This year, Officer Jay Brennan was nominated by the Ormond Beach Police Department. Officer Brennan, of the Outreach Unit, was selected as a nominee because of his work in bringing members of law enforcement and Ormond Beach citizens of all ages together through various programs. In addition to utilizing existing programs such as D.A.R.E. and Coffee with Cop, he s developed Buddy Cop Safety Show, Teen Dating 101, Five O Club, and Santa on Patrol. Officer Brennan also helps educate citizens by attending neighborhood watch programs, hosting S.L.A.P. (Self-defense for Ladies and Assault Prevention), Badges & Brunch, and Mommy, Me & Safety, classes. He s also reached out to the sports-minded community with Back the Blue Sports, Badges and Boardshorts Beach Event and COPS & Joggers Beach 5k. Officer Brennan is always willing to go the extra mile to achieve whatever the goal is and is often found working nights or weekends to get the job done. Officer Brennan works hard to mentor fellow officers and is infectious in his drive to serve the community, often inspiring others. Chamber Leadership Graduates The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class XIV held their graduation ceremony at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 4th. The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class was created to provide information, resources, and support for the development of business and community leaders. Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington was on hand as a guest speaker and gave the Leadership Class graduates their certificates. Among the graduates were Pastor Chris Chandler (pictured above) and two City law enforcement personnel (pictured below). Sergeants Amber Michaelis and Bill Warmington attended Class #14, which started on March 18 and ran through May 4. They met seven times and discussed various leadership concepts and issues. They were exposed to a variety of leaders from within the community and participated in a community service project. This year the service project involved a landscaping and repair event at one of our local veteran s residence. Officer Brennan worked Patrol for 12 years, in which time he was a Field Training Officer and held numerous instructor positions including General Instruction, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Chemical Weapons Instructor, Expandable Baton Instructor, Tactical Handcuffing Instructor and Taser Instructor. The last two years Officer Brennan became a D.A.R.E. Officer and Crime Prevention Practitioner. We thank the hard work of Officer Brennan and all law enforcement professionals who help keep us safe.

3 PAGE 3 Gymnastics Team Takes Tampa! As predicted, the Ormond Beach Team Girls hit the floor at the 2017 AAU State Competition like champs and brought home a series of medals to signify their wins in their respective categories. The team was in Tampa May 5-7 for the competition and showed excellent sportsmanship, team comradery, and dedication to their sport as evident by the medals they received and the smiles on their faces. Congratulations girls! Police Unity Tour In May 1997, the Police Unity Tour was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department in an effort to bring about public awareness of law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices. The tour started with 18 riders on a bicycle ride from Florham Park, New Jersey, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., which raised $18,000. This May, the group proudly announced that the Police Unity Tour was able donate $2.5 million to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund bringing its total donations to over $20 million. In late 2005, the Police Unity Tour pledged $5 million in support of the National Law Enforcement Museum. Inspired by its commitment and our motto, "We Ride for Those Who Died," the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has selected the Police Unity Tour organization to be the sponsor of the Museum's Hall of Remembrance. Having completed the $5 million commitment to the Museum in 2009, the Police Unity Tour dedicated the 2010 ride to the restoration of the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The $1.1 million restoration project included the re-engraving, coating, and sealing of the 18,983 names on the memorial as well as the cleaning of the walls and other memorial improvements. In 2011, the Police Unity Tour became the official sponsor of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund s Officer of the Month Program. Officers of the Month are honored at a special awards luncheon each May in Washington, D.C., during National Police Week, and they are featured in the Memorial Fund s annual calendar. The Police Unity Tour is also proud to sponsor the NLEOMF s Recently Fallen Alerts. The Ormond Beach Police Department participated in the Police Unity Tour in 2015 and again this year. 4 PAGE 4 Art in the Park The 45th Annual Art in the Park took place under sunny skies on Saturday, May 6 th and Sunday, May 7 th. Thousands of people attended the two-day event which was sold out with 100 artists and crafters, entertainment, and food vendors. Best of Show: Michael Nelson, Pottery Crafters 1st Place Robin Sapp, Stained Glass Arts and crafts were judged, which included a single award of $1500 for Best of Show in the Fine Arts category. The winner will be featured on the main stage in Rockefeller Gardens at the 2018 Art in the Park event. Additional awards included 1st Place $400, 2nd Place $300, Merit Award $200, and Honorable Mention $100 which were presented to four fine artists and four crafters. Returning for the second year was the Girl Scouts Art Exhibit presented by Sunrise Community. The exhibit was inside The Casements and featured multimedia pieces created by 5-18 year old Girl Scouts from Volusia County and throughout Central Florida. This impressive show of creativity hosted six categories including photography, painting, drawing, sculpting, textiles, and collage. A fashion show and awards presentation was held on the North Lawn of The Casements Sunday. The Girl Scouts also staffed the Free Kids Craft Zone in the food and entertainment area where children came to make a special gift for Mother s Day and also contributed to the coloring mural. 