1 Grand Lagoon Yacht Club May Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL Like us on Facebook at Grand Lagoon Yacht Club (group) Commodores Corner As April comes to an end, I am very pleased to announce that all is well with GLYC. We have not experienced any weather or financial storms and have enjoyed a great Murder Mystery set in a very realistic western saloon enjoyed by all in attendance. There were grins all around even after several spent time in the local Jail. We have several coming events including, Bunco Thursday on May 5. Mother's Day Brunch on May 8th at 10am. We also have another Bus trip to Biloxi to the new Scarlet Pearl on Tuesday, May 17th. Meet in the parking lot of GLYC, bring your own coolers and prepare to enjoy the ride and possibly bring back money. We were very pleased to approve seven new members at the April Board meeting. I am not sure but I can find no one who remembers approving that many members at one Board meeting in the past. I think that this proves others see our current members enjoying the club and want to be a part of the fun. When you meet any of the new members, be sure to say hello. They are Ray Dykes, Glen Kent, James and Susan Stark, Kilton and Katie Kingsman, John and Pamela Bowman, Rick and Shelly Trevino, John Brooks and Becca Brecia. Summer is here and I look forward to seeing all at the club, come often and enjoy. Commodore Ronnie Day P.S. Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo June The Vice s Voice APRIL has been a good month. We've had a lot of activity at the Club. There were a couple of very successful private parties. Our Murder Mystery Dinner held on the 16th of April was a hit. Many thanks to Cheri Honeycutt and all of our members who were part of this event. The decorations were awesome! There were two activities held on April 23, the first being our Nautical Flea Market which was a success and the second the Coast Guard Auxiliary which performed free vessel safety checks at our Club pier. We plan to introduce a new menu on May 4th. The Chef has been working with other staff members putting together some new items for us. Please come to the Club and give them a try. On Sunday, May 8, come join us for a delicious Mother's Day Brunch. We need auction items for the Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo. Please drop off items at the Club. REMEMBER we appreciate knowing if there are any problems or if you have any suggestions, so please fill out the Comment Card on the tables. We will try to correct them as soon as possible. Failure to do this can result in the loss of our license. Also, we have changed our sign-in book. We ask that you list your name, GLYC number, your guests names and their addresses. Maybe we can pick up a new member or two! 1

3 CRAPPY CRAFTERS CORNER Our April project was painting the tables and bar down stairs. I had to go camping so I missed it, but the rest of the team did an amazing job. Was told by a very reliable source that they ordered pizza, ate upstairs, then got right back to work. It is soo rewarding to belong to such a fine group of women. Guess that s how we got our name. Our next venture is on the 10th of May. We re going to the Little Zoo in Gulf Shores (such a great time we had last year), then going to lunch. The following Tuesday, the 17th, is our Biloxi trip. Actually, D 'Iberville, to the newest casino, Scarlet Pearl. The bus is already over half full so make sure you sign up soon. The Birthday girls for April are Patti, Jeanne Chandler, Anita, and me. Again, if I haven t mentioned your birthday, it s cause I don t have it. See ya at the Club, Kathy BILL HARGREAVES FISHING RODEO The Fishing Rodeo is rapidly approaching, and we still have lots of work to do. Downstairs is really starting to shape up. The Crafters, led by Kim Edens, did a great job on the tables and bar.! If you haven t been down there, lately, stop in and see what some paint, imagination, and hard work can do. Thanks, ladies, for a job well done. We still have fish sponsorship s available and need to get them covered. If you can help us out, please let us know. The brochures have been completed and will be ready for distribution, soon. Our big push now is for items for the silent auction. This has been a big part of the fun and the fund raising in past Rodeos and will be an important part this year, too. If you have any items you want to donate, bring them by the Club. No item is too big or too small. For those of you who have already contributed to our efforts thank you very, very much!! 4 Spring is finally here, and we ve already had several rough storms. Please remember to stop by and check on your lines. We will schedule a spring workday soon to get the Club ready for the Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo, so be on the look out for the sign up sheets. Currently, we are full on dry slips and east side wet slips. There are several nice wet slips available on the west side. If you are wanting a dry or east side slip, please make sure you are on the waiting list posted on the bulletin board. Any available slips will be assigned according to the waiting list. As the weather improves and more people begin to use the ramp, please refrain from parking in the loading/unloading zone near the ramp. Any long term parking should use the top lot. Lastly, a gentle reminder to please keep your pets under control and clean up after them when at the club. With every warming day, it s looking more and more like boating season. See you on the water! Commodore s Clean-up Comment: If you have been catching instead of fishing please place the fish and bait remains over the side at the T Pier. Keeps the crabs and sharks away from the beach. Also, please carry your trash to the DUMPSTER. The unlined trash cans under the club are for special events. Thanks to all for picking up after yourselves and helping to keep the club looking good. 5 A quick note on activities from the Fleet Captain. The GLYC Cruisers had a good trip to Destin and Ft Walton Yacht Club. There were four vessels that participated and every hand involved had good things to report on the activities. Many thanks to Patricia Geci and Dianne Smith on their help in planning the adventure. On 5/14 and 5/15 BYC will hold its spring regatta in Mobile Bay. The sailing team plans to participate in this race and the GLYC Cruisers are working on a plan to have a vessel near the course watching the race progress and cheering our sailors on. On 5/21 and 5/22 FYC will host the GYA Open regatta in Fairhope where the GLYC Cruisers may also have a vessel stationed near the course to watch the race progress. All plans are of course dependent on the weather. If you are interested in becoming part of the GLYC sailing team let me know and come spend a day watching the activities on Mobile bay. If you are interested in joining the GLYC Cruisers send me an at mikesbigboat@yahoo.com As the boating season progresses I am reminded of the risk we take being around the water. This past week I watched as search and rescue did their job to find a drowned youth who entered the water without a life jacket. He jumped from a boat with a friend and never returned to the surface. There are so many comfortable floatation devices these days. As captain you are responsible to ensure the safety of your passengers and crew. As a passenger or crew member don t make the captain ask, wear your life jacket. Do you have a Paddle Power Vessel (PPV), like a kayak, paddle board, row boat, bathtub or canoe? Or do you have a Jet Ski? We are collecting names of members who would be interested in Paddling activities or Jet Ski activities. If you have interested in being part of the GLYC Paddlers Group contact Susan Arner at suebarner@gmail.com and GLYC Jet Ski group, please contact Mike Odom at mikesbigboat@yahoo.com. The KIDS CORNER at the club was developed to give the children and grandchildren of members a place to call their own. It gives members a chance to have uninterrupted conversations and to keep the children from roaming around the dining room. It works well but it must be maintained to keep it looking attractive. If you have children with you or your group before you leave the club with the children be sure to inspect the KIDS COR- NER with them to insure they have cleaned up and stored all toys properly. GLYC Fun Golf Outing We had seven teams enter our sixth outing held on April 9 at Osceola Golf Course. The winning team was Berly s Boys, captained by Kim (Berly) Edens. Second place was taken by Charlie and His Angels, captained by Tracy DeVack and third went to The Red hot Mommas led by Countess Guiles. There was a three-way tie for third place which was broken only after three holes in a scorecard playoff. Dead -A$$ Last was taken by John Adams with Three Guys and a Gal. Allan Hawkins was Closest to the Pin. Honorable mention teams: The Crippled Chickens, Haskell's Rascals, and The Sundowners. Second to Stacy Hamilton, Joe West, and Rudy Reilly. Most Buncos was taken by Sandra Dorsett, Betty Zelius, and Veronica Pack who also had Last Bunco. Most Wins was earned by Hannah Adams.
