And as this is going to print, I received late notification that a brother of one of our members has passed away as well. Life is full of unexpected happenings. Some may be great and some may feel like your heart is being ripped apart. I, for one, am glad we have a GW family to hold our hands, give a hug, fight with, and be loved by during these times. Despite numerous physical/health issues the past few years, Sheree never stopped smiling and sharing her love of the people who make this chapter great. We saw less of them the past three years as her health was in decline, but Sheree always had that beaming smile, never complaining about her ailments. At every AZR event, they volunteered to help with various duties. We will miss the wonderful smile of a little lady. We are fortunate to still have Joe with us and hope we continue to see him for a long time. Sheree's funeral and memorial service will be on March 10th at 11:00 AM, St. James Catholic Church, N. 35th Ave, Glendale. If you ve ever attended a rally in GWRRA you ll have a similar experience, at a much lower cost.

4 WW [Bill] & Susan Trask, AZR Chapter Directors Cruising with GWRRA We just returned from our seventh GWRRA cruise, this time sailing to the Panama Canal with 40 other GWRRA members. Am I trying sell you a cabin on the next cruise? Nope, I want to talk about why GWRRA is a great place to meet new people and catch up with old friends. If you ve ever attended a rally in GWRRA you ll have a similar experience, at a much lower cost...! Each time we cruise, in addition to the GWRRA members on board, many that we know already, we try to meet some of the other non-gwrra people. On this cruise we got to be friends with a couple from Tennessee who we met several times for dinner or breakfast. We also met folks from Canada, Maine, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Texas, New Mexico, California and yes, even Arizona Prescott folks who are not GWRRA members. We used a dining system called My Time where we could eat anytime and sit anywhere. This gave us a chance to sit with some different people each day and to learn more about their world, let them learn about ours, teach them about motorcycles and GWRRA and to discover parts of North America we never have been. When you attend a GWRRA event, try to sit with someone you don t know. It may seem discomforting at first, but as you get used to the idea, you may find you meet some very interesting people and learn something new. Of course, you can meet some real jerks, too, and we have experienced that on occasion. But for the most part, we find a real pleasure in sharing experiences and ideas with people. It makes our world whole. You may even find someone you really can connect with. For example, we know a GWRRA couple in Iowa that we have been on three cruises with. Each year when we book we check with them to see if they ll be on board, so we can meet up and enjoy their company. After the next AZR gathering on March 17 th, we ll be heading south to meet with Chapter AZA, the Tucson chapter for their annual fund-raiser. This is where we really get to know the wonderful people that join this organization. We meet folks we don t often see, meet folks we ve never known, and enjoy the company of AZR friends who go with us. That social experience makes us better people and is why GWRRA is a success. ============================================================ Our goal for Chapter AZ-R is to keep things interesting, fun and educational, to make it a place people want to belong to. We are always open to new ideas and if you can see something that will make others come on board, we are happy to discuss it. We also want your help, so if you can give us a few hours each month to help on a project, we'd like to talk to you about it. Chapter AZ-R is the best because it works hard at it. You will see many of the same staff in the new year, plus some excellent new people stepping up into roles they haven't been in. This makes our chapter great we are sharing the leadership with people who can make a positive impact. We look forward to serving all of you in the time ahead. As this was a free admission day for the public it was quite crowed when we arrived and the parking staff (Chandler Police Explorer Scouts) were sending everybody to more remote parking but to our surprise they gave us a police escort with patrol car to more favorable parking up front by the entrance to the museum and we also got the same courtesy escort when we left. Here is a little information about the Arizona Railway Museum. It was founded and incorporated as a non-profit organization in The museum has an extensive collection of railroad cars, engines and railroad memorabilia and today they also had model trains set up and running by the Grand Canyon Model Railroaders. There is plenty to keep you occupied during your visit, you can climb into the cab of a diesel locomotive and blow the horn plus step into the cab of a steam locomotive and ring its bell and blow its horn. Two of their items on display are listed the National Register of Historic Places and they are the Southern Pacific Railroad Locomotive No. SP 2562 and Tender No and the Railroad Steam and Wrecking Crane and Tool Car along with restored train cars from different time periods in our history. The main building is a re-creation of the original Chandler Train Depot and one of the Pullman cars was used by President Taft. I do not know how President Taft could have got around in that car because of his size as the hallways are quite narrow. So as you can see there is plenty to keep you occupied during your visit and this is a place if you have grandchildren would love to visit. After our visit to the Arizona Railway Museum our group headed out for lunch at the Black Bear Diner in Chandler which gave us more time to chat and talk with one another. A true Goldwing rider after riding for the first time: Let s be honest, we were meant for each other I think this holds true for our chapter members; though we might not have a lot in common we all love the Goldwing. Lloyd was able to stop by our February meeting long enough to introduce himself and is excited about all the training that is provided. Hi Roadies Where does the time go? Here it is March already. Well the last couple weeks have been a little on the cool side but we still got some riding in.

Reports from new owners over the next few months will give some good indicators as to how well the riders like the changes.

9 Hi Roadies Where does the time go? Here it is March already. Well the last couple weeks have been a little on the cool side but we still got some riding in. February 17th several of the chapter members rode to Scottsdale GO AZ to view the new Gold wing and Goldwing tour. I must say there have been some major changes. Reports from new owners over the next few months will give some good indicators as to how well the riders like the changes. On February 24th several members rode to the Arizona Railway Museum in chandler. They have some great old steam engines and vintage rail cars dating back 100 years. The museum is primarily dedicated to Arizona and the Southwest, with several of the engines having been used at local Arizona mines. This is a good place to visit when you get a chance. Just a reminder, on April 13 (practice) and 14th (Competition) the Phoenix Police Department will Be hosting the Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition to benefit Special Olympics Arizona. If you ve never attended one of these events please take the time to stop by, you ll have a blast just watching. Police riders come from several states to attend this event. This event will be held at Metro Center on the west side near the Sears Auto Center I WILL POST THIS EVENT ON THE CHAPTER CALENDER AS SOON AS I CAN CONFIRM THE TIMES. Don t forget the breakfast on the 9th, and check the calendar to see if we added any impromptu rides. I will always try to give notice several days prior to the ride. Vests and Chapter Colors People have asked, Do I have to wear a vest? The short answer is no. The reasons that vests are worn are multiple.

The other patches on the back of the vest, identify the city and state in which the chapter is located and the chapter designation.

10 Vests and Chapter Colors People have asked, Do I have to wear a vest? The short answer is no. The reasons that vests are worn are multiple. The 10 inch GWRRA patch on the back shows the name of our organization. The other patches on the back of the vest, identify the city and state in which the chapter is located and the chapter designation. Also if you are an officer or have a staff position in a chapter, it will be designated by a patch. The patches on the front represent many different things. The patch on the left side near the top of the vest represents the volunteer position, that some are currently serving. The patch on the right near the top of the vest represents rider education and your position in the levels program. Your name tag is normally placed on that side. You can also place patches and pins to denote what you have accomplished in GWRRA. You can identify your favorite rides, special places or events that you have attended. There are many ways to personalize your vest and there is no wrong way or ONLY way to add to your vest. It's your vest and it tells your story, just the way you want it told! The purpose behind chapters wearing different colors is to rapidly identify someone from another chapter or district. Each chapter selects their own colors, style of shirt or t-shirt they wear. Much as a sports team has different colors, we know who to look for to meet new friends. We may wear a different color shirt, but we're a big team with many parts. We have some new pull-over shirts on order coming soon. We have nice black vests with and without patches on hand and we have some really nice small flags that you can mount on your CB antenna with the Chapter R logo.
