Six youngsters from across Volusia County traveled to The Casements as part of their program to visit historical and cultural places throughout the county. Their visit on Saturday was all about Presidents Day. After being asked why they would have the following Monday off from school, the children began to realize the significance of the day. Did you know that if Abraham Lincoln were alive today, his birthday on February 12th would have made him 202 years old? And, our first president, George Washington would have celebrated his 279th birthday on February 22nd. The children enjoyed listening to Lew Welge, who dressed as Abraham Lincoln and shared stories and fun facts about the 16th President of the United States. As a special treat, the children made cherry tarts topped with cut out stars as the presidential treat for the day. As the tarts baked, the FEBRUARY 25, 2011 A Presidential Treat children learned interesting facts about our country and the great individuals that were here before us. We are looking forward to planning a new season for the Echo Rangers and will be working with our friends from The Ormond Beach Historical Society and Ormond Memorial Art Museum to plan next year s visits.

We are pleased to see an increasing number of boys participating in the gymnastics program. The Ormond Flames cheer team is currently preparing to enter their first competition next month in Jacksonville. The coaching staff is working diligently with the girls to sharpen their skills for this exciting upcoming event! 3 PAGE 3 Presidential Guests at The Casements The Casements Guild members had a special program this week for Presidents Day. Local historians and re-enactors presented a program with John and Abigail Adams. John Adams was the second president, taking office in He was a conservative Federalist and one of the most influential of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Adams came to prominence in the early stages of the American Revolution. He was a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress and played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence. He assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the United States Declaration of Independence in Abigail Adams was John s wife and the mother of John Quincy Adams who later became the sixth President of the United States. She was the first to have the title of Second Lady of the United States and First Lady of the United States. She is remembered most for the letters she wrote to her husband while he stayed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the Continental Congresses. John frequently sought her advice on many matters and their letters are filled with intellectual discussion on government and politics. The program this week was the second of three programs given by this couple. They were enjoyed by the Guild and several other local residents who filled the gallery and atrium for the one hour presentation. Indian Cultural Society Brings Drama The Indian Cultural Society of Daytona presented a drama at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Monday February 21 st. Mike Patel, the President of the Indian Cultural Society of Daytona, brought in a professional theatre troupe from Mumbai, India, to perform. The drama depicted a humorous look at daily family life in India. The comic talent of the actors was greeted to the warm reception of nearly continuous laughter from the audience.

5 PAGE 5 SONC is Busy! Another busy week was enjoyed this week at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center (SONC). Youth basketball play-off games went down to the wire with a great amount of excitement. The season ended with teams receiving well deserved trophies. This has been one of the most well balanced leagues that we have had in years. All three divisions at SONC have been great! With this week s beautiful weather, the outdoor activity in the park has begun to pick up already, and there are still a few weeks to go before spring! A variety of activities have taken place in the park this week ranging from a Lacrosse Clinic to picnics and playground fun. What a nice week to be out and about at the Center. Effluent Reclaimed Water Possible Service Disruptions Beginning today, effluent reclaimed water customers in the City of Ormond Beach may experience intermittent service disruptions. Service disruptions are anticipated while the City completes necessary repairs to the chlorine contact and effluent equalization tank facilities associated with the on-going Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Project. Upon depletion of the current reuse storage supply, service will be interrupted until such time that repairs are accomplished and appropriate materials curing time has occurred. Repairs are currently nearing completion and we anticipate reuse production and storage will be available and returned to normal operational status on Monday evening February 28. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact the City s Utilities Division at (386)

7 PAGE 7 NOTICE March 1, 2011 Pension Review Workshop has been CANCELLED Fire Hydrant Inspection/ Flow Tests City firefighters will be conducting water flow testing and mechanical inspection of the City s 1,600 fire hydrants beginning in March. These activities are performed annually to assess the condition and flow capabilities of the City s fire hydrants and associated water distribution system. The hydrant flow testing is scheduled to be performed primarily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning on March 1, 2011, and is expected to be completed by June 1, The testing procedure requires firefighters to open hydrant valves and allow water to flow from the hydrant for a few minutes to obtain proper flow readings. According to the Florida Fire Prevention Code: Hydrants shall be clear from growth, vegetation, trash, fences, vehicles or storage of other materials that would obstruct a fire hydrant and hinder or prevent its immediate use by the fire department. This activity may cause tap water in nearby homes and facilities to become temporarily cloudy. In such cases, it is suggested that affected customers let their tap water run for a few minutes until the water appears clear. Should a cloudy water condition continue to persist, the customer is requested to contact the City of Ormond Beach Public Works Department Utilities Division at (386) Weekly Police Stats Calls for Service - 1,190 Arrests 16 Citations Issued Reports Written Traffic Stops Weekly Fire Operations Stats 121 INCIDENTS 73 - EMS 11 - Motor Vehicle Accidents 6 - Fires 3 - Fire Alarms 26 - Public Assists 2 - Hazardous
