We had about 25% of our club members at each dance. Our Subs On The Club night was enjoyed by all who attended. DJ Roy Childress kept the dance floor full. DJ Jerry Burrage entertained all at the Moose dance. Summer time weather is keeping it hot. I am pushing 60 miles in my daily ocean swimming and am ready to start again after our recent visit to California to see the grandchildren. Our first dance this month is right around the corner on August 11 th at the VFW. It will be a new theme: Bring Wings and Things. Many club members are chicken wing aficionados. We hope it goes well. We are asking club members to bring wings or something to compliment the wings. Our dance at the Moose will be themed Howl at The Moon as there is a Lunar eclipse soon. Our leftover food purchases from Beach Day will provide the Hotdogs and Burgers for our summer cookout at the VFW September 8 th. Summertime is definitely here with many places available to go and dance. The Sunday afternoon concerts at Holden Beach draw good crowds, including some SOBS. We continue to need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. It is good to see so many of our members help with the decorations and cleanup. I am working with Sam and Lisa West to have the Junior Shaggers for a demonstration at the September 22 nd Moose dance. In addition we will have a dance shoe donation drive that same night with the shoes going to the Junior Shaggers for refurbishment and to be given to young people who want to learn to dance, so look in your closets. I know I have some to give. Our club has for sale SOS Fun Monday tickets for September s Fall Migration SOS. In mentioning SOS, I am in the process of making the arrangements for our traditional Fall Migration SOS Freepour at the OD Pavilion, for Saturday, September 16 th starting at 2 PM until the money is spent. I will continue to stress the importance of these tickets. We are also getting ready for our Operation Uplink VFW Fundraiser which will be at the first October dance. The Raffle tickets and information letters are approved and will be available at our first August dance and online around the first of August. If any club members are interested in some dance lessons; VP Chuck & Sandy Boney will be starting their Fall lessons in Southport and Leland the first weeks in September, Katy & I will be starting ours in August at Stone Chimney Senior Center and in Calabash. Let Chuck or me know if any of you folks are interested. These lessons are through Brunswick County Parks and Recreation. August 15, Woodstock began in a field near Yasgur's Farm at Bethel, New York. Our next board meeting date is still to be decided due to scheduling conflicts. Let us know if there are club issues that you would like to see us address. On a sad note, former SOBS President Bill Ruth passed away last week. He was a fine man, a great DJ and a good friend. He was our club s 3 rd President and began our relationship with our VFW home here on Oak Island. The Shag community is a lesser place. We hope to see you on the dance floor! John Hutton, President Your 2017 Society of Brunswick Shaggers Board Members... John Hutton, President Chuck Boney, Vice President Cathy Myers, Secretary Steve Smith, Treasurer Joe Malinowski, Newsletter & Membership

We are checking other possible alternatives. The SOBS Banner has been replaced and re-hung in the OD Pavilion and fits the spot perfectly. We will ask members to bring Bring Wings & Things for our August dance at the VFW. Members are invited to bring their favorite wings and other good things to eat! Discussions with Sam West regarding the Junior Shaggers demonstration continue. It is scheduled for the September 22 nd Dance. Roger Arbizu s Lions Club charity donation was discussed. It was decided to concentrate our charitable efforts on our usual donations. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT: Joe reports that we are holding at a record 222 members! The Website is up to date. Katy O Neill will send pictures of Beach Day to Joe so he can put them on the Website. Joe will prepare club member address labels and club return address labels for the Operation Uplink ticket mail out. Meeting was adjourned at 6:43 PM. Cathy Myers, Secretary

7 Au gust 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 7 Remember Woodstock Music & Art Fair August 15-17, 1969 (from Yep, it s been 48 years & some of the bands are still playing! Woodstock was the pop culture music event of the decade and arguably to this day the single most profound event in the history of music. Acts from all around the world met at Max Yasgur s Farm in Bethel, NY on August 15-18, 1969 for a celebration of peace and music. What began as a paid event drew so many viewers from across the world that the fences were torn down and it became a free concert open to the public. 500,000 youthful individuals gathered peacefully at Woodstock 1969 creating the largest gathering of human beings in one place in history. Woodstock 1969 defined an entire generation and its effects on music and American culture can still be felt today. Woodstock 69 featured one of the most prolific musical lineups in history including such icons as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Santana, and The Who. Fans got a taste of a variety of music styles which came together in perfect harmony. The crowd at Woodstock in 1969, which reached near a half a million people sent a message to the world that individuals could come together peacefully to celebrate peace and music. Such an extravagant event warranted the production of an academy award winning documentary of Woodstock 1969 and a number of popular Woodstock film and album releases. The Woodstock 1969 poster has come to be one of the most famous images in American culture as well as a symbol of peace. Hollywood movies are still being made to celebrate the event such as Taking Woodstock, the story of Elliot Tiber. The music at Woodstock in 1969 embodied extraordinary popular acts from all over the world. Legendary performances by such music icons as Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Santana, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin are still considered landmarks in music history. Woodstock in 1969 was also among the last performances of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin who are seen as some of the best in their respective fields. The entire psychedelic music vein became popularized at Woodstock 69 and still influences bands of all ages to this day. Hippie is a term that has not diminished in popularity or as a subculture to this day. The youth of the 1960 s all came together with similar ideals and became the most popular counterculture archetype. The hippie culture shook the foundation of conformity to its core, reports of attempts to disperse the half a million individuals have been surfacing ever since the event. Individuals able to organize in that magnitude for a common interest was something that those in power were absolutely terrified of and had every right to be. Had Woodstock 1969 s focus turned from music to revolution, the world would be an entirely different place today. After Woodstock 1969, the name Woodstock became a very profitable brand name. The concert was initially designed as a money making endeavor. Woodstock Ventures ended up going far into the basement monetarily after the concert, but eventually recovered and became the corporate enterprise that it is known as today. The recent installments have been seen as corporatized disasters; however, the impact of the initial event is still so profound to this day that anything with the Woodstock brand tacked onto it draws a large amount of attention. Woodstock 1969 has since been a household name and integrated into mainstream American living.
