3 President s Message I mostly have pleasant memories of my year as President. Starting with the Grand Rapids Boat Show, working alongside of our friends at ShowSpan, who are always very nice to work with. Ken and Mary Kelly s is always fun, especially if you have not been there; on second thought, even if you have been to their lake, it is always an enjoyable time. Carol and I bumped in to the Spring Lake Boat Show. What a great smaller show with some fine examples of our goods. Some will be coming to the boat show downtown in February. This is the time on June 9th that I was attacked by my gall bladder Kenn 0, Gall Bladder 1. Another show I missed, but look forward to attending in the future, was the Cruising for a Cure at Torch Lake. Boats on the Boardwalk was not very heavily attended. Those who did come brought their best. Our picnic at the Pomeroy s (and thanks again, Mort, for allowing us to meet at your home) was wet and cold. It did, however, get us ready for the show at Hessel the next day. As usual, absolutely stunning examples at that show. I was not able to attend the Coeur d Alene meeting. William Drey, II went in my place. We had a nice day for boating on the dam late September. We should do that again next year. I will try to remember to bring more gas with me. Our season ended with a nice meal at Maxfield s where I was honored to hand over the gavel to Mike Tuesink, our new president. I thank all of you for your support of my tenure as your leader for this past year. Sincerely, Kenn Spencer 3
4 Grand Rapids Boat Show Kenn Spencer once again did a great job organizing the boats for the Grand Rapids Boat Show in February. Ken and Kelly hosted the non-powered rendezvous on the Twin Lakes. A great kick off to our boating season and the many events our members can participant in during the season. Non-Powered Rendezvous 4

11 Fall River Run The Water Wonderland Chapter of ACBS held a Fall River Run on Saturday, September 28th. Planning an event like this, so late in the fall (for Michigan boating) can be a crap shoot. We could be basking in 80 degrees sunshine, OR scrapping frost off the decks in the morning and wearing parkas and gloves while enjoying our last boat ride of the season. Don t laugh, cause Ronnie and I had to do that two years ago at this same event! We fired up the engines around 10am and headed South for a 20 mile run on what is the Muskegon River dammed up. Nice twisting tight curves on a wide body of water, at a nice 20 mph clip. Once we got down to the dam, we floated a while and soaked up the sun, temps now up towards 70 degrees. On the way back to the resort, the captains set their own pace, with groups going different speeds. A nice catered lunch by the great folks at the River Resort awaited us at noon. Then we all jumped back into our vessels and headed North, up stream, for several mile run on the narrower part of the river. By now it was 80 degrees and a 10mph wind out of the South, gave us a nice chop on the water. Also about this time of the day, all the locals also started to enjoy this late fall gift of warm weather (Normal around 60 degrees.) We all got thumbs up and had a lot of people taking pictures of us as we cruised by other boaters. Few wanted to get back in the trailer as we came back to the Resort, knowing this just well may be our last GREAT WARM and SUNNY MICHIGAN BOATING DAY for So, What the heck, hit it, and lets do another run down to the dam and back... 12 PRESS RELEASE - Oct. 18, 2013 The Thomas Tommy Mertaugh Memorial Scholarship Fund at GLBBS in the industry. The E. James Mertaugh Family has announced the formation of a scholarship fund for The Great Lakes Boat Building School in special memory of their beloved son and brother, Thomas N. Mertaugh, best known to the world of wooden boat enthusiasts as Tommy. It is the family s preference that the monies be used to assist second-year students who are truly dedicated to becoming highly skilled builders, restorers, and finishers in the wooden boat trade. This is as it should be since no one set the bar any higher than Tommy when it came to perfectionism Tommy s death on October 8 th at only 47 years of age, stunned the wooden boating world. His grandfather, Eugene J. Mertaugh, founded the first Chris-Craft dealership in the country in 1924 in the town of Hessel, in Michigan s Les Cheneaux Islands, with the boat works operating within the family through the next two generations. In 2000, Tommy and his father, Jim, and brother, Dan, created Classic and Antique Boats, with Tommy administrating the business. It became known as one of the finest restoration shops in the country, with its boats winning top prizes everywhere. Tommy dedicated his life to saving the beauty and mystique of wooden boats for posterity; thus this scholarship is most appropriate. In the event that a substantial amount of contributions is received in his memory, an endowment fund will be established through the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation to guarantee the perpetuation of Tommy s dream and to retain the Mertaugh name in boating for generations to come. Contributions may be paid to the order of Les Cheneaux Community Foundation, designating The Thomas Tommy Mertaugh Memorial Scholarship Fund at GLBBS, and mailed to: Les Cheneaux Community Foundation P.O. Box 249 Cedarville, Michigan
