The South Ormond Sports Club 9th grade basketball team took 2nd place recently at the Disney Spring Classic which was held April 19th through April 21st. Over 270 AAU boys basketball teams brought all their heart and skill to the AAU Spring Classic. Over 3,000 athletes took to the courts in a battle for the top spot as AAU champions, to take home the hardware and earn a bid to AAU Basketball National Championships this summer. The team ended the tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss overall and everyone played extremely hard. It is still very early in the season and all three teams are working hard to prepare for Nationals in July. The 10th and 11th grade teams also competed in the Disney Spring Classic event and had strong showings too. Congratulations to all the teams and the coaching staff!

2 PAGE 2 Prohibited Sign Removal Enforcement The Neighborhood Improvement Division (NID) is initiating an enforcement program regarding the enforcement of prohibited signs placed on the rights-of-way within the City of Ormond Beach. There are a variety of sign types that are classified as prohibited. Prohibited signs include all signs placed within the rights-of-way, i.e., portable, revolving, snipe, wind, human directional, balloons or other inflatable items just to name a few. Portable and snipe are the two sign types that are typically placed in the rights-ofway on a regular basis. Over the years, the NID staff has made attempts to reduce and eliminate the placement of these signs within our city. This division has spent numerous hours on weekends and during the week removing these signs in hopes of discouraging businesses and citizens from placing these signs in the rights-of-way. Yet signs continue to be installed in the rights-of-way throughout the week and weekend. Beginning June 1, 2013, the Neighborhood Improvement Division will begin taking a more proactive approach in gaining compliance with the Land Development Code. Upon observation of a sign placed in the right-of-way, the person or company responsible will be issued a notice of violation for each sign violation observed. The notice will document the date the violation was observed and location of the sign. The sign will be removed and photographs of the sign locations will be taken for record keeping purposes. Should the violation be repeated once the notice of violation is issued, a $200 citation for each violation will be issued and the case/s scheduled for hearing before the Special Magistrate. During the hearing, the Special Magistrate has the ability to order continuing daily accruing fine/s if the person or company responsible is determined by the Special Magistrate to have violated the City Code with regard to placement of the sign/s. 3 PAGE 3 Walking with the Manager On Friday, May 3rd, at 8:00 a.m., Walking with the Manager" will begin at Cassen Park. The entire walk will be approximately 2 miles. Kevin Gray, Public Works Operations Manager, will be the City Manager s guest walker. Citizens are invited to take a walk with us, ask questions, share comments and offer suggestions. Please put on your walking shoes and join us. Public Safety Awareness Day On Saturday, April 27 th, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., the City of Ormond Beach will be holding its first Public Safety Awareness Day at Prince of Peace Church located at 600 South Nova Road. There will be vehicle displays, exhibits and demonstrations from the following participants: Ormond Beach Fire Department Ormond Beach Public Works Drug Enforcement Administration Drug Take Back Child Seat Safety Inspections (OBPD) Civil Air Patrol Florida Fish and Wildlife Volusia County Beach Patrol Florida Power & Light American Red Cross with the Big Red Bus CodeRED Hawaiian Tropic Ormond Beach Police Department U.S. Coast Guard Halifax Humane Society Pet Shot Clinic Dept. of Motor Vehicles FLOW (Florida Licensing on Wheels) Mobile Florida Department of Transportation EVAC Volusia County Sheriff s Office Florida Hospital Daytona State Police Academy Arrow Tow Truck The Police Department and Florida Hospital will be fitting for bicycle helmets and providing the helmets FREE. Additionally, there will be a Kids Zone with a monster sand pile, face painting, music provided by DJ Patch Productions, and more! We will also have a Hot Diggity Dog Cookout and give-aways (FREE while supplies last). This event is FREE and there is plenty of parking.

