N O V E M B E R T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 3 The Cost of a Shag Club... by Renee Harris Baker, Lancaster Shag Club Since the SOBS have 67 new members this year, it s a good time to revisit this article from Renee Harris Baker of the Lancaster Shag Club. It takes more than just people showing up to dance to support a shag club. Membership - Why pay a membership fee? Lots of people are content to pay more money for entrance to parties rather than save money by paying a membership fee and paying the lower entrance fee to parties, because they don't want to have to "do a job" in the club. Well, memberships are needed for clubs to survive. Clubs that are members of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) have to pay a yearly fee. This also entitles you to buy your SOS card at a reduced amount. Clubs have to pay a fee to the one of the music associations in order for the DJs to be able to play artists music for the public. Clubs have expenses such as websites and their upkeep, newsletters to publish, flyers for parties or events, and other expenses just to exist. Membership money doesn't cover the cost of bi-weekly or monthly parties. Some clubs are fortunate enough to have a restaurant or club to support them and allow them to use their facilities free of charge. These clubs are few and far between. Most clubs have to pay rent for the facility and also pay for the DJ to play. Venues aren't cheap. This is why clubs must also charge a fee at the door for the party and sell raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets. An average club will have to pay at a minimum $400 or maybe even $600 to have a party. That would be a $4 to $6 entrance fee for 100 people... see where I'm going with this? Then, even if you have a cash bar and members bring food or snacks, the club has to furnish plates, napkins, forks. Decorations? Not required, but people prefer a little something. You need tickets to have a raffle, paper, pens, books to keep track of people signing in, expenses, etc. Our goal is to preserve and promote the shag. Shag lessons, events in the community, donations to our community or shag related causes. Our officers are required to attend 3 of the mandatory meetings held by ACSC who own and maintain SOS. Should these unpaid workers have to spend their own money for gas, food, rooms, and event fees to serve their club? Money aside, parties don't just happen. You have members that serve as Officers and Board Members. Should they have to do ALL the work for the club? No. They are the representatives and final decision makers, but they alone can't do all the work. Parties need a venue, they need a date, a DJ, persons to get the room ready, set up tables, decorate, persons to man the door and sign in people, take up the money, someone to organize the food, persons to sell the raffle and 50/50 tickets, someone to make the announcements, people to clean up, someone to pay the venue and the DJ, someone to send updates and pictures to the webmaster and the editor of the newsletter. What about when the party is over? Someone has to publish the newsletter, coordinate charity functions, advertise upcoming events, teach the shag lessons to get new members in... the list goes on. So what does it mean to be a member? Let's see... Webster says a "constituent part of a whole". It takes the members working together as a whole to keep the group together. Everyone must play their part. Not everyone needs to perform the same task, and some are better at different tasks than others. The club can't function without the members. Without the members, there is no party. Without a party, you don't get to talk to your friends and dance! Therefore, participate, support your club by coming to the dances, promote the club, work for the club, bring new friends in to further growth of the club, have an opinion and don't expect something for nothing.

N O V E M B E R T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 6 Mark Trull - Congratulations on Your RETIREMENT!! We, in the SOBS, are fortunate to have members who are not just great people, but who have served our community and country with honor. One of those individuals is our own Mark Trull who recently retired from the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office after 25 years service. Mark rose to the rank of Captain and served as the Comptroller within the Finance Division. Mark & his wife April live in Bolivia, NC. April teaches at Bolivia Elementary and will be retiring next year. His hobby is restoring antique tractors and has built a barn to work on and store them. He currently has two tractor restorations in progress. Mark always wanted to be a farmer he still may make it! Mark served four years in the Air Force and five years in the North Carolina Air National Guard. He is a commercial airplane/helicopter pilot. Actually flew a little for the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office. Mark is instrument rated in airplanes (SOBS Dennis Faver taught him). Yep, he s still flying air tours for Brunswick Air out of Cape Fear Regional Jetport. Very popular with the boss because he weighs so little. This way, the airplanes can carry heavier passengers! We wish only the best for Mark and April as they enjoy the next phase of their lives! SOBS Embroidered Logo... Hey SOBS! You can now show your club colors & loyalty by having a personal item embroidered by fellow SOBS Member, Beth Uhl. The logo is depicted here on the right and can be embroidered on polo shirts, button-up shirts, towels (like we don t sweat much during the Summer months!) and tote bags. Great Christmas gifts!! The cost is only $15 and will be completed within 10 days to 2 weeks. Other sizes of the logo are also available at an additional charge. Proudly wear our logo gear at SOS and other shag events! See Beth at one of our dances or contact her at (910) for pick-up and delivery options.

