Llama Association Of Southern California Issue Parents, Let your children grow up to be llama kids, because they will learn quickly and repeatedly that life isn t fair, and that hard work is often trumped by Lady luck, and that every defeat, no matter how terrible, is temporary. Let them dream big and move on. Let them learn confidence, grace and grit. Let them build big muscles and strong backs. Let your children grow up in the barn. Let them learn that buckets need filling and stalls need cleaned, even when it s raining, even when it s freezing, even when they have a different idea for how the day should go. Teach your children to drive trucks and trailers and atv s. Teach them to change a tire and wrap legs and give shots. Teach them respect for all living things. Let them grow up with llamas and with llama people, because it will teach them to be humble, and to be resilient and to be confident. Author unknown

October 26-28, 2018 ALSA Grand National Show of Champions Hutchinson, Kansas Halter/Performance Judges: Barb Harris, Margaret Henry Phil Feiner Fleece Judge: Joy Bishop-Forshey More information to come. February 2019 Riverside County Fair National Date Festival Judge: Jens Rudibaugh Show Superintendent: Kelly Secord Show Contacts: Lisa Labendeira Tracey Wallace Horse Trailer Axles Trailer axles have a lot riding on them, take good care of this crucial element of your rig. One of the more debilitating disablements for a horse trailer is axle failure. In addition to putting you and your animals at great danger on the side of the highway, axle failure presents an on the scene repair challenge. The main reason for servicing your trailer axles annually, even if you have not used your trailer in the past year, is that moisture can build up in an axle. This can cause the grease to become diluted and break down, rendering it unable to properly lubricate. Thus, it is important to perform this simple maintenance annually, even if you do not use your trailer often or at all. In addition to bearing failure, irregular axle maintenance can lead to axle damage, requiring the axle to be replaced, thereby turning an inexpensive maintenance procedure into a expensive repair. Make certain that your trailer axles are serviced annually, or every 12,000 miles. This requires taking your trailer to a trusted mechanic who will inspect the axle, replace any worn parts, and re-pack the bearings with high temperature bearing grease. This maintenance should be done even if your trailer has hubs that are equipped with grease fittings. Although the grease fittings will allow you to add more grease, they do not provide a means to remove old, moisture diluted grease. When adding grease, be very careful not to add too much and damage your grease seals. These seals keep oil or grease in and moisture out. If you experience axle failure, try to pull to a safe place, off the highway as far as possible.

History Of The Riverside County National Date Festival The Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival is located in Indio, California, an oasis situated in the vast California desert, approximately 130 miles east from Los Angeles. The fair started as a festival to celebrate the end of the annual harvest in the desert region, the major commercial date producing area in the western hemisphere. Dates were an unknown commodity in the desert until 1903 when date palms were transplanted there from Algeria. By the early 1920 s enough acreage was planted to make dates a major crop for the area. Date groves in the Coachella Valley were and still are such a novelty that they became quite a tourist attraction. With the popularity of the date garden, the idea was planted for the first Date Festival in 1921 to be held in Indio s city park. A second Festival was held the following year and then enthusiasm drifted off and the idea of an annual Date Festival died. It wasn t until 16 years later that the idea came forth again and the third Date Festival was held, this time the name of the name of Riverside County Fair and the Coachella Valley Date Festival, run by the Indio Civic Club, under contract from the County Board Of Supervisors. That year, there were 72 booths exhibited and attendance reached It was also the first year the street parade was staged. In 1936Western themes were in style and the fair took on a western theme complete with westerns cowboy hats and rodeo events. In 1940, the County bought the present fairgrounds. The County purchased 40 acres for $ Years later the grounds were expanded with the purchase of an additional 40 acres including the date grove on the fairgrounds. When all totaled, the fairgrounds now cover 120 acres. When World War II started, all fairs in California were halted. When the War ended, Robert M.C. Fullenwider was hired to manage the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival. Fullenwider envisioned an Arabian Nights theme tying in with the desert region and date industry. During the early years, building with an Arabic motif were constructed and within two years an Arabian Nights Pageant, Queen Scheherazade contest, National Horse Show and an expanded gem and mineral show were added.

Although many local people came forth to donate their time to the Fair, there were two individuals that made outstanding contributions - Louise Dardenelle, writer/artist, and Harry Oliver, a retired motion picture set designer. Both were intrigued with the Arabian Nights theme and Miss Darenelle conceived the idea for the first Arabian Nights Pageant and wrote the first script before she died in The late Harry Oliver designed and supervised construction of the Fair s outdoor stage. In 1964, Fullenwider retired as manager and was succeeded by Charles Wameling who had been his assistant for the three preceding years. The Arabian theme grew under the leadership of Wameling who still wanted to keep the mood of a county fair. In keeping with that idea, the date, citrus and community feature exhibits continued to grow. Charles Wameling retired in 1980 and Tom Ringhofer was hired to manage and guide the Fair into the 1980 s. Mr. Ringhofer strove to keep the traditions going from years past, booking note worthy talent as well as keeping the illusion of fantasy connected with the Fair intact..

Pope Francis Comes Face to Face with Shaggy Llamas in Middle of St Peter s Square Written permission from Rome The Telegraph By Nick Squires April 11, 2018 Pope Francis meet the llamas during his weekly audience in St Peter s Square at the Vatican Pope Francis came face to face with an unusual group of visitors from his homeland on Wednesday April 11,2018 three shaggy, full grown llamas. The animals and their handlers made an appearance at the Argentinian pontiff s weekly audience in St Peter s Square at the Vatican after completing a 650 mile pilgrimage, on foot, from the far north of Italy. Llamas live in the Andes of South America, including on the Argentinian side of the mountain range. The three that made it to Rome belong to the Kaserhof alpaca and llama farm in Italy s German speaking South Tyrol province, close to the border with Austria. They trekked to Rome with their owners and two friends, all three of them Catholics who had long dreamed of embarking on a pilgrimage to the Vatican. The three men, with the llamas in tow, were able to shake the Pope s hand during the general audience, and then gave him gifts a papal skull cap, or papalina in Italian, and a pair of socks made from alpaca wool.

