1 MAAVS Affiliate of AVSA Founded March 9, 1991 M E M O Published Quarterly by the Mid-Atlantic African Violet Society August 2015 Volume 25, Number 2 President s Message It s hard to believe that our 2015 MAAVS Convention, Violets Visit the Fair, is just around the corner. Our 25th Annual Convention, October in York, Pennsylvania has Rodney Barnett and Tom Glembocki serving as Co-Convention Chairmen, and Marie Burns and Brenda Petry are Show Chairs. Let me repeat a statement from the previous MEMO. The Mid-Atlantic African Violet Society is not just a society where people enjoy growing African violets (as well as other related gesneriads) get President, Joan Santino, at the Wilmington, Delaware, Convention together. Over the years, it has become a group of friends who truly enjoy the company of each other as we gather to present a show each year for the public to enjoy. That said, MAAVS is very special! Let s keep a good thing going! MEMO Editor, Ken Barbi is including the Approved York Show Schedule in this issue for our convenience starting on Page 14. Look at your plant stands now and mark those pots that need TLC as show entries. Yes, we need entries for a successful show! And about awards: Pull out your checkbook, make a donation for Awards (checks payable to MAAVS), and mail your check to Kitty Hedgepeth right away (her address is on Page 9); or alternatively you can add a donation to your Convention Registration Form on Page 7. I d like to see an entry in every class and an award to match! Ways and Means is another avenue of importance for a successful show. Rich Follett (richfoll@yahoo.com)is managing this, so begin now and set aside violet-related items for the Ways and Means fund raising tables. It s not too early to reserve your room at the Wyndham Garden York, 2000 Loucks Road, York,

2 PA Call before September 22 nd and be sure to specify that you re calling for the MAAVS convention (mention Group Code MI) to get our fantastic room rate of $109, which includes a complimentary breakfast. A tax of 9% will be added to the above rate. I m looking forward to a superfantabulous MAAVS event, Thursday, October 22 to Saturday, October 24 in York, PA. It s your turn to help us make it all happen! This will be my last Message as your President. Thank you for allowing me to preside over MAAVS for the last four years. This has been a WOW experience in my life! I will continue to be active in the society in the future as the Affiliate Director representing AVS Springfield. By the way, look for my contributions to the Ways and Means table this October. See you in York! Show Chairman s Message Joan Work is progressing for our 2015 Show and Convention Violets Visit The Fair. The Show Committee is ready and awaiting your plant and design entries. There is ample space so start working on your show entries. I am sure we will have a lovely show. This year we are having a double celebration. The York Fair is celebrating 250 years and our society is celebrating MAAVS 25 th Annual Convention. Can you believe that we have been together all these years? I was at the very first meeting and it seems like that was yesterday. It is the friends we have made and the many wonderful plants our commercials have offered for sale that has made these pastyears so enjoyable. The Friday night costume party will have a couples theme. Use your imagination and find a partner for your State Fair Costume. State Fair goers wear anything from shorts and t-shirts to farmers outfits. You can be an entertainers or a food vendor. The choices are endless. Any couple you might see attending a fair will work for a costume. Check out Tom s Down Memory Lane on Page 13. MAAVS is the hosting club for this convention. The Baltimore African Violet Club is lending a hand with hospitality and would appreciate any goodies you might bring to share. There is no refrigeration so cookies, muffins, fruit etc. would be ideal. We will also need volunteers as hosts in the showroom. Anyone able to spare some time please sign up at the registration table. 2

22 AVSA 2015 Convention and Show DVD The AVSA National 2015 Convention and Show took place in Kansas City. Award winning African violets, other gesneriads and Designs can be seen in a narrated tour on the official AVSA 2015 Show DVD. In addition, this year's DVD provides videos that will bring the convention to life, including interviews with show winners Belinda Thibodeax, Bill Price, Suzanne Roberts, and Janice Davidson. Another short video is an excellent interview of a first time convention attendee and, of course, the enjoyable "Behind the Scenes" shots that are set against a selection of vintage jazz reflecting the theme of the show. The DVD will be available in early September from the AVSA office for $19.95 but, by special arrangement with the AVSA Library Committee, Tom Glembocki will have copies available at MAAVS in York for only $15. Contact tom@maavs.org to reserve your copy today. This DVD trip to the 2015 National convention is perfect for your next club meeting. Reserve your room at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Go to their web site at and make your reservation using Group Code is MI to get the $109 rate, or call before September 22 nd. 22
