The Moose Lodge will now charge us to use the ballroom facility for our monthly dance there. We have used it for free for the past 10+ years. After positive negotiations we have agreed to pay $ a dance for the first 4 months of this year rising to $ per month thereafter. In an effort to make this as painless on all as is possible and still do the things that we want, admission at Moose dances will be $5.00 for members beginning with the February dance. Please let me or any other board member know if you have ideas or want to help out. Our club continues to need the help of its members in an effort to make things go smoothly. With 200 members we should have many who want to help out and meet their fellow members. Due to change, February s board meeting will be Wednesday, February 1st at the Moose Lodge, starting at 6 PM. February brings our annual VFW Valentine s Day Dance and this year again our Chili Cook Off at the Moose Lodge. The categories will be Spiciest, Flavorful, and Vegetarian. There will be an Overall People s Choice Winner and a 1 st and 2nd place in each category. We look for a good turnout for this. Our January 22 nd Winter Series #1 dance at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill went well. DJ Bill Anderson kept the dance floor full. A great day at an Oceanfront venue. These Sunday dances continue in February and March. Everyone is invited, there will be no charge, bring a friend who is not a club member to share in the fun. We will be having 2 bushels of Oysters to eat at the February 19 th Winter Series #2 dance with DJ Jerry Burrage. If you re not an oyster fan, The Lazy Turtle has a great menu. The March 19 th Winter Series #3 dance will feature a traditional Southern Style Pig-Picking courtesy of Patti and Steve Smith with DJ Claude Collins. Spring Safari SOS is right around the corner in April. Our club will again have a parade entry. Come be a part of a good time. The theme for the parade this year is Dance Fever. Our traditional Free Pour will be after the parade. More info to follow. We hope to see you on the dance floor. Lots to look forward to in 2017! John Hutton, President 2017 Society of Brunswick Shaggers Board Members... John Hutton, President Chuck Boney, Vice President Cathy Myers, Secretary Steve Smith, Treasurer Joe Malinowski, Newsletter & Membership Ellen Wester, Immediate Past President

3 F eb ruary 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 3 Intimidation of the Dance Floor (National Fast Dance Association Newsletter - January/February 2013, by Roger Weiss) As a local dance teacher and producer, I ve heard a lot of comments from dancers about feeling uncomfortable or inhibited on the dance floor. Beginning dancers sometimes feel uncomfortable because they don t know many people and it seems that everybody else at the dance knows each other. Try attending the lesson before the dance, if there is one. The lesson is a good way both to warm up and to get to know people, especially because everyone is usually encouraged to switch partners. By the time the dance starts, you ve shared a common experience with anywhere from twenty to a hundred people and you may even have several prospective dance partners. Beginning (and not-so-beginning) dancers also worry that they can t dance as well as the other people in the room. Often a man is hesitant to ask a woman to dance if he feels that she is a much better dancer than he is. But remember that a lot of the enjoyment of dancing comes more from the feeling you get dancing with your partner than from doing fancy moves. If, as a leader, you feel unsure about your dancing, here are a few suggestions: stick to the moves you know, listen to the music, talk to your partner and smile. Followers should try to relax and connect with their partners. It s your partner s responsibility to make you feel comfortable. A good leader will always dance to the level of experience of the follower, and will never show off. Couple dancing is not about how well you can dance, but how well the two of you can dance together. Many people hesitate to ask the more experienced dancers to dance because they see them as dance snobs - dancers who only dance with other good dancers. Keep in mind that a lot of experienced dancers have been dancing with one another for years and have become friends. Experienced dancers however could benefit the whole dance community by making the effort to dance with newcomers to make them feel welcome. If a newcomer has at least one good dance experience, he or she is more likely to come back and perhaps tell friends about the experience. Without a constant influx of new people, the dance scene will eventually dry up. Remember, we re dancing to have fun. Taking it too seriously and feeling intimidated wastes a lot of time. Don t worry about learning every new move; time will take care of that. Listen to and dance with the music. When you do what you can to make your partner enjoy dancing with you, the pleasure will be returned many fold. SOBS Winter Series Dances at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill... Hey SOBS! Our first SOBS Winter Series shag dances at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on the OKI ocean front was a great success! On the Sundays of February 19 th and March 19 th we will have dances starting at 1 PM to 5 PM. At our Winter Series #2 dance on February 19 th dance will have DJ Jerry Burrage and hopefully an oyster roast. And, finally at our March 19 th dance we will have DJ Claude Collins and a southern pig pickin. More details will follow as we get closer to those dates. We re just trying to give you a few more opportunities to wear out those Weejuns!

