Track everyone's activities on a prominent and accessible calendar, encouraging your child to write their own entries and reference the calendar when making plans. You also might consider checking schedules and updating the calendar as a family over Sunday breakfast. Introduce checklists. Whether it's as simple as "3 Things To Do Before Bed" or "What To Take On Vacation," creating and referring to lists together will develop your child's ability to strategize tasks and organise their time. Assign chores that involve sorting or categorising. Grocery shopping, emptying the dishwasher, sorting photos, cleaning out a closet, and other tasks that involve pre-planning, making lists, or arranging things are great choices. Get ready the night before. This one's always tough - for both of you - but it does work if you can make it a habit. Use containers and closet organisers. If there's a place for everything, they'll find it easier to find items, keep neat, and clean up. Build "pick up" time into the daily routine. Buy your child a planner. Ask them to help you pick it out or choose one that will appeal to them so they ll be excited about using it. Having their own planner will show them you consider their time valuable and encourage them to create a schedule. Be sure to coordinate the information routinely with your family calendar to avoid conflicts. Organise schoolwork. Make sure your child's keeping notes, homework, hand-outs, and graded assignments in separate folders in a binder. Establish a homework routine. Help your child make a "study hour" schedule and set up a comfortable workspace -- whether their room or the kitchen table. Encourage them to stick to the schedule even when they don't have homework. (They can read, review notes, or even do a crossword puzzle.) Create a homework supply box. Fill a box with office supplies and encourage your child to store pens, paper, measurement tools, and a calculator in it so they will have what they needs on hand. Cook together. Cooking teaches measuring, following directions, sorting ingredients, and managing time - all key elements in organisation. Involve your child in meal planning too, challenging them to help you put together a shopping list. Cultivate an interest in collecting. If your child has a particular interest, encourage them to create and organise the collection. It can even be something free - such as rocks or stickers - that he/she can sort, classify, and arrange. Reward and provide support with organisational tasks. Your child may find organising a challenge, so help them develop their routine and give them a treat for jobs well done!

Pastoral Interact Conference Adrain Slaughter On Saturday, 24 March 2018, the Hudson Park High School Interact Board Members attended the Annual Eastern Cape Interact Conference, held in East London. The program, costing R 70 per delegate and paid for by the Interacters themselves, included ice-breakers, a toast to South Africa, an address by Rotarian Craig Thompson, presentations by : Alphendale, Cambridge, Grens, Beaconhurst and ourselves. The Guest Speaker was Lana Hanner (nee Walker) who was Head Girl of Hudson Park in She gave a riveting and informative address which everyone found extremely motivating. The topic concerned the operation of "Greensleeves", which is run by Mrs Lehy. The conference ended off on a sweet note with ice cream and exciting toppings being enjoyed by all. We are grateful to Cambridge High School for hosting the conference this year and look forward to next year's conference. Breath of Life Brenda Friend An amount of R1000 and over 120 articles were collected for Breath of Life, our School project for Term 1. The hand over took place on Friday 20 April following a short video presentation by Breath of Life on the work that they do. We also have a collection bin for odd clothes that they resell to generate funds. Cheerleaders Jackie Acton The brand new 2018 squad took to the field for the first time at our first Home Derby against Cambridge High School on Saturday 14 April. With a total of 10 new girls in a squad of 17, the girls were exceptionally nervous for their first school appearance. They have been working extremely hard during the first term to prepare for our winter sports events and this could be seen in their polished and well-choreographed routine. With such a great start to the season, we are looking forward to enjoying their upcoming performances. The Cheerleaders will perform on the field, during the First Team Rugby Match, at all our Home Derbies.

Culture Hudson Park Band Wesley Wong The Concert Band production of "A Night at the Movies" was held on the 21st of April in the Hudson Primary School Hall. The show was a resounding success! The band played amazingly and the audience was thoroughly entertained and left longing for more. The concert band put in eleven months of hard work to produce the show and the caliber of our musicians shone through. The show was so well received that a second performance will soon take place to cater for the increased demand. A hearty congratulations goes out to all the band and cast members for this fantastic showcase. In addition a huge thank you to all who were involved with the show! Comments from the audience: Thank you for a wonderful evening of music on Saturday night. The performance paid tribute to the professional and devoted teachers who share their souls with their talented HPHS students. Rae Emslie Congratulations Hudson Park Musicians on the Band s excellent performance on Saturday night. A Night at the Movies was true to its word. The audience was treated to a feast of movie music, wonderfully well presented and wonderfully well played! East London can be proud to have a school such as Hudson Park presenting such high quality music. Thank you for a great evening. Colleen Smith

