officer, killed after being hit by a trucker who was allegedly using his cell phone at the time. But DPS says this campaign they're thinking about doing is aimed at distracted drivers and has been in the works for some time. DPS wants your eyes on the road and not on the phone. The state doesn't have bans on texting and driving or distracted drivers, but DPS plans to go after distracted drivers anyway, citing people under a different law called "speed not reasonable and prudent." "They're going to go under the theory that if you're distracted, any speed's not reasonable and it may fly in some justice court jurisdictions, depending on the politics of the particular person reviewing the case, but it seems like a stretch," said Mark Andersen, a criminal defense attorney. Andersen says unlike the reckless driving law, speed not reasonable and prudent is a civil violation, similar to a speeding ticket. "They might just choose to pay the fine or take the defensive driving school, but if they charge them with reckless driving, it's a criminal offense -- much more serious, but it seems also a lot more difficult for the state to prove." Drivers have mixed opinions. "I get it where someone would be upset about more laws and regulating what we can do as people, but at the same time, there's that safety aspect, I mean, what really is right?" asked John Hickman. "Well, I think there are a bunch of crashes on the highway that could be preventable and a lot of it's due to distraction and texting," said Jacob Crutchfield. "I think it's a good thing." But Andersen says officers won't likely take your phone as evidence. "But they will use your statements if you say I was looking at my phone, texting or ing. They're going to use those statements against you for sure." Andersen says if cited, you're probably looking at a fine of between $100 and $300 and 3 points on your license. Of course, DPS can charge you with reckless driving and even manslaughter if your actions cause a death. 12 AZ-R COY Page By Cliff and Char Simpson. When we were attending Wing Ding, and again while attending the New Mexico District Rally in Taos, we were asked several times, What are your medallions for? So it became apparent that there are some folks who are not familiar with the GWRRA Couple of the Year Program. Here is an excerpt from the Couple of the Year Manual that may enlighten you: HISTORY AND PURPOSE GWRRA s Couple of the Year Program was instituted in 1988 as a successor to our nine-year tradition of selecting a Wing Ding Queen to serve as ambassador for our association. A program which began as a way to honor couples at the local level, and to select enthusiastic duos to serve as ambassadors and spokespersons for GWRRA, has evolved into a useful tool for identifying and helping prepare couples for leadership positions within the organization. The Couple of the Year Program has two purposes: First and Foremost, the program provides an opportunity for local Chapters to recognize and honor a couple each year for their dedication, accomplishments and participation within the Chapter. Secondly, it establishes a process for identifying outstanding couples who can serve their Districts, Regions, and ultimately the International GWRRA organization as ambassadors and spokespersons. AN HONOR OR A RESPONSIBILITY? Being selected a Chapter Couple of the Year is an honor bestowed on a deserving couple who has shown dedication and commitment to their Chapter. Being honored as Chapter Couple of the Year is an award that your Chapter has given you. There is a lot of confusion that exists concerning responsibilities of a Couple of the Year. The only responsibility is that you continue doing the things that led you to being selected as the Couple of the Year. That would be things such as participating in Chapter events, rides and visiting other Chapters. All of which are part of the Fun of being in GWRRA. Many couples find that after being their Chapter Couple of the Year they want to participate in the District Couple f the Year selection and look forward to the recognition and experience that the next level will bring. Being selected as District, Region or International Couple of the Year allows the Couple to represent the association as Ambassadors and spokespersons. We hope this short overview has been helpful. 13 ACD Corner By Charles and Kimi Ivey AZ-R ACD s Hi, my name is Roadie, the chapter R mascot. Recently I went on a very special road trip with Assistant Chapter Directors Charles and Kimi Ivey. We traveled to a place named Huntsville, Alabama to attend the international Goldwing rally called Wing Ding. The journey took several days, and we had wonderful adventures. We travelled through the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana and Georgia. Along the way we stopped and visited some very interesting places such as Albuquerque and Gallop New Mexico, Amarillo Texas, Oklahoma City, Memphis, New Orleans and Huntsville. All along the route we met friendly, wonderful people who loved having their picture taken with me. I also got to ride some interesting animals, a horse, a rabbit and even a buffalo! I also got to shop till I dropped; helping my friends purchasing a special hat, something called yarn, t-shirts, jewelry and even chilies! I don t know what was more fun, the shopping, meeting people or the food I was able to try. We went shopping at various places along the way to Alabama, as well as on the return home. I really loved stopping at the trading post in New Mexico; the most fun came in Oklahoma City, where I went to a museum and got some culture and saw something called a Faberge Egg. I also got to meet some famous people along the way. There was one guy in Memphis who could sing really well, and there was a gunslinger in New Mexico whose last name was Kid. Of course we got to eat at some really neat places too-i got to sample everything from seafood to steak to wonderful coffee and breakfast. My friend Kimi insisted the Barbeque in Alabama at a place called Big Bob s was the best place ever. I don t know-i just know everywhere we went we found something great to eat! When we did make it to Wing Ding, I got to do some incredible things, like get on a huge motorcycle, meet some wonderful friends from all over the world, try to win some money with something called 50/50 tickets, as well as meet some other mascots from all over. We also got to go to a special dinner and see a speed painter who was absolutely fantastic. The highlight for me, of course, was competing in the Mascot Contest. I got second place! My friends Charles and Kimi were very happy and we celebrated with a picture of me and Ray Garris. They say he is the big man in charge, so I really felt great having my picture taken with him. I wanted to take a test ride on one of the fantastic Gold Wing motorcycles, but did not have a helmet. I went to a place called the vendor area to find one, and that place was wild! There were so many people and things I just couldn t believe my eyes! I did try on a helmet, but it was a little too big, so I wasn t able to ride. But I did get to meet another mascot, Wingy and he was a lot of fun. After we said goodbye to Alabama we traveled to neighboring Georgia, where I got to attend a fund raiser with Charles and Kimi s old chapter from Atlanta. While there I got to play games, listen to some great music from an era called the 50 s, and meet some more people having lots of fun. I bought tickets for the door prize, and this time, I WON! Everyone was very nice and enjoyed having their picture taken with me. We finally made it back to Arizona after a memorable stop in Fort Stockton where I met the world largest roadrunner. He was huge!!! The trip was marvelous and I would love to go on the road again with anyone willing to take me, so how bout it-any takers??? Thank you to everyone that attended the summer seminars being put on by Chapter R and D. It is support like this that helps us plan for the next round of seminars. ARIZONA ROADWAYS 13 NOVEMBER 2015

20 Notes from R Membership. I recently joined the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and discovered that, they are a big loving family. I ve had lots of fun, even though, I don t own a motorcycle. I attended my first Arizona District Rally, last year in Tucson, Arizona and met a lot of fun and friendly folks. James Ahrenhoersterbauemer, Chapter R Member Editors notes, James started attending some Ice Cream socials with Ken and Cindy Kelley and soon found that Chapter R was a fun place to be. As a family membership member he was welcomed. At the same time he was discovering Chapter R, Chapter R was discovering that he was a likable member and he was included without reservation. Welcome to Chapter R James. We hope you stay a long time. ARIZONA ROADWAYS 20 NOVEMBER 2015
