PAGE 4 V{Ü áàåtá ZtÄt It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Ormond Beach! Notably, lanterns, plaid, bows, and burlap abound at John D. Rockefeller s former winter home. On December 1 through December 3, The Casements Guild presented the 39th Annual Christmas Gala at The Casements. The 2017 theme, The Casements Country Christmas, focused on the warm and inviting environment Neighbor John wanted his home to exemplify. On Friday night, hundreds of guests were welcomed to the annual house lighting ceremony at 6 pm. In addition, the City of Ormond Beach and The Casements Guild presented the inaugural Rockefeller Gardens Tree Lighting Ceremony and holiday festivities. A brand new 36-foot tall Christmas tree in the center garden was the star of the show. Moonlight Combo provided live music around the tree while families enjoyed the activity booths in the gardens. Children wrote letters to Santa, decorated cookies with local Girl Scouts, had their faces painted, and sipped on free hot chocolate. Meanwhile on the stage, families met Mr. & Mrs. Claus and snapped wonderful holiday pictures. On the north garden, Hershey s Ice Cream provided ice cream sundaes for $3. Guests also hopped aboard free train rides around the park! Inside The Casements mansion, guests enjoyed decorations on two stories as well as numerous shopping opportunities. The Akam s Magic Forest, located in the first floor dance room, featured fifteen Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and organizations. In the first floor s sunporch area, The Casements Corner Gift Shoppe sold various Christmas decorations and presents. The second floor featured a handmade crafts room, a Treasure Trove with unique items, and the Gourmet Shoppe s edible treats. On Saturday evening, The Casements Guild hosted a special event, Wine and More with the Marian DeVore Trio, from 6 pm to 8 pm. On Sunday afternoon, The Casements Guild hosted an Afternoon Holiday Tea with seatings at 12:30 pm and 3 pm. Both events required advanced reservations. The Casements Country Christmas was held on Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm, on Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm, and on Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm. Admission was a $5 donation per person over age 12, and tickets were valid for all three days. The house will remain decorated until the New Year. On December 14, the house will be open to the public from 6 pm to 8 pm for Holidays at The Casements. Photos on next page

PAGE 7 At 8:00 a.m., Manager Shanahan greeted the walkers and after a brief introduction, the walkers got on their way. As they walked the area, they discussed a variety of topics. Once the two mile walk was completed, the walkers met back at The Casements for cool water to refresh them before they went on their way for the day. It s Basketball Season! City Manager Walk On Friday, December 1, City Manager Joyce Shanahan held her Walk with the Manager at The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive. Basketball season has begun at the Nova Community Center. Challenger Basketball meets on Tuesdays from 5:00pm-6:00pm. This is a team that helps children with disabilities play basketball at their own speed and ability level with accommodations so that they can succeed. The kids get to be a part of a team like all other children. Ormond Beach Youth Basketball has also begun their practices at the Nova Community Center and meets at the Center Monday through Saturday at assigned times. In addition, they practice at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center Monday, Wednesday and Friday at designated times. Their games will begin next week and will continue through February.
PAGE 8 Nature Watercolor Painting On Wednesday, November 29, artist Holly Esch led a group of 19 participants in a program to learn about impressionism and its influence on nature painting. Holly covered watercolor painting techniques including blending, mixing colors, highlighting, shading, and use of different brushstrokes. Participants were then able to put these techniques into practice by creating their own paintings of nature scenes found at the EDC and within Central Park. At the conclusion Holly agreed that many of the paintings were quite impressive! Thank you Holly for leading this fun, informative and creative program at the Environmental Discovery Center! Florida First Protector Invasive Species Program On Saturday December 2, Sage Thompson, Morgan Pinkerton and Eleanor Phillips from the University of Florida s Department of Entomology and Nematology presented an extremely informative program on issues surrounding invasive species of insects and plants here in Florida. Our very engaged participants learned about detection, biological interventions, eradication techniques and quarantine methods being used to deal with the ever increasing number of invasive species coming into our country. The speakers also highlighted successes in controlling invasive species like the African land snail in south Florida. In addition, they discussed continuing challenges like citrus greening disease. The participants had an opportunity to view live insects, some by using microscopes and others without the need for magnification. Thank you to Sage, Morgan and Eleanor for an outstanding presentation!
PAGE 9 Irish Dance Christmas Spectacular Carol of the King, the Irish Dance Christmas Spectacular, was performed on Tuesday, December 5, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center. This internationally touring attraction stars Justin Boros, the former lead dancer of Michael Flatley s Lord of the Dance. The New York City based Irish dance troupe tells a Christmas story entirely through Irish step dancing with a lively soundtrack of authentic Irish Christmas music. The near capacity crowd was delighted by the Broadway-style production. At the finale, the audience was on its feet cheering and applauding for the amazing performance. CMT Presents Annie Jr. & North Pole Musical Children s Musical Theatre Workshop presented Annie Jr. and North Pole Musical at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 1, Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3. Broadway musical Annie Jr. The elementary grade school students performed in North Pole Musical, a holiday-themed show featuring familiar songs of the season. The middle and high school students performed in the beloved Children s Musical Theatre Workshop, under the direction of Cindy Simmons, has been teaching performing arts to children in Ormond Beach for more than thirty-five years. The performances were well attended, and the audiences enjoyed seeing the children perform.
PAGE 10 PARKS This week, the Leisure Services Parks staff assisted Building Maintenance with the setup of the 36-foot Christmas tree in Rockefeller Gardens. At Riviera Park, two new engraved park benches were installed. Staff installed orange safety fencing around three light towers at the Sports Complex. At Sanchez Park, a soap dispenser was repaired in the ladies restroom and twelve broken post caps were repaired on the top of the playground fence. As usual, citywide safety inspections were performed of all parks and equipment and weekly inspections were done of parks facilities for reservations. All park reservations were posted at various facilities.