N O V E M B E R T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 8 November DJ Information... October was a fantastic month of dancing with DJs John Hook, Ken Jones and JJ Kinlaw. Our Operation Uplink Fundraiser was a great success. All together, the contributions of our DJ s helped make Operation Uplink the success that it always is. Both Ken Jones and JJ Kinlaw enjoyed their first times playing for us. JJ really enjoyed the variety of costumes in the costume contest. Ken Jones kept the dance floor full as SOBS enjoyed our first Sunday dance with a free drink or two for members attending the Lazy Turtle afternoon. If you enjoyed Fessa John Hook, he can be heard daily on 94.1 FM from Wilmington and will be playing our Re-Up/Join-Up dance on January 25, He said that he really enjoys playing for us because... we are a dancing club! The holidays are fast upon us with festive fun. Spinning the discs for our November dances are: Friday, November 9 th - DJ Robert OKI Moose Lodge Sunday, November 18 th - DJ Bob Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill DJ Robert Carter will be our DJ at our November 9 th Thanksgiving Dinner Dance. Robert is our former club President and a longtime SOBS club member. He now lives at North Myrtle Beach. Robert played our club s first Valentine s dance and has been playing for us ever since. He began his DJ career at Shucker s/turtle Island on Oak Island and has been associated with Beach, Shag, Boogie and Blues music for the last 40+ years. Mark your calendar for Friday, November 9 th at the Oak Island Moose Lodge for an evening of fine dining, music and dancing. On Sunday, November 18 th at the Oceanfront Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill will be our 2 nd Sunday Series afternoon dance party of the Fall. DJ Bill Anderson, an SOB, as well as a member of the Coastal Shag Club will be playing. He is now a full member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ s. Bill began his career as a DJ in the early 2000 s and is developing a following. Put that Sunday afternoon on your calendar. I will begin booking 2019 DJs in the next two months. I hope club members enjoy the variety of DJs that play for us. We have the best in today s Beach Music. Have they have played your requests? Did you hear a great new song played? Let me know if you hear a DJ you like. Every DJ wants us to be happy with their performance. I am always pleased with the professionalism that they display. As far as I know, the SOBS are the only Shag Dance club in the ACSC that has 2 or more dances per month. See you on the dance floor! John Hutton, DJ Selection

N O V E M B E R T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 9 Final Report - 15 th Annual Beach Music Shag Dance & Fundraiser benefitting VFW s Operation Uplink and Brunswick County s New Hope Clinic Thank you SOBS and your guests (and checkbooks!) for a most successful event. Operation Uplink, held October 12 at the Moose Lodge, saw nearly 150 people enjoy an evening of dancing, raffles and high stakes auction bidding. Preliminary figures indicate that our club raised over $7000 which will be donated to both the VFW s Operation Uplink through the Oak Island Post and to Brunswick County s own New Hope Clinic. Over 100 items were available for bidding at the Silent Auction and 34 items were included in the raffle. 75 door prizes were awarded throughout the evening. Congratulations to the winners of all the goodies. DJ John Fessa Hook kept the dance floor full playing everybody s favorite dance tunes. A big Thank you to club members who solicited fabulous items for the event, bought and donated baskets and items and especially to those who donated their hand-crafted items. We certainly have a great group of artists in our club-jewelers, woodworkers, quilters, basket makers and paper crafters. Your hand work created a wondrous display of talent and gifts. I know that the recipients of our club s efforts-service men & women across the globe- are thankful that our organization steps up to support them through the VFW. Our neighbors and their children here in Brunswick County will be able to lead healthier lives because of our donation to New Hope Clinic. I proudly oversaw this event and thank all who lent a hand, decorated a table, wrote a check or assisted with clean up. We re a great group of SOBS. Look forward to upcoming dances when we will disperse the funds to representatives of the VFW and New Hope Clinic. Chairperson: Katy O Neill Save the Date! December 8, 2018, SOBS "Christmas Dinner & Toy Drive" Shag Dance... It s that time again to share a little bit of our Christmas spirit to those in need. Over the years, thanks to all the SOBS, we have donated toys and gifts for our annual toy drive benefiting the Oak Island Community Center Christmas Wish List. It s heartwarming to see our members share their good fortune with others in the area. Last year, we had at least 2 car loads of toys delivered and definitely warmed the hearts of many deserving children. The Oak Island Community Center and Oak Island Police Department is very grateful for the all the wonderful donated toys and gifts from our membership. So, please bring a new un-wrapped toy, books, indoor/outdoor family games, gift cards for Domino's Pizza, Walmart, Southeast Cinemas - Surf Cinema (no more than $20 per gift card!) to our December 8 th Christmas dance and join us in helping to make Christmas better for a child here in Brunswick County! This dance will be held on Saturday, December 8 th at the OKI Moose Lodge. Thank you in advance!