The llamas, named Buffon, Shaqiri and Tiento, attracted a great deal of interest on their journey, which was documented with photographs posted on Facebook. They followed the Via Romea Germanica, a medieval pilgrimage route that starts in Germany and winds through Austria and Italy to Rome. With a herd of 180 animals, the Kaserhof is the largest llama and alpaca farm in Italy. I had been thinking of a pilgrimage for about 15 years and then Pope Francis, an Argentine, was elected,, Mr Mair said. At the end of last year I decided that I would finally do it, and two friends decided to come with me. We took time off work and planned the trip. They set out from South Tyrol in February, walking up to 20 miles a day. We were greeted with hospitality and a welcoming spirit. We were invited to stay at a number of monasteries on the route and also on private farms. The llamas need to graze and rest. The pilgrims and their llamas are due to return home this week, but by truck, rather than retracing their route on foot.

International Lama Registry Your Help Is Needed Llamas Banned from BLM Lands in Alaska Summited By Kathy Virgo On Monday, January 8, 2018 the ILR wrote: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has banned the use of pack llamas in Alaska s Eastern Interior Resource Management Area (EI-RMA). Some Alaska National Park Services (NPS) management units attempted this 3 years ago. When we asked for your help so many of you commented that the NPS pack llama ban was withdrawn. Once again, your help is needed. Then EI-RMA pack llama ban was approved because the notification process required by the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) was ineffective. The notification process did not make an effort to target the llama industry, llama organization, llama outfitters, or pack llama users. The EIS ultimately determined that pack llamas should be prohibited because they could transmit disease to wild sheep, a claim that is unsubstantiated. BLM received little or no input objecting to their proposal because their notification process was so ineffective. Per the EIS, Allowing the use of domestic sheep, goats, or llamas/camelids in and near Dall sheep habitats could result in substantial risks to health and productivity of Dall sheep populations through disease transmission. The main basic of this BLM decision is a Canadian publication, Garde, E., et al Examining the Risk of Disease Transmission between Wild Dall Sheep and Mountain Goats and Introduced Sheep, Goats, and Llamas in the Northwest Territories. This Canadian publication presents hypothetical risk scenarios and at the same time discredits itself by stating there is insufficient data available to clearly assess the role of camelids as a source of disease. BLM did not make diligent effort to seek or acknowledge the science published by (or the opinions of) camelid disease experts in the United States (US) and elsewhere. The extensive reservoir of US scientific information authored by these experts presents overwhelming evidence contrary to BLM s supposition that pack llamas are a disease threat. BLM failed to identify or address ant of that information. Instead BLM cites only the Canadian publication and an Alaska Chapter of

The Wildlife Society position statement that references that same publication. The International Llama Registry (ILR) is not aware of any other state or federal agencies in the US that prohibit pack llamas based on a threat of disease transmission. The NPA, for example, evaluated the same Canadian publication but drew just the opposite conclusion to allow pack llamas on NPA administered lands. The history of previous lawsuits & settlements relating to pack llamas on US federal lands and the existing federal land EIS s that support pack llama use were not evaluated by BLM. Special interest groups such as The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) have an agenda to persuade public land agencies to prohibit pack llamas on public lands. WSF maintains that a pack llama ban is necessary to curtail the transmission of disease to wild sheep. Ironically, science has shown that llamas are less likely to transmit disease to wildlife than horses or mules, the very animals that BLM and the WSF consider to be the preferred species. The danger that we now face is that other government agencies will soon follow BLM s lead in a domino effect. Will the lower 48 states be next? Mention: *Proper National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) procedures were not followed as to affirmatively solicit comments from the llama industry nor make diligent efforts to involve the llama industry in preparation of the Environmental Impact Study (EIS). Our user group (llama packers), has been arbitrarily eliminated from AK-Eastern Interior BLM managed lands. This is our public land. Therefore, we request an amendment to eliminate the restrictions on pack llamas. No existing previously documented federal EIS s and/or general use policies allowing pack l lamas (based upon little to no disease transmission threat), were reviewed. Other federal land management agencies that completed similar EIS s that also considered the issue of disease transmission from llamas to wild sheep, determined that llamas so not pose a threat, and allowed access for the general public and commercial use of pack llamas. Those determinations were the exact opposite of the Alaska Eastern Resource Management Plan Final EIS determination. Other Interior Department legal settlement agreements were nit considered. You might also comment/request: Llamas are much easier on the environment than horses and mules, and pose no more of a disease transmission threat than horses or mules. No one has ever documented the transmission of disease from llama to another species of animal, wild or domestic. BLM has categorized llamas with sheep and goats as a substantial disease risk.

This reflects BLM s basic ignorance of the tylopod family. Strong species barriers make llamas far less likely to transmit disease to wild sheep than more closely related domestic sheep and goats. BLM s pack llama determination of substantial risk if applied to all equally would have to include a ban of humans, dogs, and horses in Dall sheep habitat. What BLM has really defined is a zero risk policy and there is no such thing as zero risk. The wishes of the locals & private hunters were not considered. Explain that most all of the federal land jurisdictions, including the BLM, have been successfully allowing llamas for over 40 years and doing so with no problems. For example, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has been using pack llamas for park maintenance for more than 30 years. RMNP has sensitive wild sheep habitat. If this ban is successful, there could be repercussions with llamas being banned in other areas of the country. Sincerely, International Lama Registry Board of Directors
