Earlier this year, the Ormond Beach Police Athletic League (OBPAL) Bruins 7 th Grade team finished first place in a USSSA national sanctioned qualifying event and earned a bid to compete in the national event. They also competed in the Florida s USSSA State Championship in Ft. Myers, Florida, two weeks before attending the Nationals, finishing in twelfth place overall out of 36 teams. After the State Championship, the team knew they had to work hard to prepare for the Nationals. There was no time to relax as many of the boys made their way to the gym, working hard to improve their skills. The work paid off tremendously for the Bruins team during the National Tournament. On the first day of the tournament, the Bruins played against the Flagler Fury out of Palm Coast, Florida, and with bragging rights on the line, the Bruins lost 62 to 56. Kevon McCrary (#45) and Kevin Beans (#32) led the team in scoring, both with 15 points. During the second day, the OBPAL team played against the Georgiana Generals of Georgia, and won 71 to 55. Kevin Beans scored 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead all scores for the Bruins. Jahari Dorival (#2) came off the bench early to give the team a seven point spark. Kevon McCrary led the team with 13 points and 15 rebounds, unfortunately, several missed free throws in the final minutes of the game contributed to the loss.

The Bruins played against GOD s Property Thunder of Georgia and won 52 to 50.

The Bruins also played against the number three team in the nation, the South Florida Kings of Miami, FL, and lost 46 to 38. Kevon McCrary led the team with 13 points and 15 rebounds, unfortunately, several missed free throws in the final minutes of the game contributed to the loss. The Bruins finished 1-2 in pool play and were placed into the Division 2 bracket play. Bracket play began on the third tournament day. The Bruins played against GOD s Property Thunder of Georgia and won 52 to 50. DeAndre McMillian, Troy Reeves (#31), and Avery Jamal Randolph (#20) contributed defensively to help slow down the Thunder s offense. With this win in bracket play, they advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday. On Championship Sunday, the Bruins played against the North Point Youth of Palatka, Florida, and won 65 to 42. At one point during this game, the Bruins were up by 30 points! Kevin Beans led the team with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Kevon McCrary contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds for the victory. The team advanced to the championship game. The Bruins faced the Skillset Vipers of Georgia in the championship game and won the 2014 USSSA Division 2 National Championship defeating the Vipers 65 to 64. Kevin Beans finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds to contribute to the win, Kevon McCrary had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Rodney Rhoden also scored in double figures and with :07 seconds left in the game, Rodney dribbled the entire length of the court and scored the game winning shot with no time left on the clock. Kevin Beans received the Most Valuable Player Award, Kevon McCrary and Rodney Rhoden received All Tournament Team votes from various coaches. Awards will be presented to them at a later date. After the tournament, OBPAL Athletic Specialist and Bruins team coach Avery Randolph said, Our kids worked hard all year for this, they put in numerous hours of practicing and learning the game. These kids were able to manage extra curricular activities at school, chores at home and most important their grades to participate. Congratulations Bruins! Enviro Camp Summer camp has begun at The Casements! The morning of Monday, July 7th, saw the arrival of 30 happy and eager children ready to start their first week of Enviro Camp. Our three capable and creative counselors greeted the campers with fun and educational activities before the arrival of our guest speaker. Eric Burris of WESH-2 News talked to the children about weather and being a meteorologist. His entertaining and interactive presentation was a treat for the first day of learning about weather. Another guest speaker this week was Mary Wetzel of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse who spoke to the campers about living in a lighthouse. Enviro Camp continues until August 1st. 3 PAGE 3 Independence Day Celebration The City of Ormond Beach s Independence Day Celebration 2014 was once again a great success! The largest community event of the year, it takes months of preparation to create a celebration that is enjoyed by thousands and has become an annual tradition for citizens in our community. Even though we had some rain this year, it didn t stop folks from having a great time celebrating our nation s birthday. The event ran from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and offered live music, plenty of food and treats, a Patriotic Kids Park, and one of the area s finest fireworks displays on the Halifax River. Deputy Mayor Bill Partington addressed the crowd in Rockefeller Gardens and read a proclamation, followed by fellow City Commission members and their families leading the fireworks countdown as they pressed the TNT plunger. Patriotic music filled the air while fireworks lit up the sky for more than 20 minutes to the delight and amazement of the crowd, which stretched along Beach Street, in front of City Hall, the Granada Bridge, Fortunato Park, Rockefeller Gardens and surrounding areas. Jim Miller s Big Band America Summer Concert Jim Miller s Big Band America performed a summer concert at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, June 29th. The show was devoted to big band jazz classics and included Satin Doll, the signature closing tune of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Old Man River, a number one song for crooner Bing Crosby. Big Band America concluded the concert with a salute to our U.S. military veterans and played the anthems of all the service branches. It was a fitting tribute to all who served and an excellent finale for the show.

PAGE 4 ADULT COED SOFTBALL LEAGUE The City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department is offering its 22 nd Annual Adult Coed Softball League.

The league will be divided into two or three divisions based on the number of teams and the diverse levels of play. Each team will play a minimum of 16 games.

