2 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER 2 The Santos Tour Down Under has been held in Adelaide and regional South Australia since As the event has grown, so too has the cycling knowledge of South Australia along with a general love of all things bikes! This resource will not only provide you with useful background information on the Santos Tour Down Under but also on the sport of cycling in general. It can be used as a starting point for individual and group activities and discussions. If you are a teacher or group leader you can use this kit as a guide and develop your own Santos Tour Down Under and cycling activities suitable for your group and lesson plans. The intent of this resource is to help develop a community of South Australians with an understanding and knowledge that fosters a love of bikes and cycling and embraces the fun and excitement that the Santos Tour Down Under brings to the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia each January. Throughout this starter pack you will see Peter Sagan pop up with some great activities for you to get involved in. Peter is a superstar in the cycling world and by sharing your work, you and up to 5 friends will have the opportunity to meet Peter, talk cycling and each take home a great Santos Tour Down Under Pack. On Sunday 21 January 2018, the winner and their friends will have breakfast at the Hilton Adelaide where Peter will join you to talk all things cycling and have a couple of photos with you before he prepares for the final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. The winner will be selected from the artwork that is shared with the Santos Tour Down Under community through Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using either of the hashtags #MyTDU or #SaganSays.

3 3 HISTORY OF THE RACE Over 11 days South Australia will come alive with all the excitement of the Santos Tour Down Under and Santos Women s Tour Down Under. The event started in 1999 and is owned and managed by managed by Events South Australia on behalf of the South Australian Government and all South Australians. This is also the team who bring Father Christmas to town in the Credit Union Christmas Pageant each year! Local South Australian rider Stuart O Grady won the race in its first year and since then other South Australians have won the race along with international riders. Every year the event has become bigger and bigger and is now the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere. Traditionally, races that were part of the UCI WorldTour were only held in Europe, but in 2008 the Santos Tour Down Under became the first UCI WorldTour event to be held outside of Europe. What is even more exciting is that because the Santos Tour Down Under is held in January, we get to be the first event each year on this international cycling calendar. The Santos Tour Down Under and Santos Women s Tour Down Under get to visit so many beautiful places around South Australia, some of the favourites are the beautiful beaches, historic country towns and busy city centre. The 2017 event had 839,000 spectators line the roads of South Australia that s a lot of people! In fact, it is enough people to fill Adelaide Oval just over 15 times! In 2018, the Santos Tour Down Under will celebrate its 20th birthday and with the world s top cyclists back once more to stamp their authority on the new season, the Santos Tour Down Under and Santos Women s Tour Down Under are looking to be even more exciting with new race stages and a wide range of associated events from January.

Tour de France winners Cadel Evans, Chris Froome, Oscar Pereiro, Andy Schleck, Alberto Contador and Carlos Sastre have all raced in Adelaide, alongside Aussie legends Simon Gerrans, Richie Porte and Rohan Dennis. 6 2018 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER 6 There's the race - and then there's everything else. At the Santos Tour Down Under and Santos Women ' s Tour Down Under you ' re part of the action, whether cheering road side or getting out and riding yourself. If you want to discover more about bikes and all things cycling then head to the City of Adelaide Tour Village in Victoria Square. The latest bikes and equipment, big screens, food and drinks and team mechanics are all based here and it s also home to the free team presentation and opening night concert on 13 January. Councils hosting Santos Tour Down Under stages are proud to put on family friendly street parties and other entertainment so make sure you check out what is happening in your area and head there with your family and friends. If you see yourself as the next Santos Tour Down Under winner or just starting out on your bike, then make sure you check out the rides of the Subaru Breakaway Series, all of which you can get involved in: The Bupa Challenge Tour presented by The Advertiser gives you a chance to ride a full or part race stage on the same day as the pros, this one is for those of you who ride regularly and are comfortable out riding on the open roads. 8 8 TEAMS COMPETING IN THE 2018 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER WILL BE 18 UCI WORLDTOUR TEAMS AND THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TEAM MAKING 19 TEAMS IN TOTAL. Each team consists of seven riders plus their team manager and support crew. The support crew of a team will usually consist of mechanics, doctor, masseuse and media manager. The teams compete for a number of awards each stage and overall at the conclusion of the race. Don t forget to use #MyTDU #SaganSays BIKES While the bikes the professional riders use look like everyday bikes they are built to meet very specific standards and to give the rider as much speed and handling ability as possible. Bikes in the professional peloton have to weigh at least 6.8kg and the team mechanics work to keep the bikes as light as possible. How much do you think your bike weighs? 14 Activity Pod 14 Name: EQUIPMENT HELMETS SAGAN SAYS! Just like you when you go out for a ride, every rider in the peloton must also wear their helmet. Riders can travel up to more than 80km/h so a helmet is very important should a rider crash (we generally call it falling off our bike). In the peloton each team has a different looking helmet, to help people pick who they are. Whenever you go out for a ride you should always wear your helmet that complies with Australian safety standards just remember a helmet can be replaced much easier than your head. Using your bike, helmet and favourite riding outfit, film a 30 second video clip explaining the importance of bike safety and being visible when out riding. 15 Activity Pod 15 Name: EQUIPMENT CLOTHING Professional Cyclists wear slightly different clothing to what most of us do when we head out for a ride. Instead of jeans and a t-shirt they wear a full cycling kit in their team design made from Lycra this assists in making them quicker on the bike! A cycling kit generally consists of: team jersey, bib-knicks, socks, cleats (specific cycling shoes), socks, cycling cap and gloves Research the team kits of the 2018 WorldTour teams and then come up with your own team kit design. You can use images you find online or in magazines or draw and colour your own.

