President s Message State of the Chapter It is my pleasure to report on the health of the Water Wonderland Chapter for the year Our membership remains stable at around 300. Communication with our members has been improved with a method of sending blast for quick reminders about chapter activities. We publish three newsletters during the year and a picture yearbook at the end of the season showing all of the chapters events. The chapter website has a calendar of events and other areas of interest to members and non-members. The board is considering adding a ships store to the site. This year was the 25 th anniversary of the chapter making a very busy, but special year for us. In January the board held an all day planning session. This meeting gives all board members the opportunity to give input in the planning of the chapter events for the year. Quarterly board meetings are held throughout the year at Cadillac, Michigan. In February we had our display in the Grand Rapids Boat Show with 13 boats and a Chris- Craft camper on display. The Great Lakes Boat Building School had a student built boat on display along with our collection. We also built 6 Aristo Craft Jr. boats with our youth program at this show. In March we held a Symposium at Maritime Classics restoration shop owned by Mike Green. This session was attended by 22 chapter members and one guest. Mike covered a lot of information and future hands on symposiums are in the planning stages. The annual President s tour was held in April at the Morin Boat Shop in Bay City. Doug Morin hosted the event giving us a close up look at many special boats and engines that were there at the time. It was an extremely informative afternoon for all who attended. May brought us spring flowers and the non-powered rendezvous at Ken Kelly s special hide away at Twin Lakes. The flowers were in bloom and the Loon was on her nest. 3

She has since been seen with two chicks. July came with warmer weather and a great day for boating on Gull Lake after a wonderful lunch at the Yacht Club. In August we had even warmer weather for our annual Boats on the Boardwalk show in downtown Traverse City, Michigan. We had several feature boats that belong to our charter members. One of these boats has been owned and used for the last 25 years, but never shown in the show. The youth boats built in February were also displayed be their proud owners. What a fantastic job these children did in personalizing THEIR boats. The members of the Wooden Canoe and Heritage Association had an impressive display of canoes at the show. The following week we held the chapters annual picnic and poker run with the Les Cheneaux Island show in Hessel, Michigan. The chapter supported a number of other shows throughout the state including: South Haven Classic Boat show, Presque Isle Wooden show, Bay Harbor Vintage Festival, South Arm Classics, Cruising for the Cure, White Lake boat show, Les Cheneaux Island show, Pentwater and Holland boat shows, and the Century boat show. We also had many members attend the annual meeting and boat show at Table Rock Lake, Mo. The final event of the year was our fall dinner and annual meeting. It was held at the top of the Park Place in Traverse City. Eight of the charter members were in attendance as our guests. This chapter is privileged to have several members serve at the international level. This includes: Past President-Jim Mersman, Director-Kirk Smith, Director at large-thomas Holmes, and Web Site Administrator-Wendy Mersman Philip Engelsman, President Water Wonderland Chapter, The Antique & Classic Boat Society, Inc 4

Grand Rapids Boat Show and Youth Project The Grand Rapids Boat Show in February was a great success with 13 boats on display and one camper. A big part of the show was the Youth Project. Six Aristo Craft Jr. boats were built by families and Boy Scout groups. The boats were taken home for completion and the finished project was displayed at Boats on the Boardwalk in August. 5

The Youth Project kicked-off at the Grand Rapids Boat Show with the finished project displayed at the Boats on the Boardwalk. Many thanks to all involved, Phil Engelsman, Krik Smith, Mike Tuesink, the Great Lakes Boat Building School, Bill Turner from Aristocraft Boat Company and all those that participated in the event. Anyone wanting to build a youth boat at the Grand Rapids Boat Show, contact Phil Englesman, Mike Teusink, or Kirk Smith 6

Symposium Traverse City In March, the Water Wonderland Chapter held a symposium at Maritime Classics Restoration Shop owned by Mike Green in Traverse City. The session included a visit to the Maritime Heritage Alliance in Traverse City. The discussion covered evaluating a boat for purchase all the way through the process to remove and replace planking. 7

President s Tour of Morin Boat Shop Bay City In April, the President s Tour was held in Bay City at the Morin Boat Shop. The tour of the boat shop included many special boats and engines that made the day both informative and entertaining. 8

Non Powered Rendezvous at Ken Kelly s Ken Kelly again hosted a great day in May for the Non-Powered Rendezvous. 18 members enjoyed the day at Twin Lakes, MI, experiencing a fun day on the water in wooden canoes, kayaks and even a wooden stand-up paddleboard. Cruising for the Cure Torch Lake MI Hagerty picnic at the sand bar. 9

Gull Lake Rendezvous With the very warm weather of July, Gull Lake was a great place to spend the day on the water and a wonderful lunch at the Yacht Club made it a very special day. 10

Boats on the Boardwalk Traverse City, MI Boats on the Boardwalk was a very special show with a number of featured boats by charter members of the Chapter. In addition, an invitation was extended to the Wooden Canoe and Heritage Association to display their impressive canoes. The Youth Project that began in February resulted in a display of personalized finished boats by the children that participated in the project. 11