4 PAGE 4 Florida Licensing on Wheels PLEASE NOTE IN RED - TIME HAS BEEN REVISED. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has implemented the Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) program. FLOW is a standalone mobile office with technology to provide most motorists needs. It provides driver license/id card change of address, renewals, replacements, and renewals and replacements of vehicle registration and disabled parking permits, as well as other needs. The FLOW brings services to the local communities offering a convenience to citizens while saving them time and gas as well. Beginning on May 6 th, the FLOW will be in the City Hall parking lot, 22 South Beach Street, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on the first Monday of every month providing this service to our citizens. Alternate arrangements will be made when the first Monday is a holiday. In addition to beginning monthly visits in May, the FLOW will be participating at Picnic on the Plaza for the Earth Day celebration on April 25 th at City Hall, and at the Public Safety Awareness Day on April 27 th at Prince of Peace Church, located at 600 S. Nova Road. Before visiting, please go to to learn about licensing and ID requirements and make sure you have everything you need when you visit FLOW so you don t have to make a second trip. Hand Avenue Road Closure Beginning on Monday, April 29 th, Hand Avenue, from the east end of the 600 Block (approx. 1,000 feet east of Oak Brook Drive) to Center Street, will be closed due to construction for the next 5-6 months, or approximately until October The City is in the process of constructing roadway upgrades and utility improvements. 5 PAGE 5 On Wednesday, April 24th, City staff from the Engineering Division and members from Zev Cohen and Associates, held a public meeting at The Casements for residents of John Anderson Drive. The purpose of this meeting was to provide them with information on the upcoming construction work to be done on their street. Approximately 30 residents attended this meeting where they were provided with estimated time schedules for construction and to let them know how they could stay involved and receive updates throughout the project s construction. John Anderson Drive Public Meeting Field of Dreams One of the major parts of the softball and baseball field that requires a lot of TLC is the infield clay. The fields have to be dragged several times, and here we see the Athletic Fields Division of the Leisure Services Department dragging the softball fields at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in between games during a Lady Renegades softball tournament. City staff works hard to take care of these fields for all sporting events, even on weekends. In addition, the infields must be properly marked for play for the next game and done so in a timely manner. We have our field of dreams, thanks to these dedicated workers. 6 PAGE 6 Flagpole Repair The halyard, which is the rope used to raise and lower a flag, had to be replaced at Riviera Park this past week. The Parks Division of the Leisure Services Department was given a way to the top from the assistance of the Streets Division of Public Works and their bucket truck. Steady does it for City staff, as they teeter around the flag pole installing the new pulley. It takes a bit of nerve and balance to make such repairs and we thank them for that! Park Enhancements! This week our Parks Division of the Leisure Services Department was given a helping hand by the Public Works Stormwater Division. Here you see City staff removing old trash receptacles and replacing them with new ones at the Riverbend Nature Park. Keeping up with maintenance and preservation of our gorgeous parks throughout the City continues and the work increases this time of year. Getting out into the nice weather and enjoying the great outdoors is why we take pride in our Ormond Beach Parks. Signs were also installed in order to help direct visitors at the Nova Community Center s gymnastics building and the renovated Magic Forest Playground. 7 PAGE 7 Who Am I? The Ormond Beach Art Guild partnered with 20 young children ages 7-10 to share their artistic talents with a new generation. This was a free, two-week class taught by members of the Art Guild using environmentally safe recycled materials and water-based paints donated by our friend, Brian Daly of Color Wheel Paints. The theme of the art class was Who Am I? We don t know who enjoyed the class more, the instructors or the children! Some very imaginative and creative masterpieces were created. The children s artwork will be on display in The Casements Gallery during Art in the Park through May 10th. SONC is Heating Up! This turned into one of those perfect weeks that spring is known for in Ormond Beach. We had just enough sunshine to add sunscreen, but not so much that you could not enjoy the outside activities. The park beat at South Ormond Neighborhood Center was nice and steady the last few days with the mornings and early afternoons ideal for the outdoors. All areas of the facility were in full use. Games were played out on the fields, the playgrounds were enjoyed and the famous Splash Pad is starting to heat up as well. 8 PAGE 8 Indian Cultural Festival Fun, music, dancing, good food, and a look into the Indian culture was what it was all about at the 2nd Annual Indian Cultural Festival in Rockefeller Gardens on Saturday, April 13th. Sponsored by the Indian Cultural Society of Daytona Beach, the event was free to the public. Despite a bleak forecast, it was a beautiful day in Rockefeller Gardens for all visitors. The face painting, native dancing, and the inflatables were particularly popular. Celtic Festival Concert Ormond Beach MainStreet presented the Celtic Festival Opening Night concert at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, April 19th. Headlining the concert was the harp duo of Grainne Hambly from Ireland and William Jackson from Scotland. Grainne Hambly is the winner of the All-Ireland Harp competition. The pair played harp, tin whistle, and concertina throughout a set of tunes from both Ireland and Scotland. The pop trio of Drever, Mcguire, and Young is one of the popular and sought after musical groups in their native Scotland. Their songs and humorous storytelling entertained the audience. The concert was a joyous beginning to the Ormond Beach MainStreet Celtic Festival.

9 PAGE 9 Queens of Country Perform Queens of Country Music starring Lorri Gill and the Country Kings performed in concert at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 21 st. The concert paid tribute to the music of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette. The traditional style and the heartfelt, emotional delivery of the lyrics are the hallmarks of all three of these Queens of Country music. Their music continues to remain popular today. Lorri Gill and the Country Kings perform frequently throughout venues in the Central Florida area and have many fans. The audience showed their appreciation for the excellent musicianship of this group with standing ovations after many of the songs. Body Building Competition The Drug Free Athletes Coalition Gator Classic Bodybuilding Competition was held at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 20 th. The competition includes both men and women in seventeen different divisions. Natural bodybuilders are required to comply with regulations that prohibit the use of any type of muscle development enhancing drugs, and must submit to testing. Each competitor was judged on muscular development and posing skill before a panel of professional bodybuilding judges. Each competitor enjoyed the applause of the audience as they received their trophies.

10 PAGE 10 Spring Cleaning With all the shiny costumes and all the beautiful team uniforms, all the perfect faces and all the ribbons in the hair, there is actually a lot more to it than glamour at the Nova Gymnastics Center! Much hard work goes in to running the Center. Constant cleaning, straightening, paperwork and rosters along with some sweat and labor happens daily. In the picture to the right are Coach Lori and Coach Madison with the task of some spring cleaning. This past week they took part in straightening the storage closet to make room for new arts and crafts for the Community Center. Pickleball Fever Pickleball is going strong at the Nova Community Center. Each morning a group of five to fifteen pickleball players meet to play. One player has gotten inventive and has made an automatic ball serving machine. The machine helps the players to learn a better way to hold the paddle to control the return of the serve. If you are interested in playing pickleball, come by the Nova Community Center any weekday morning. The players would love to have new competition. Along with their field maintenance duties, our Athletic Fields Division of the Leisure Services Department also has the task of delivering and setting up the portable bleachers when required for special events. This past week City staff transported these bleachers to Rockefeller Gardens for extra spectator seating at The Celtic Festival which took place on Saturday and Sunday. Once our event is completed, they then break down and haul the bleachers back to the Ormond Beach Sports Complex for storage...until the next event. Thanks guys!