16 Activity Pod 16 Name: FEED ZONE SAGAN SAYS! My favourite food to eat while out riding is rice cakes prepared by the team chef, nutritional power bars and bananas. Fill the musette bag (feed bag) below with what you would pack to help you race to the front of the peloton. See how your bag compares to mine and others in your group. Before you jump on your bike, it s important to make sure you ve topped up your fuel and fluids to prepare you for the journey ahead. Don t eat too close to exercise, to avoid stomach upset. If you re exercising first thing in the morning and you don t have any time, you may need to have a late supper the night before. You can also sip on water or sports drink before your ride. Carbohydrates are your body s main fuel source. The body stores carbohydrates in your muscles and liver as glycogen. As you ride your body will burn through your glycogen stores, using this to fuel your activity. It s important to start with full glycogen stores and top up during your ride by choosing carbohydraterich foods before, during and after you ride to help maximise your capacity while riding and to enhance recovery. To find out more about what to eat if you are taking part in one of the Santos Tour Down Under recreational rides visit Bupa s website As the pros are riding for hours at a time, they aren t able to carry enough food on them to keep them fuelled. So at a set location along race routes, a feed zone is set up for the riders to collect more food to help them refuel and finish the race. Just like a car needs fuel to move, so to do the riders and they can burn thousands of calories a day when they are on the bike. At a feed zone, riders will collect a feed bag (musette bag) filled with high energy foods such as bananas, sandwiches, energy bars/ gels or rice cakes. As most of us aren t racing in the peloton when we go out for a ride we have the luxury of being able to stop at our favourite bakery or café to refuel. 17 SANTOS BEST DRESSED TOWN COMPETITION 17 The 2018 Santos Tour Down Under will travel through 81 different South Australian towns. The riders and visitors love to see colour and activity as they are riding along and it is a great opportunity to dress up the towns, schools, and homes. TV cameras filming the race keep a look out for anything interesting that they can talk about and show to the thousands of people watching from home and around the world. This is a great opportunity for groups to have some fun and come up with something creative! If your school or home is along the race route why not get involved? Be as creative as you like so start thinking about what you could do and get your group together. Not along the race route but want to get involved? Then why not speak to the local council or businesses about partnering with them to provide artwork or decorations that can be displayed on fences or show windows along the race route - just don t forget to nominate! 18 SANTOS WOMEN S TOUR DOWN UNDER 18 The Santos Women s Tour Down Under runs alongside the Santos Tour Down Under and sees the world s top female cyclists race on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia. The Santos Women s Tour Down Under will now be ranked as a 2.1 class race on the UCI international calendar (up from 2.2) making it one step closer to achieving the long-term goal of WorldTour status. The new classification means more points on offer to the riders and teams, giving riders more incentive to start their cycling season in Adelaide. The 2017 Santos Women s Tour (UCI 2.2 class event) saw 102 riders from 19 different countries contest the peloton with the overall honours going to ORICA-Scott s Amanda Spratt. In 2018, 17 teams of elite international and national female cyclists will return to battle it out over 4 stages. You can find all the stage information online. Activity Pod The 2018 Santos Women s Tour Down Under trophies will be designed and made by the team at the Jam Factory, a South Australian not for profit organisation offering local artists and designers a space to work and create contemporary Australian craft pieces. Using recycled materials around the classroom or at home, come up with your own trophy that you would like to receive if you won an event.
