A reminder for all of our new members-the club gives you one name badge. If you need others, contact Terry Smith and he will give you the price and order it for you. Our second Scavenger Hunt, always a huge success, hosted by Robin and David Ward, ended at Dockside for lunch with awards going to: 1st: Christin and Patty, 2nd: Tom and Susan, 3rd: Ron and Beth and the "Patootie" to Cal and Craig. Edinburgh Pub Day will be March 12th, 4:00, at Tom and Susan's. Please remember to bring imported beer to share if you plan on tasting all of the others. Also, you are welcome to bring your own wine, beer or whatever, to have during the party. As of now, there are 21 (!!) scheduled events planned until the end of the year. Hope you can find several things you like to do! On a lighter note. Have you ever heard of the "Bachelor Lean"? Bet your car has one! Seems that our LBC's were driven most of the time by a single fellow which allowed the car to lean to the left or right. I put a level on top of the back of my seat, and, sure enough, it's leaning to the left! Try it! I'll see everyone at the upcoming events! 10 Here is the recipe for the corn & crab chowder that I brought to the cookoff. I'm still looking for the "perfect place" to put the trophy! Kudos to all for a great event. By - Gail Guthrie Corn and Crab Chowder INGREDIENTS: 5 slices bacon 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon clarified butter 1 bag frozen corn 1 can creamed corn 3/4 cup chopped onion 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 1/2 quarts chicken stock 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup dry white wine 3 cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon brandy 1 cup half-and-half cream 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil Gail & Merritt Guthrie 1 pound peeled and deveined small shrimp or scallops 1 teaspoon ground white pepper 2 tablespoon Creole seasoning 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 pound fresh lump crabmeat 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves DIRECTIONS: 1 Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Remove the bacon, and reserve the grease. Allow the bacon to cool, then crumble, and set aside with the grease. 2 Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of clarified butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion, green pepper, celery, and garlic. Cook and stir until the onion has 10

11 softened and turned translucent, about 10 minutes. Pour in the white wine and brandy, and bring to a simmer. Season with the basil, white pepper, cayenne pepper, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce. Add the corn and potatoes, then pour in the chicken stock. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 10 minutes. 3 While the soup is simmering, melt 1/2 cup of butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir in the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, until the flour has turned the color of peanut butter to make a roux, about 10 minutes. 4 Stir the roux into the soup, and pour in the heavy cream, half-and-half cream, reserved bacon and grease, and shrimp. Return to a simmer over medium-high heat, and cook until the shrimp are no longer translucent in the center, the potatoes are tender, at the soup has thickened, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with Creole seasoning, and stir in the crab meat to serve. 11