6 PAGE 6 NOTICE TO WATER CUSTOMERS & EFFLUENT RECLAIMED WATER CUSTOMERS The City of Ormond Beach is requesting all customers to voluntarily conserve water usage at this time due to the persistent dry conditions affecting hydrologic conditions within our area. The St. Johns River Water Management (District) recently issued a water shortage warning for surface and groundwater sources within the District to include the City s water service area. The City requests your cooperation until the District issues additional information or until our area receives significant rainfall to replenish water supplies. All landscaping irrigation users are urged to voluntarily reduce their water use by limiting irrigation to no more than two (2) days per week as required by City Code for current daylight savings time period. Please also note landscaping irrigation is prohibited between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The District s order also indicates that all classes of water users are encouraged to reduce their water use and conserve to the maximum extent possible. The City requests all effluent reclaimed (reuse) water customers also reduce their use of reclaimed water resources during this period. The recent dry conditions and resulting high customer irrigation demand for the City s reclaimed water resources reduce typical tank storage levels. As a result, reuse customers may experience intermittent service disruptions due to lower than normal tank storage levels or until such time that customer demands decrease with improved rainfall conditions. We appreciate consideration by all customers for use of best available water conservation practices until such time that our hydrologic conditions improve. Water Distribution System Disinfection The City of Ormond Beach Utilities Division will temporarily modify the disinfectant used for the City s potable (drinking) water system. Beginning on May 15, and continuing through June 5, disinfection of the water distribution system will be performed with application of free chlorine (a stronger disinfectant) rather than chloramines (a longer-lasting disinfectant comprised of combined chlorine-ammonia). This temporary disinfectant conversion, in conjunction with a coordinated flushing exercise, is a common practice for enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of disinfection in water distribution systems and is recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection. The normal use of the chloramines disinfectant will resume upon completion of the conversion period. During this period, the water continues to be of the highest quality and totally safe to drink. Customers may experience a slight difference in the taste and odor of the water as a result of the alternate disinfectant used. Customers on dialysis using proportioning machines to prepare dialysate are advised to contact their physician to obtain the appropriate steps to accommodate this change in water disinfectant use. Customers having fish tanks or aquatic species are advised to contact a professional aquarist to minimize any adverse effects on these items associated with chlorine. 7 PAGE 7 National Gym Association Gator Classic Bodybuilding Competition The National Gym Association Gator Classic Bodybuilding Competition was held at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 6. The competition included men s division for bodybuilding fitness, and physique, and women s divisions for figure and bodybuilding. The bodybuilders are required to comply with regulations that prohibit the use of any type of performance enhancing drugs, and they must submit to testing. Each competitor was judged on muscular development and posing skill before a panel of professional bodybuilding judges. The competitors appreciated the applause of family members and friends supporting them from the audience. Fanciful Faces & Figures Gallery Exhibit Nearly every month, The Casements gallery features original artwork; May is no exception! On Thursday, May 11 th, self-taught artist Barbara Perkins hosted an opening reception for her Fanciful Faces and Figures exhibit from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Perkins notes that her art evokes beauty, freshness, simplicity and mystery through acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, and mixed media. Upon entering Rockefeller s former dining room, the bold colors and calculated brushstrokes immediately capture one s attention. Portraits, both abstract and realistic, serve as the display s overarching theme. Perkins states that her figure paintings aim to tell a story while evoking mystery and emotional expression. Specifically, many of her paintings draw inspiration from Pablo Picasso. While Perkins Halloween Mayhem subtly references Picasso s black and white political piece, Guernica, her bold Ode to Picasso pays direct homage to Woman with Hat and Fur Collar. Nevertheless, her artwork provides a fresh and original perspective. With a professional background in nursing, Perkins taught courses at several schools and colleges before pursuing painting in She serves as a member of the Florida Woman s Art Association, DeLand Museum, Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Daytona Beach Art League, and the Artist Workshop of New Smyrna Beach. Over the years her artwork has won several awards and recognitions. Fanciful Faces and Figures will remain on display in The Casements gallery from May 11 to June 1. 