Fees need to be in by Tuesday, August 5 th to ensure your team has a spot in the league.

4 PAGE 4 ADULT COED SOFTBALL LEAGUE The City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department is offering its 22 nd Annual Adult Coed Softball League. The season will run from August 11 th to approximately November 6 th. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. The league will be divided into two or three divisions based on the number of teams and the diverse levels of play. Each team will play a minimum of 16 games. Games are played Monday through Thursday at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, 700 Hull Road, off North US1. Game softballs and team awards will be provided. The team sponsorship fee is $555. Fees need to be in by Tuesday, August 5 th to ensure your team has a spot in the league. All individuals wishing to be on a team should Gerry Pitchford, Athletic Supervisor, at pitchford@ormondbeach.org or by calling him at Camp T-Rec Adventure Begins! Camp T-Rec began on June 23rd and meets from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Nova Community Center. This year, 23 campers are registered for the first session. Each day, the children take part in various camp activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games and swimming at the YMCA. Camp T-Rec started with Superhero Week, with special guests Dr. Becky Bruno from Lombardo Chiropractic and Ormond Beach Firefighter Patrick Soard who taught the campers how to take care of themselves and what to do in an emergency, so they could be superheroes. They tested their superhero skills with the Superhero Obstacle Course and saved the day. The second week brought more adventures with a "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" theme. The camp headed to the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport to tour the Civil Air Patrol Hangar and an airplane used on missions. They ended the trip at the limitless playground. The week ended with an annual Camp T-Rec tradition, the cake decorating contest. The campers got to test their creativity by designing a train made out of cake. With four more weeks of camp, the children are looking forward to having more adventures!

5 PAGE 5 CMT Camp Presents The Music Man, Jr. Children s Musical Theatre Workshop conducts a three week long Musical Theatre Camp program annually in July at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center (PAC). The camp is for children from kindergarten age through high school. The camp experience includes instruction in voice, dance, acting, and stagecraft. This year, the camp program will culminate with the entire camp holding a public performance of The Music Man, Jr. at the PAC on Thursday, July 24 th, at 7:00 p.m. The long running and beloved Broadway musical features such songs as (Ya Got) Trouble, Seventy Six Trombones, and Goodnight Ladies. Tickets for The Music Man, Jr. will be available at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center box office on the day of the show for $8. Rockefeller s Birthday Celebration On Tuesday, July 8th, The Casements recognized the 175th birthday of Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Sr. A banner, decorated by the Enviro campers, was hung inviting the public to beep for his birthday. Siobhan Daly, The Casements Coordinator, baked mini-cupcakes for all the campers to join in on the celebration. One of Mr. Rockefeller s goals in life was to live to be 100. He died at The Casements just two months shy of his 98th birthday.

7 PAGE 7 THE LOST CONCERT ELVIS PRESLEY AND ROY ORBISON The Lost Concert, a tribute to Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison starring Peter Alden (Elvis), and Brian McCollough (Roy Orbison), will be performed on Sunday, July 13 th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center (PAC). Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison were friends in life and planned to perform together in concert. Although the opportunity for these two iconic singers to perform together in concert never came, the stage is now set for two great tribute artists to perform their hits together in The Lost Concert. Peter Alden is both a classically trained opera singer and stage actor who spent many years perfecting his tribute to Elvis. Alden and his good friend Brian McCollough, who performs as Roy Orbison, created an original show that featured both Elvis and Roy on stage together. The Lost Concert had a very successful run of six months in Nashville. Both Alden and McCollough performed for many years with Legends in Concert. Hosting the show is Ken Brady of The Casinos. Ken will perform The Casinos hit Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye and others. Special guests are The Dukes, a popular duo known for keeping the oldies alive. Also appearing as a special guest is Elvis tribute performer Cote Deonath, a young rising star who is a sensation on social media. Tickets for the show are on sale now for $25 VIP reserved seating in the center section, and $20 general reserved seating. 8 PAGE 8 Ormond Beach Korean War Veterans to be Honored The City of Ormond Beach will be honoring Korean War veterans who currently reside within the City limits at an upcoming ceremony. Please RSVP before July 18 th to the Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department at This will be your last opportunity to RSVP for the ceremony and to have your name placed on a commemorative plaque. When responding, we will need you to provide your full name, street address and telephone number, and you must currently reside within the city limits of Ormond Beach. PARKS Making sure everything was in order for the Independence Day celebration was one of the priorities for the Leisure Services Department Parks Maintenance staff last week. They assembled and launched the river floats for the fireworks celebration and assisted with the installation of the holiday banner. Preparations were made in anticipation of the busy holiday weekend at all of our parks. At Andy Romano Beachfront Park, staff repaired a BBQ grill, a janitorial room door, and poured a place mat. Staff also relocated the lightning detector, and a new button was installed for the splash pad. Staff trimmed the scrub growth along Beach Street for better visibility. Broken glass was cleaned from the restroom at Sanchez Park. Graffiti was removed from a picnic table at Riviera Park and from the Magic Forest. In the Carriage House at The Casements, a new water heater was installed.