N O V E M B E R T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 10 The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill - October 21 with DJ Ken Jones by Katy O Neill... Sunday, October 21 th was one of those beautiful early Autumn days-almost sweater weather. The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill welcomed the SOBS to an afternoon of oceanfront dancing. This, our first in a Sunday Series of Sunday afternoon dancing had DJ Ken Jones playing for our club for the first time. He and his wife Sandy said the drive down from Pender County was gorgeous even with the detours and closed roads. They, like so many of us SOBS love to dance, and everyone had a least one of their favorite songs to dance to over the course of the afternoon. Ken introduced the crowd to some new/old songs to include in future DJ requests. Both Ken & Sandy remarked at the beautiful view from The Lazy Turtle as they watched shrimpers and sail boats glide across the ocean while shag music drifted from the speakers. Sandy said, Y all are lucky to have such a scenic ocean front place to dance. A brief history of 601 Ocean Drive, OKI: as I recall here s a little back history of The Lazy Turtle, for those new to this iconic Oak Island Club. When John and I moved here permanently in 1998 the building was empty, it had housed a bar/club starting in the 70 s. A local friend who grew up in the now gone adjacent house told us that her family ran the establishment until it closed in the early 1990s. In 2005 or so, former Stingray s manager Lee Skipper put in a request for a liquor license to open Chaser s Beach Club at the location. The town council, leery of another bar opening on the island stipulated that the establishment was to provide a venue for beach music and boy, did it! Along with Rumor s at the Beach (gone for years now) beach bands had plenty of audiences for their music, and we had lots of opportunities to dance. In the early 2000s that little club hosted everybody from Jim Quick and Coastline to the Band of Oz and the Holiday Band. Bands lost to time like Mardi Gras, played there frequently. The SOBS shared costs with Lee to bring Sea Cruz for a semi private party for our shaggers. It was a popular spot for the local dance crowd, not just shaggers. The line dance, 2-step and the put your hands in the air and jump crowd all had fun. Lee s daughter Heather, a former student of mine from the 1980s, was all grown up, and the head bartender. Her Mom ran the day to day details. Chaser s didn t have a kitchen, but free hot dogs with all the fix in's frequently appeared. One of the first Operation Uplink events, then called Beach Music & Barbeque was held there. The SOBS held a Pig Pickin and then an oyster roast there. Hall of Fame Shaggers Jeppy McDowell and Judy Duke both came up from OD to offer shag lessons to our club members during those years. John and I began teaching free shag lessons at the club in the summer of In 2009 tragedy struck the Skipper family when Lee s grandson suffered a fatal accident. The Skippers continued to keep the club open for a while, but there were too many memories to overcome. Not long after he closed the club and moved away. In 2013, enter The Lazy Turtle. After several managers, we now have Theresa, an original employee, running the show and providing a venue for locals and visitors alike to drink in the view, enjoy a meal and a cold beverage. Local musicians often play there. They offer free breakfasts to Veterans on Sunday morning and has community events for all ages. This little club is a survivor! We ll look forward to the next Sunday Series dance with a view, and maybe a hotdog, too. On a personal note, Thank You for your generous tipping at Sunday s dance. Of the 6 employees on hand 3 were former students of mine, one with a 3-year-old son. She told me she had gotten behind on her car payment, missing work after the hurricane, but her Sunday tips would get her back on track. We SOBS are always looking to lend a hand in our community-you just never know who is benefitting from our fun.