Qhayiya Launch Busisiswe Ntombela On the 15th of March 2018, the Centenary Hall hosted the annual Qhayiya Multi-Cultural Society Launch. The committee and the respected teachers in charge, Miss Ntombela, Miss Sijadu and Miss Mahlangeni put in countless numbers of planning, starting from the camp that was held in January to make sure that the night would run smoothly and to ensure that it would be a success. And indeed it was. The society at large rehearsed almost every day for at least two months and every day for the last two weeks leading up to the event. Our events department made sure that every act was in top condition before going on stage. All the performances were well received by the audience, with clapping, dancing, singing along, standing ovations and ululation as signs of enjoyment. Every year we see an even bigger and bigger crowd turnout and this year was no different. With a huge turnout from Hudsonians as usual, with some dressed in traditional attire or simply displaying their Hudson pride by wearing their school uniform. Also a huge turnout was received from numerous other schools around East London. Parents also came out in numbers to support and so it is fitting to say that the event was well received by East London in general. Our catering department ensured that the parents and staff were well taken care of during the interval. The night was a huge success, with everything we had anticipated to go wrong, going right. Thank you to our three teachers who have become our parents, without their wise counsel and guidance, the night wouldn t have been a success. Also thank you to the Hudson parents who availed themselves for the night and availed their children to come and rehearse for countless hours. Thank you to the Hudson Park teachers for supporting the society and for always keeping the family spirit going. All the hours of team work, planning and dedication still carry on as we plan our next event, Mr. & Miss Culture, which will be in the third term. We trust it will be just as successful as the launch.

Grade 8 Jonginenge Outing Wayne Marr The \grade 8 group was treated to a fantastic and exciting outing to Nahoon beach towards the end of last term. On arrival they were divided into teams and were sent in various directions on our magnificent coastline. The aim of the outing was to create environmental awareness and to participate in many fun team building exercises. We were blessed with great weather and the beach environment was an indicator of the fun we were going to have. The learners were exposed to canoeing, beginners surf lessons and sand-boarding. Many learners had never experienced these activities before and it was great to see many of them trying to get these skills right, It was amazing to also see how many kept on trying even though they were falling off, a testament to the character of the group! There were many team-building activities included in the day, which allowed learners who did not really know each other, the chance to work together. The team building activities focused both on mental and physical obstacles. Everyone in the group needed to be involved as both brain and brawn were required. Valuable lessons were learnt through these group activities, which ensured that everyone worked together as a cohesive group to achieve success. My favourite activity in this category was trying to fill a vertical pipe which had many holes in it with water. The pupils had to plug these holes with their fingers so that the pipe could be filled as quickly as possible. The outing was a great success and there were many smiling faces at the end of the day, this was a good indicator of the fun that was had.

Rugby James Winstanley Rugby began with a flurry in March as our first team participated in the Border Schools Day vs Dale College, unfortunately losing 3-8 on the final play of the game which was live-streamed on School Sport Live. The following week an improved performance saw the team lose to St Andrews in what was a solid performance, with opportunities for the win going amiss on a number of occasions. The teams early form carried into the KES Easter Festival where the boys won the hearts and minds of the crowd with come from behind wins against Eldoraigne and Marais Viljoen 23-22, before losing to a powerful Jeppe team on the last day. The younger teams performed admirably against St Andrews, with all of our teams recording clean sweeps against Cambridge and Port Rex in the second term. Stern tests await our boys at the Grey PE festival this coming weekend. Sinethemba Qeshile s star has continued to rise after the former Hudson Park High School captain was included in the squad of players who will travel to Mumbai, India for the annual spin bowling camp from the end of the month, 5 April 2018 Daily Dispatch The son of late playwright Gibson Kente, Mzwandile Ngoqo, is overjoyed that a new East London theatre has been named after his Duncan Village-born dad, known as the father of township drama. Ngoqo, 54, who lives in Soweto, paid a visit to the nearly completed 260-seat amphitheatre, which is being built in Hudson Park High School and which is the brainchild of the school s head of drama, Pierre Perold. When Pierre showed me the theatre I was close to tears, said Ngoqo. It was a goosebump experience. It is very fitting that the first theatre to be called after my dad should be in East London. I have a lot of respect for Pierre. People like him are custodians of our culture. 13 March 2018 Daily Dispatch
