US1. A few of the Enviro-Tips videos will be shown at the premier and all will be placed on the City s Green Ormond Beach webpage for all children (and adults too) to enjoy and learn how to live green in Ormond Beach. There are a total of twenty videos of 2-3 minutes each consisting of Organic Gardening, Composting, Oceans and Seas, and Solar Power just to name a few. This event is FREE and we invite you to join us for the launch, premier and to meet our very special guest, Rae Rae the Red Panda, and to enjoy environmentally friendly refreshments. This project has been completely funded by the US Department of Energy as part of the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant Program. 2 PAGE 2 FPL Tree Trimming Florida Power and Light (FPL) will be performing routine tree trimming maintenance along rightsof-way on the mainland within the City of Ormond Beach beginning in mid-september. Please meet at the front door of The Casements facing Rockefeller Gardens. The entire walk will be approximately 2 miles. 3 PAGE 3 Nova Community Center New Hours The Nova Community Center offers a wide variety of fitness and wellness activities for the whole family to enjoy. The Center offers open basketball courts, 2 open Pickleball courts, a game room with pool tables, foosball and table tennis and a complete fitness room with nautilus equipment, treadmills, stationary bikes and a rock climbing/tread wall. Use of the Center is free to City of Ormond Beach residents with proof of residency and just $3.75/day for non-residents. The Center, located at 440 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, please call us at (386) Just Twistin Hay Enjoy some merry mischief with the Just Twistin Hay Irish Folk music group on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center. The six member Irish-Celtic folk band from Central Florida will bring the culture of the Emerald Isle to Ormond Beach in a 90- minute family-friendly show beginning at 7:00 p.m. Fiddle music originated in the folk tradition of the British Isles, France, Ireland and Scotland so when band member and classically trained musician Linda Clipp chose to study the fiddle, she learned the technique native to the Celtic Region of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Fiddling along with Linda is a Florida state fiddle champion Sharon Hartmann. Linda s musically talented husband Dave plays mandolin, bouzouki, bass guitar, banjo, recorder, harmonica and vocals. Her son, Jacob Butler, keeps the beat on the bodhran (Irish hand drum) and spoons, plays banjo and sings in the group. Rounding out the sound are Nicole Chism on flute, whistle and vocals and Lee Simpson on guitar and vocals. Joining Just Twistin Hay onstage will be the Inisheer Irish Dancers whose performances present a unique experience for audiences. This popular dance troupe from the Gainesville area will perform the playful and expressive Sean Nos (old style) Irish Dance, as well as, Nua Nos (new style) Irish Dance that includes modern step dancing and Ceili dance. Just Twistin Hay is Irish slang for creating merry mischief with no harm done and the group is sure to be having some fun with the audience who will be tapping their toes to the lively music. Reserved seat tickets are on sale for $10 at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center Box Office. The Box Office is located at 399 N. 4 PAGE 4 Fall Programs for Special Populations at Nova Community Center The Nova Community Center, Special Populations Division, offers fall sessions for the special needs community to enjoy. Challenger Soccer is a soccer program for children and adults with special needs ages 10 and older. The six week session teaches soccer skills and ends with a game between the players. Practices are held on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The first practice is September 11, Challenger Sports of All Sorts is an introductory sports program for children with special needs ages Each week focuses on the basic skills of a different sport. This program will meet Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The first day is September 12, The cost for either program is $23.00 for residents (proof of residency required) and $35.00 for non-residents. Moving Rating: Yogi Bear is a PG rated movie and parents are urged to use parental guidance as the motion picture may contain some material parents might not like for their younger children to view. Meeting with the Manager Meeting with the Manager will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. in the Training Room at City Hall, 22 South Beach Street. The Training Room is located on the 1 st floor. Entry to the Training Room is in the breezeway between City Hall and the Library. Everyone is invited to attend these informal sessions to express their ideas, comments, and suggestions.

5 PAGE 5 Movies on the Halifax Celebrates 3 Years! The Movies on the Halifax free outdoor movie program celebrates its third year today! The movies have a been a popular family night out for residents and visitors alike. The program is sponsored by the Department of Leisure Services and The Casements Guild. Classic and first run movies are chosen by The Casements staff each month depending on the time of year and upcoming holiday. Moviegoers can also cast a vote for a particular movie by filling out a survey on movie night. Several area businesses have sponsored the movies by donating funds to offset the cost of the licensing, providing special treats tied to the movie theme, or providing fun props for the moviegoers. We appreciate all the support from our sponsors and avid movie fans and look forward to another great year of movies! City Clerk Welcome Reception Scott McKee began his position as the City Clerk of Ormond Beach on Tuesday, September 4, A welcome reception with punch and cake was held prior to the City Commission meeting. Mr. McKee has worked in the City Attorney s office since April 2009 as a Paralegal. In May 2010, Scott was admitted to the Florida Bar. He earned his Juris Doctor from Barry University Andreas School of Law in Orlando and also has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Florida Southern College. Prior to his employment with the City of Ormond Beach, Scott was employed by the City of Deltona as Economic Development and Grant Coordinator. Congratulations Scott!

6 PAGE 6 Pop Warner Football Jamboree On Saturday, August 25th, the Pop Warner Football program held their annual Jamboree at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Six divisions played against North Brevard in this day long series of games. This marked the beginning of their football season. Their first home game will be played on September 15th at the Sports Complex. Pop Warner cheerleading squads also took to the fields to cheer on their teams. It s Flag Football Season Once Again! This week, the fields at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex were finally dry enough after the recent rain to begin the City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Fall Youth Flag Football League practices. Registration took place August 1st through 24th for boys and girls ages 7 through 14 years old. The teams will play two games per week starting September 24th and continue through November 16th, Monday through Friday at 5:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This year, there will be a total of 16 teams playing throughout the season. The Flag Football program is coordinated through the City s Athletics Division.

7 PAGE 7 City Manager Work Day On Thursday, August 30, 2012, City Manager Joyce Shanahan spent the afternoon with the Finance/Utility Billing Department and Building/Permitting Division to learn their day-to-day processes. Joyce first spent time with the Building/Permitting Division working the front counter with Cindy Berglund, Permit Manager. They greeted customers as they came in and stuffed envelopes with renewed business tax receipts. During the afternoon, a large FedEx package was delivered containing plans that needed to be routed to the Plans Examiner. They also discussed the processes in place for the office. Joyce assisted with the issuance of a driveway replacement permit to a homeowner during the permit happy hour. She asked about the day-to-day operations, and gave great feedback on how well received the permit counter has been. While in the Finance Department, she worked with Darlene Messina, Accounting Clerk II, at the front desk. She observed how phone calls were handled and walk-in customers were helped with establishing new service, processing utility payments, including payments for disconnected accounts, adjustments for the sewer portion of utility bills, processing work orders, and foreclosure registrations. Joyce then spent time with Rob Hart, Accounting Technician. She was shown how storm water drainage charges were calculated, garbage service set up and rates and deposits adjusted on newly annexed properties. She also observed a phone call where service set up was refused for someone who lacked proper documentation of ownership of the property.
