Are you getting too big to be little and too little to be big? Every business needs capital, equipment, tools, and good skilled labor. Where do you find good help? We all need new, young employees trained to use their hands and who are responsible employees. Todd s Mudjacking Services is working on setting up a training program with their local high school to train students in each and every position. Other businesses have set up programs with local colleges too. Chuck has had a health scare and reminded us that taking care of our health is an important issue too! 2 WIBA Board President s Letter WIBA Board Meeting Highlights Dear WIBA Members, There s a chill in the air but we re all still building this community up! Gina Martin, Farmer s Insurance Agency will be speaking at our next WIBA Membership Meeting. Let s all find out what she would like to tell us about her business. Gina joined in February and you should come and meet her if you haven t already. 70 Members Welcome New Members; McConnell Plumbing & Heating! Thank you Chuck Heady from Todd s Mudjacking services for speaking at our October 18th WIBA membership Meeting. WIBA Christmas Party Committee meets after the WIBA Membership Meeting on November 15th.. We have lots of plans in place for the WIBA Christmas Party. 5 Hitting a Wall Trying to grow your company? Are you struggling to keep up with what is getting done? A familiar problem for remodelers is that feeling of hitting a wall when you reach a certain level of projects. It s difficult to keep up with the work and try to grow your business at the same time. The current way of doing business and the resources set up might not be enough anymore to support growing the company. You may have grown more than you planned. Your staff has helped to get you to where you are but you want to grow. Do you need more staff? Will you have the work to continue to support that staff? Do you need another vehicle? Do you need upgrades in your business systems, advertising, etc.? Identifying when your staff will reach their capacity can help you get your company ready before you hit the wall or help make the decision to not try to grow your business and settle into your niche that is satisfying for your company and for yourself. Growing a company takes information and planning. Knowledge is Power, if you do something with it. Changing can help you profitably break through that wall. What can you change to help your business be more successful? What resources do you need? What could help make your office work run smoother? Just because you have always done it a certain way doesn't mean you can t change if it will help your business be more efficient or grow. Is your gross margin covering your overhead and profit requirements? Positive feedback and constructive criticism is rewarding for workers. A good program for customers to provide comments helps improve relationships with customers but also changes the makeup of the whole business. Happy employees are the first step to happy customers. Focusing on the customers makes your business accountable and responsible. Everyone needs to know their role. Happier customers makes happy employees. Recognizing when promises aren't kept and celebrating successes with compensation, recognition and promotion are all an major part of team attention and investment. Better performance brings customer referrals and the most effective marketing program for your company. Focusing on the customer fosters great relationships which makes you feel great about yourselves, your company, and your contribution to the community. It has been estimated that 15 to 20% is the average referral rate for home builders. With a customer centered culture, builders can achieve 40 to 50%. It can be the difference between getting by and succeeding. Satisfaction brings Sustainability. At new employee orientation at Walt Disney World, they learn every day may just be another day at work for them but it s different for visitors. This may be their only time to ever visit. They may have saved for years and years to accomplish this goal. It s up to the workers to make it memorable and special. For many new buyers, this may be the only or last new home they will ever build or buy. They may have saved for years and years to accomplish this goal. It s not just another day at work for you, its your chance to build this home and make it a memorable, positive experience. After all, your customer has family, friends, and a myriad of people they talk to. Referrals can help make your business grow. Being focused on the customer can keep us focused, honest, and on track. It helps us look at the whole experience for a buyer when everyday challenges of running a business make us forget that were lucky enough to run our own Magic Kingdom. It can make their home building experience a happy beginning to the memories they will create in their new home. Page 5