8 PAGE 8 The Casements Summer Schedule Beginning on June 1, and continuing through August, The Casements will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tours will ONLY be given in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. The Casements will be open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and tours will ONLY be given at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Large group tours are by appointment only. Those wishing to schedule a tour for a large group, or for additional information, should call PARKS The Leisure Services Parks staff repaired uneven wooden boards on the walkway at Bailey Riverbridge. A atomizer was installed in the ladies room at Cassen Park. At the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, benches were repositioned on the playground, and a new swing was installed. At Central Park III, loose top boards and walk boards were repaired. The worn 4x4 practice pitching mounds were replaced at Nova Community Park. Park benches were secured at The Casements. As usual, citywide safety inspections were performed of all parks and equipment and weekly inspections were done of parks facilities for reservations. 10 PAGE 10 FLOW Mobile The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) mobile unit will be at City Hall, 22 South Beach Street, on Tuesday, May 23, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. FLOW is a standalone mobile office with technology to provide most motorists needs. It provides drivers license/id card change of address, renewals, replacements, and renewals and replacements of vehicle registration and disabled parking permits, as well as other needs. The only thing FLOW does not provide is for the drivers license road test. FLOW brings services to the local communities offering a convenience to citizens while saving them time and gas. Before visiting, please go to to learn about licensing and ID requirements and make sure you have everything you need when you visit FLOW so you don t have to make a second trip. 11 PAGE 11 Motorcycle & Bicycle Awareness Month This month, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is reminding motorists statewide to share the road with motorcycles and bicycles in an effort to reduce crashes involving these vulnerable road users. DHSMV s Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month is in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Police Chiefs Association, Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Trucking Association. We are almost never on the road alone- we share it with vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles and pedestrians, said DHSMV Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes. Learn your roles and responsibilities on the road and look out for one another to ensure everyone can Arrive Alive. In 2016 preliminarily, there were 10,297 motorcycle crashes and 6,580 bicycle crashes in Florida, or more than 46 motorcycle or bicycle crashes every day. As a result of these crashes in 2016, there were 501 motorcycle and 133 bicycle fatalities. The Florida Highway Patrol is asking both motorists and motorcyclist to use caution and Share the Road, said Colonel Gene Spaulding, Director of the Florida Highway Patrol. Safety is FHP s number one priority and by staying alert, drivers and riders can help create a safer road environment for everyone. Motorcyclists under the age of 30 accounted for almost 30 percent of all motorcycle crashes, and almost 82 percent of all motorcyclists involved in a crash were men. Motorists are reminded never to share the lane with a motorcycle, maintain a four-second buffer zone between you and a motorcyclist and increase space when encountering bad weather and road conditions. Do not follow too closely behind a motorcycle or bicycle. To best equip Florida s motorcycle operators for safe, responsible motorcycling, the DHSMV administers the Florida Rider Training Program, said Robert Kynoch, Director of Motorist Services. Through this statewide program, certified course providers educate motorcycle operators on the fundamentals necessary to ride safely and avoid crashes while sharing the road in Florida. Although bicyclists age had the highest number of bicycle crashes out of all the age groups, bicyclists age had the highest number of fatalities from bicycle crashes with one-third of bicyclists killed in a crash in In Florida, a bicycle is legally defined as a vehicle and has all of the privileges, rights and responsibilities on public roads (except for expressways) that a motor vehicle operator does. Motorists and bicyclists should refer to the official Florida Driver License Handbook for more safety tips about operating on roadways. Sharing the road responsibly is critical, especially considering the number of police officers who work on bicycles and motorcycles to keep our residents safe, said Coconut Creek Police Chief Butch Arenal, President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association. Stay alert, watch for these vehicles and help us keep Florida s roads and highways safer for all users. Last January, Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis, our Gentle Giant hero, was killed in a traffic crash while riding his motorcycle to the scene of the assassination of Orlando Police Sergeant Debra Clayton. To promote traffic safety, and to honor Deputy Lewis, the Florida Sheriffs Association proudly endorses the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month this May, stated Sheriff Jerry Demings, President of the Florida Sheriffs Association. Two-wheeled vehicles are some of the most vulnerable on the road, and that means we must be extra vigilant to ensure their safety, said Ken Armstrong, President and CEO of the Florida Trucking Association. Knowing the proper way to share the road with bicycles, motorcycles and commercial vehicles needs to be a priority for every motorist on the road. Especially in the trucking industry, where many of our own are motorcycle enthusiasts, this issue is an important one because big blind spots and small vehicles don t always mix well.