4 F eb ruary 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 4 Did You Re-Up / Join-Up Yet?... If you didn t, you know who you are! OK fellow SOBS, it s Re-Up / Join-Up time! Unless you are changing some of your membership information or we need to make any corrections, let us know at the registration table and pay your dues. Of course, new members will have to initially fill out the form. A Membership Application for your friends is on the last page of this newsletter for their convenience. Checks should made out to the SOCIETY OF BRUNSWICK SHAGGERS. They take money in and check off Members/Guests at the door and direct questions (Membership, SOS Cards, etc.) to a SOBS Officer. They could also check on the Guests throughout the night and answer any questions. These people are our AMBASSADORS! COMMUNICATION anyone is welcome to write articles or submit pictures for our Newsletter/Website. Your experiences at events (dances, SOS, etc.) would certainly be welcome. Deadline for our Newsletter is the 25th of the month. ENTERTAINMENT responsible for helping set up (decorate) and clean up at selected dances. These are important positions as we need to leave our venues as we found them and the Board Members do eventually tire of the tasks. SOCIAL volunteers to participate (dance or make costumes) in the SOS Parade in April, sell raffle tickets or procure items for auction at our Charity event, and to sell 50/50 tickets at our regular dance events. ANYTHING NEEDED This is the MEGA-VOLUNTEER who is available at most club functions. You can offer up your services at any event and as well as making yourselves available for last minute needs.

5 F eb ruary 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 5 The Day the Music Died!, February 3, Rock n roll was still in its infancy when it suffered its first tragedy. On February 3, 1959, three of its biggest stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, known as the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. The three acts, along with Dion and the Belmonts, were on a package tour called the Winter Dance Party, which was to play 24 Midwestern cities in as many days. But the bus's heating system was ill-equipped and broke down a few days later, which caused some musicians to catch the flu and Holly s drummer Carl Bunch to be hospitalized for frostbite. By the time they reached the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake on February 2, 1959 about a week and a half into the tour, Holly, after the show, decided to charter a plane from nearby Mason City to Fargo, N.D., just across the state line from their next gig in Moorhead, Minn. As a bonus, Holly would be able to do his laundry, which had been neglected since the tour began. The plane, a Beechwood Bonanza, had room for only three passengers Holly and his band and the pilot, Roger Peterson. Holly s bass player, future country legend Waylon Jennings, gave up his seat to Richardson, who was ill. According to Jennings autobiography, Holly teased his bass player by saying, Well, I hope your ol bus freezes up. To which Jennings responded, Well, I hope your ol plane crashes. There are conflicting stories as to how Valens wound up in the third seat. Tommy Allsup, Holly s guitarist, claimed that he lost a coin flip to Valens in the dressing room. In 2010, Dion DiMucci, who had been silent about that night for 51 years, claimed that he, not Allsup, was slated for the third seat because he was one of the headliners. But after winning the coin toss, he balked at paying $36 for the flight the amount his parents paid in monthly rent for the apartment where he grew up and gave Valens the seat. Local DJ Bob Hale, who was the MC for the concert, agrees that it was between Allsup and Valens, but that he, not Allsup, flipped the coin. Regardless of the contradictions, around 12:55 AM on February 3, 1959 the plane carrying Holly, Richardson and Valens took off in a snowstorm with strong winds. But the plane traveled only a few miles before crashing, killing all four men instantly. The federal investigation ruled that even though the weather played a large role in the accident, the 21- year-old Peterson was too inexperienced to have been flying in such conditions. In addition, he had most likely misread the altitude indicator, which was different than the one on which he had trained, and inadvertently brought the plane down instead of up. At the time, Holly s wife of six months, Maria Elena, was two weeks pregnant. The day after the crash, she suffered a miscarriage from the emotional trauma. In March 1980, a long-missing piece of the plane crash was discovered. Holly s signature black-rimmed glasses had landed in a snow bank and were discovered in the spring of 1959, after the snow melted. They were brought to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff s office, sealed in a manila envelope and forgotten about for 21 years. Upon discovery, the glasses were returned to his widow and are currently on permanent display at the Buddy Holly Center in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas. More information can be read at:
