Pictured are EDC staff, Calvary students, teachers and parents on the EDC porch After a brief review of the five senses, the students were divided into three groups and rotated through three stations to experience using their senses to learn about nature in Central Park and the EDC facility. Station 1 was a tour through the EDC which focused on the sense of taste and how different species use taste to survive. Station 2 was a guided walk down G.F Althouse Trail to use their sight, hearing and sense of smell to observe living organisms and compare differences among species. Station 3 was a handson activity where the students used touch only to identify replica furs, bones, feathers, shells, leaves and pinecones. The field trip wrapped up with a brief review of key learning points from the day. Thank you Calvary Christian second grade for visiting us for a field trip!

2 PAGE 2 Once Upon a Storytime Tea Party Children and their parents gathered at The Casements on Tuesday morning, March 19, to participate in Once Upon a Storytime s tea party. From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., over 70 visitors joined in to enjoy the party. This special event took place inside The Casements and started with a reading of three stories, all themed around tea parties. The children gathered in front of the atrium fireplace and listened closely to the fun stories. Then it was time for the tea party! The doors into The Casements Gallery opened to display a beautifully decorated tea party room. The tables were draped with floral and polka dot tablecloths adorned with floral centerpieces. Colorful streamers and lights were draped from the walls. The tables were decorated with plates of fun food and tea cups at each setting. The children enjoyed a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into flower shapes, a fruit cup with a variety of delectable fresh fruit, assorted cheese and crackers, and cinnamon rolls. Also on the table was a tray of sprinkle cookies for each child to enjoy. The children were served apple juice in their tea cups to sip on. Parents were also served lunch and could choose hot tea or water. The children and parents enjoyed the afternoon talking and laughing with one another. 3 PAGE 3 Coffee with a Cop at Café One Coffee With a Cop is a program that brings police officers and the community they serve together, over coffee, to discuss issues and learn more about each other. The mission is to break down barriers between police officers and the citizens they serve by building relationships, one cup of coffee at a time. Café One at 405 North US1 hosted the latest Coffee With a Cop during the afternoon of March 19. Several officers attended the event and the restaurant was standing room only with citizens who received a free coffee compliments of Café One. Officers talked with the citizens and had positive conversations with the community and addressed a variety of concerns. Pictured is Sergeant Borzner talking with two residents John Denver Tribute John Denver Tribute, starring Ron Rich, performed in concert at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 17. John Denver is known for many hit songs including Leaving On A Jet Plane, which he wrote for Peter, Paul, and Mary. He became famous for performing songs including Thank God I m a Country Boy, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High and Calypso. 4 PAGE 4 St. Patrick s Day Kids Craft Program Picture of children and adults working on craft project A Day to Shine The 2019 Shining S.T.A.R.S. Pageant was a huge success! This year's show had 45 contestants, 12 performers and two Masters of Ceremonies. The show took place on March 16 at the Performing Arts Center. On Saturday, March 16, the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) held a kids St. Patrick s Day craft making event for the upcoming holiday. Eleven kids along with four parents were able to use their creativity to make three different crafts. Led by three of our talented EDC volunteers, the kids painted rocks gold and added glitter. They also made rainbows with a pot of gold at the end. Their final project was a very nice shamrock sun catcher craft. The kids did a great job! At the end, all were rewarded for their hard work with not only their crafts to take home, but also a replica gold coin and a small St. Patrick s Day bubble blowing kit. Tommy and Christie sang a beautiful duet of "Everything Will Be Alright." All of the contestants stood proudly to receive their crowns and showed the audience just how brightly they shine.

5 PAGE 5 New Firefighter Training Firefighters are conducting new recruit orientation training for recently hired firefighters Francis Autorino, Garrett Fiske and Joseph Schmidt. The two week long training will cover topics and provide hands -on learning with activities such as ground and aerial procedures, water supply, safety and survival, vehicle extrication and city geography. PARKS Pictured is a new firefighter receiving instruction on using fire hoses The Parks staff has been hard at work repairing a top cap on the railing at Cassen Park. At Sanchez Park, staff moved a bench to the playground area, installed a new bicycle rack, and tightened a playground swing. Two toddler swings were replaced at the Magic Forest Playground. Staff poured two columns and mounted six cleats for the setup for Movies on the Halifax. Curbing was repaired at Andy Romano Beachfront Park. Soil was filled in near the mailbox at the Nova Community Center. A drain plug was installed in the airplane toy on the playground at Central Park I. A large hole was filled on the grounds at the Nova Community Center. Staff cleaned up trash around the grounds at Riviera Park. All park reservations were posted at various facilities.

6 PAGE 6 Adult Volleyball The City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department is once again offering Spring Adult Volleyball for ages 18 and older beginning March 18. The first day (Monday) is free open gym play, with a novice court and a competitive court. Times are 6:15 8:15 p.m. Come in any time during the two hours to play. Registration is now taking place through March 25. Fees are $31.00 for City of Ormond Beach residents (proof of residency required) and $46.50 for non-residents. Registration will take place at the Registration Office, 399 N. U.S. 1. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Games will be held every Monday from 6:15 8:15 p.m. at the Nova Community Center Gymnasium, 440 North Nova Road, from March 18 through May 13. 7 PAGE 7 EDC Seeks Volunteers The City of Ormond Beach s Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) is currently seeking volunteers to assist with daily operations and scheduled events. The EDC provides environmental education to the public through regular program series, lectures, field trips, summer camp, special events, and more. EDC Volunteers can provide daily exhibit tours, plan programs, assist with community events, lead field trips, and coordinate outreach efforts. Tomoka Marathon On Saturday, March 23, 2019, the Tomoka Marathon, Tomoka Half Marathon, and the Tomoka 5K Run will be taking place in the City of Ormond Beach and the unincorporated areas of Ormond Beach (The Loop). Attendance is expected to be large and local traffic will be affected until the races are completed. The event is expected to be completed by 1300 hours. Although roadways will not be completely shut down, traffic will be held during the event to allow the participants to clear the intersections.
