It seems like only yesterday I was president of the SOBS shag club (2007 & 2008). The club membership is strong and the financials are in good shape as we closed out 2017 with the Christmas party that was well attended. The food was good, the dancing was excellent, and DJ Jerry Burrage kept the dance floor full. I would be remiss if I didn t acknowledge the terrific job John Hutton has done the last two years as President of the club. His leadership has left the club in great shape. I also want to recognize Steve Smith and the great job he did as Treasurer. As we turn the page to 2018 I look forward to working with the new Board. John Hutton will remain on as the Vice President, Dennis Faver is our new Treasurer, the return of Cathy Banks as our Secretary, and Mr. Everything Joe Malinowski. We have a full slate of dances scheduled for 2018 as we kick off our first dance of the New Year on January 12 th at the OKI VFW and followed up with the return of our Sunday Series dances on January 21 st at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill. Our Re-Up / Join-Up dance party is scheduled for January 26 th at the OKI Moose Lodge. This is your opportunity to Re-Up your membership and to get your shagging friends to Join-Up with the SOBS! See page 4 for more information. As President, I can only hope to keep the momentum going and continue the good job that John has done. Our next board meeting is January 10 th at the VFW at 6 PM. Let us know if there are club issues that you would like to see us address. We hope to see you on the dance floor! January is the time to Re-Up / Join-Up your membership at our January 26 th Shag Dance held at the Oak Island Moose Lodge. DJ will be the legendary Fessa John Hook. See page 4 for more information! 3 J a n u a r y T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 3 Did you know New Year's was not always celebrated on January 1 st? (History.com) Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. Today, most New Year s festivities begin on December 31 (New Year s Eve), the last day of the Gregorian calendar, and continue into the early hours of January 1 (New Year s Day). Common traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year s foods, making resolutions for the new year and watching fireworks displays. Early New Year s Celebrations The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Akitu celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose: It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler s divine mandate was symbolically renewed. Did You Know? In order to realign the Roman calendar with the sun, Julius Caesar had to add 90 extra days to the year 46 B.C. when he introduced his new Julian calendar. Throughout antiquity, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice. January 1 st Becomes New Year s Day The early Roman calendar consisted of 10 months and 304 days, with each new year beginning at the vernal equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. A later king, Numa Pompilius, is credited with adding the months of Januarius and Februarius. Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today. As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, to honor the month s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year s Day in New Year s Traditions In many countries, New Year s celebrations begin the evening of December 31, New Year s Eve, and continue into the early hours of January 1. Revelers often enjoy meals and snacks thought to bestow good luck for the coming year. In Spain and several other Spanish-speaking countries, people bolt down a dozen grapes symbolizing their hopes for the months ahead right before midnight. In many parts of the world, traditional New Year s dishes feature legumes, which are thought to resemble coins and herald future financial success; examples include lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States. Because pigs represent progress and prosperity in some cultures, pork appears on the New Year s Eve table in Cuba, Austria, Hungary, Portugal and other countries. Ring-shaped cakes and pastries, a sign that the year has come full circle, round out the feast in the Netherlands, Mexico, Greece and elsewhere. In Sweden and Norway, meanwhile, rice pudding with an almond hidden inside is served on New Year s Eve; it is said that whoever finds the nut can expect 12 months of good fortune. Other customs that are common worldwide include watching fireworks and singing songs to welcome the new year, including the everpopular Auld Lang Syne in many English-speaking countries. The practice of making resolutions for the new year is thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made promises in order to earn the favor of the gods and start the year off on the right foot. They would reportedly vow to pay off debts and return borrowed farm equipment. In the United States, the most iconic New Year s tradition is the dropping of a giant ball in New York City s Times Square at the stroke of midnight. Millions of people around the world watch the event, which has taken place almost every year since Over time, the ball itself has ballooned from a 700-pound iron-and-wood orb to a brightly patterned sphere 12 feet in diameter and weighing in at nearly 12,000 pounds. Various towns and cities across America have developed their own versions of the Times Square ritual, organizing public drops of items ranging from pickles (Dillsburg, Pennsylvania) to possums (Tallapoosa, Georgia) at midnight on New Year s Eve.

4 J a n u a r y T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 4 Re-Up / Join-Up Shag Dance, January 26, OK fellow SOBS it s Re-Up / Join-Up time! Your membership in the SOBS runs from February 1 st thru January 31 st of the following year. Our January 26 th dance is your opportunity to Re-Up in the best Shag Club on the East Coast! The Re- Up / Join-Up fee will get you a year s membership, admission to the dance, and a meal. In addition, our DJ will be the legendary Fessa John Hook! To expedite the process for those members who are going to Re-Up, we will have a complete current membership list containing your 2017 information (Last/First Name, address, mailing address, phone number and birth date-no year!). A Membership Application for your friends is on the last page of this newsletter for their convenience. Checks should made out to the SOCIETY OF BRUNS- WICK SHAGGERS. As with most non-profit social clubs, volunteering is the backbone of our organization as well as a great chance to meet with the entire Membership. We ask our Members to step up for whatever small part you would like to play. The areas we always need volunteers are: HOSPITALITY responsible for greeting Members and Guests at the door of our dances. They take money in and check off Members/Guests at the door and direct questions (Membership, SOS Cards, etc.) to a SOBS Officer. They could also check on the Guests throughout the night and answer any questions. These people are our AMBASSADORS! COMMUNICATION anyone is welcome to write articles or submit pictures for our Newsletter/Website. Your experiences at events (dances, SOS, etc.) would certainly be welcome. Deadline for our Newsletter is the 25 th of the month. ENTERTAINMENT responsible for helping set up (decorate) and clean up at selected dances. These are important positions as we need to leave our venues as we found them and the Board Members do eventually tire of the tasks. SOCIAL volunteers to participate (dance or make costumes) in the SOS Parade in April, sell raffle tickets or procure items for auction at our Charity event, and to sell 50/50 tickets at our regular dance events. ANYTHING NEEDED This is the MEGA-VOLUNTEER who is available at most club functions. You can offer up your services at any event and as well as making yourselves available for last minute needs.

