PAGE 2 National Crime Prevention Month In 2008, the National Crime Prevention Council, in partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the National Sheriffs Association, developed Celebrate Safe Communities as a way to promote the need for local communities to be involved in crime prevention. This year s weekly themes are: Get Alerts, Stay Alive: Emergency Preparedness - An emergency or a natural disaster can happen anywhere anytime! Staying informed, alert, and connected helps us be prepared to respond where we live, work, go to school, or have fun. Raise Your Voice to Stop Hate - Hate divides communities and can lead to crime and violence. According to the FBI, in 2012, 1,730 law enforcement agencies reported 5,796 hate crime incidents involving 6,718 offenses. Students, parents, businesses, law enforcement, and community members play a role in preventing hate crimes and building safe communities for all. Prevent Financial Fraud: Before You Invest, Ask and Check - Each year, nearly 30.2 million US consumers are defrauded, losing a total of nearly $3 billion. Learn about risk factors and how to identify red flags through the FINRA Foundation s consumer strategy, Ask and Check. Get Real About Intellectual Property Theft - A thief can copy someone else s ideas/ products and reap huge profits. Intellectual property theft can cost jobs, damage business reputations, cause sickness and bodily harm, deprive governments of tax revenue, and even result in the spread of organized crime and gangs. Intellectual theft is not a victimless crime! Visit the National Crime Prevention Council website, for more info. Fire Prevention Week Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire which occurred in 1871 killing more than 250 people, leaving 100,000 homeless, destroying more than 17,400 structures and burning more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, Therefore, Fire Prevention Week is held on that week in October which has October 9th. Make sure you have working smoke alarms and check them on a regular basis. They save lives! For more information on Fire Prevention Week, you can visit the following websites: or

PAGE 3 Officer Lloyd Cornelius Retires Officer Lloyd Cornelius of the Ormond Beach Police Department recently retired after 20 years of dedicated service to the City and its citizens. At his retirement send off, Chief Osterkamp presented Officer Cornelius with a certificate thanking him for his years of service and a presentation plaque that included his badge and shoulder patch. Officer Cornelius joined the Police Department in September During his career he worked in various areas of law enforcement, starting out in the Patrol Division where he worked for eight years. This was followed by his becoming a field training officer and police instructor. He also received training on gang investigations. Officer Cornelius was then assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as a detective and spent four years investigating a variety of crimes. His main area of investigation was financial crimes. Following this, Officer Cornelius was assigned to teach D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and crime prevention techniques. Officer Cornelius has touched many lives through his presentations at our public and private schools teaching fifth grade students about Drug Abuse Resistance Education. He was also a well known figure at many of our Citizen Police Academies and at the popular National Night Out events. We wish Officer Cornelius a happy and healthy retirement!

PAGE 4 Echo Ranger Program A group of excited and curious children visited The Casements on Saturday, September 27. The home was a stop on their Echo Rangers passport to history, exploring the ecological, cultural, heritage and outdoor offerings in the Volusia County area. All the rangers were accompanied by their parents and siblings. Docent Nancy Sheil was on hand to guide the group through The Casements, relating the rich history of the home, as well as John D. Rockefeller s time in Ormond Beach as our famous resident. Following the tour, the rangers created a commemorative frame with a personal photo of their visit to take home. Judgeship Investiture Ceremony The Judgeship Investiture Ceremony was held on Friday, September 26 th in the Performing Arts Center where the Honorable Charles D. (David) Hood was officially installed to serve in the 7 th Judicial Circuit Court. Mr. Hood has previously served as an Ormond Beach City Commissioner, Mayor of Ormond Beach, and as a member of the Florida State Legislature. In attendance for the ceremony were many of Mr. Hood s colleagues on the Circuit Court bench, elected leaders, as well as his family members and friends in the community.

PAGE 5 In addition, we added a new elliptical machine that will offer a smooth workout for the entire body. The room has been rearranged so those walking on the treadmill and riding the exercise bike can look out onto the park. The exercise room is open 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Membership is free to all Ormond Beach residents. A year membership is available for non-residents for a fee. For more information, call the Nova Community Center at (386) Exercise Room Gets a Facelift The exercise room at the Nova Community Center got a facelift this week with the installation of a new rubber flooring. The new flooring provides a clean look and a softer surface which ensures additional safety and the reduction in the chance of joint pain to our exercise enthusiasts. BeatleBeat Tribute BeatleBeat, a live musical salute to the music of the Beatles, was performed at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 27 th. This four piece band of highly skilled musicians played Beatles songs from the period when the Beatles first toured the United States from 1964 through The BeatleBeat show is a tribute to the energy and excitement of the Beatles live performances. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles arrival in the U.S. and their debut appearance on the Ed Sullivan television show, special guest tribute artist George Trullinger performed his impeccable impersonation of Ed Sullivan. It was a memorable concert that the audience immensely enjoyed. The enthusiastic crowd gave multiple standing ovations to the performers and called them back for an encore.

PAGE 6 Parks Maintenance Parks Maintenance staff continued trimming overgrowth around the fishing pier and along walking trails in Central Park III. In addition, approximately 15,000 sf of sidewalk was pressure cleaned in Central Park I. Recently, new memorial benches were installed on Cassen Park s fishing pier. The recent storms created much debris in our parks and staff was kept busy cleaning up that debris citywide. Other tasks staff must focus on, unfortunately, are graffiti removal from our parks and park restrooms as well as removal of litter and debris left behind in our parks. Weekly Police Stats Calls for Service - 1,893 Arrests 24 Citations Issued - 61 Reports Written Traffic Stops Weekly Fire Operations Stats 152 INCIDENTS 88 - EMS 9 - Motor Vehicle Accidents 2 - Fires 13 - Fire Alarms 36 - Public Assists 4 - Hazardous

PAGE 8 QUEENS OF COUNTRY MUSIC The Queens of Country Music, a tribute to Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette, starring Lorri Gill and The Notebenders Band is coming to the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, October 12 th, at 2:00 p.m. Each of these women is a musical powerhouse who took their unique styles to the top of the charts and paved the way for female vocalists to follow in their footsteps to stardom. Patsy Cline is probably the most popular, says Gill, she has the most mystique of the three ladies because of the great music she created and because of her tragic death at an early age. Patsy Cline s music still has great appeal and millions of Patsy Cline albums are sold each year. The Queens of Country tribute will feature stories and songs from Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette. With the costumes and vocals, Gill is convincing in her performance of these legends. Lorri Gill and The Notebenders Band perform regularly at venues throughout Central Florida. Reserved seat tickets for the show are on sale now for $15. Tickets are available online at the City of Ormond Beach website or at the Performing Arts Center box office, located at 399 N. US Highway 1. The box office is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., and two hours prior to every show. For more information, please call the Box Office at
