1 2013 QUARTERLY UPDATE FREE LASC NEWSLETTER BUNNY AND HER BABY, ALWAYS A WONDER TO SEE MOTHER NATURE AT WORK... Mom s and their young always a Site... The newborn cria is remarkable in many ways. However, the neonatal period ( defined as the first weeks of life ) is the highest risk period of a llama or alpaca s life. These neonates are susceptible to hypothermia, hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, septicemia, and congenital defects. The owner and veterinarian must work together to maximize the crias ability to thrive. In our research in the Camelid Health Program at Ohio State University, we found that up to 36% of crias suffer some form of disease condition between birth and weaning, and that 2% of crias died before weaning. The most common disease conditions were diarrhea and infectious diseases. Crias born with difficulty were four times more likely to suffer a disease event. Crias born in the spring were least likely to suffer from diseases. This research data show how important neonatal health care is to survival and the ability to thrive of the cria. THE FIRST HOURS The first houirs of life are a special bonding period between the dam and the cria. During this period, minimal to no human contact is needed. Take time to be a good observer but do not interfere with the maternal bonding process. Observe the birthing process if possible, but do not interfere unless absolutely necessary. The cria should be born within 30 to 60 minutes of the onset of Stage II ( full strength contraction ) labor. The cria will appear disoriented at first and struggle to sit up within 5 to 15 minutes. UP AND STANDING
2 ! Presidents Message has been a busy time with The Indio Date Festival llama show and the March Magic Show already in the books. A great deal of thanks goes to our two outgoing board members, Pat Leighton and Tracey Wallace, for all the time and hard work they put into our organization over the last several years. Nanci Sutton and I have taken their place on the board and look forward to working with a very dedicated board and steadfast membership. The LASC Board of Directors has been busy planning for the year. We will be adding additional ranch meetings to our yearly schedule as well as other events that are in the forming stages. If you would like to host a meeting, please contact Nanci Sutton. As always, LASC is a long standing organization representing many camelid enthusiasts and interests. Please share your ideas with the board regarding an informative/fun orientated event you would like see held for the membership. This year we will be transitioning from our traditional hard cover membership directory to having the LASC website contain all membership information, services and advertisements. By making this contemporary shift, our organization will become extremely flexible and timely in posting a wide range of information easily accessible to the membership and public. We will also experience a substantial money savings in the process. Our LASC webmaster, Norma Stevens, is currently working on website format and gathering information. More details will be forthcoming shortly regarding website layout, service and advertisement information. To all, enjoy a fantastic year. Wally Baker