7 J a n u a r y T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 7 Club Communication Information... by Joe Malinowski Communications are an integral part of any organization. If you don t know what s going on, you miss many of the activities we do as a club. Currently, we have our website, a Facebook page, this newsletter and of course, the s I send to keep you as timely informed as possible of our events. Thankfully, we have for the most part a tech savvy membership. There are still a few holdouts, but somehow you find out what s happening in the club through friends you may have in the club. For outsiders looking to join a shag club or find a place to dance, our website and Facebook page are usually what they visit. But, these tools are only as good as they are current! One problem that I consistently faced was to keep all those media vehicles simultaneously current and synchronized for members and outsiders. So, at our last Board meeting we made a decision to change the website to be for the most part a static place for information. It has been changed to just include pages about us, the charities we support, our yearly dance schedule, links to our newsletter, and other shag related links. The only items that will be updated on our website (when necessary!) will be our dance calendar and adding newsletters as they are published. You, as SOBS members, will still continue to receive the most current information via this newsletter and timely s. SOBS Past President and original webmaster, Ken Koehly, created our Facebook page. Ken & I also talked about the club s use of Facebook and will take a closer look at how this may evolve for the club. We ll keep you posted as we progress. If you have any questions about our communications process, see me at our next dance... thanks! Visit our website at: LIKE us on FACEBOOK at: Show Your Club Logo... Hey SOBS! Before you know it, SOS Spring Safari will be here and we ll be mingling with a couple thousand of our closest SHAG friends in North Myrtle Beach. Not to mention all the fun of our club being in the SOS parade and the club Free Pour! You can now show your club colors & loyalty by having a personal item embroidered by fellow SOBS member, Beth Uhl. The logo is depicted here on the right and can be embroidered on polo shirts, button-up shirts, towels (like we don t sweat much during the Summer months!) and tote bags. The cost is only $15 and will be completed within 10 days to 2 weeks. Proudly wear our logo gear at SOS and other shag events! See Beth at one of our dances or contact her at (910) for pick-up and delivery options.

8 J a n u a r y T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 8 January DJ Information... Fellow SOBS Happy New Year! Where did 2017 go? We danced the year away! I am continuing my monthly articles about upcoming DJs. There will be a new DJ face later this year. Spinning the discs in the month of January will be: Friday, January 12 th - DJ Claude CC OKI VFW Sunday, January 21 st - DJ Tim The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill Friday, January 26 th - DJ Fessa John OKI Moose Lodge Our first dance of the New Year will be Friday, January 12 th at the VFW with DJ Claude CC Collins. Claude has been a Beach Music DJ for over 20 years and has played for our club many times. He was born and raised in North Carolina and currently lives in the North Myrtle Beach, SC area. He is one of the House DJ s at the landmark Ocean Drive Pavilion where he can be found playing great dance music during SOS. Let s start the New Year with a great night! Tim Holland will be playing for 2018 s first Sunday Series dance on January 21 st from 1-5 PM at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill oceanfront on Oak Island. This will be our first Sunday party of 2018, so come out and help make it a great afternoon of dancing on the beach. Tim and his wife Lisa live on Oak Island and he has played many of the venues in our area. They moved to Oak Island from Raleigh about 7 years ago. Tim appreciates all types of music, but says his greatest love is Beach Music. Tim likes to play a mix of old school R & B Shag and some of the releases of the current Beach Music bands. Tim was an Environmental Engineer and an accomplished musician with over 20 years in the US Army National Guard Band. Fessa John Hook will be playing at our January 26 th dance- the Annual Re-Up / Join-Up Party at the Moose. Fessa is one of the last of the Legendary DJs of Beach Music. John has been involved in Beach Music since the early 1970 s. He is the author of Shagging in the Carolinas which chronicles the history of Shag dancing and beach music. His publication include the 2 volume set Beach Music Guide, which contains extensive information on Beach Music artists and entries of over 26,000 beach music songs and other books on the history of Shag Dance and its associated bands over the years. He now syndicates three weekly radio shows on 58+ radio stations across the United States and has been affiliated with numerous radio stations through the years. He is now locally on 94.1 FM The Beach in Wilmington. His thorough knowledge of beach music has rightly earned him his nickname of Fessa. He has played our Operation Uplink party for many years. His presence at our Annual Re-Up / Join-Up Party will again make this an event to be remembered. Come rejoin the club. I would again like to thank you club members for your support of my 2 years as your club President. I look forward to seeing you at our club s dances and we hope to see you on the dance floor soon. John Hutton, DJ Selection
