2 ************************************************************** A dairy farmer wrote in with the question: Is it really worth paying more for the more expensive buck? Scott wrote back, in Spring 2016: The answer is I don t know. Here is one dollar and cents approach I thought of. There are 16 99th %ile does. The average PTAM of those 16 is 333. There are 16 95th %ile does. The average PTAM of those 16 is 230. So it looks like for every one percentile drop the milk goes down by 26 pounds. HENOOSKI had a dam with a PTAM of a 93 so that would be 7 percentiles down from HAN SHOT FIRST. 26 pounds times 6 percentiles = 156 lb /year. So that would mean on average his daughters will give you 156 less pounds every year, year after year. And his granddaughters will give you one - half of 156 pounds year after year. So if you are milking 80, then 80 x 26 x 7 x.41/pound = $5, does x 156 pounds = 12,480 pounds per year. 12,480 pounds per $40cwt = $4, years of milk from each doe equals $24,960. That s my guess. ****************************************************************************** A lot of work needs to be done to make this computation more accurate. First, what about the granddaughters and great granddaughters? Nothing was added to the $24,960 for them. Second, probably starting by comparing the 99 th percentile to the 95 th percentile is not right. Because the 99 th percentile will have a few that are REALLY crazy for milk. So, if we found 16 does in 85 th percentile and averaged their milk (PTAM). Then subtracted that number from 230, which is the average for the 16 in the 95 th percentile. That would give us the drop for 10 percentiles. Dividing that by 10 would probably give us a more accurate figure than 26 pounds per percentile.

3 TESTIMONIALS The Caprikorn does are amazing. They so out class the rest of the herd it s not funny. -Trent Hendricks, MO A big congratulations to your TOP TEN DOES last year. I keep reading on and on and kept seeing all your listed. Yea Caprikorn! -Tom & Roni, CA We have 144 CAPRIKORN HOT SAUCE daughters. The YEARLINGS from him tower over a lot of the older does. Keith from New England We LOVE our Caprikorn Farm goats they are not only very productive, they are lovely personalities smart, but not overly pushy. -Bedford Blueberry Goat Farm, MA I would say you are probably the top herd in the nation now with those classification scores and that milk production. Janelle Anderson, 30-year Saanen Breeder, NE Our KID ROCK daughters are milking 10 pounds at 10 months of age! Emanual Schneider, PA By the way, HOT ROD is doing great. His girls have had their first kids. He definitely improved our genetic pool. Andrea Gauvreau, Quebec Scott, bought seven does from OK. Had never seen such milk or quality in a goat herd. When asked about the genetics he said they were Caprikorn. They are doing 18 pounds a day. The yearlings are doing 13 pounds a day. -Thomas Childress, Hereford Breeder, TX I am overly pleased with EARTHMAN and the improvements that I can already see that he has made to our farm. -Wendy, Bootleg Farm, GA My name is Shereen and I bought a buck from you a couple years ago. Fantastic buck - I love this buck! - Shereen Wilcox, PA We have 105 does..just so you know the Caprikorns are the nicest and largest ones. We can always pick them out just by looking at them. -Lori Lyons, WI Dear Scott, that is some Sales List! I know your goats are the BEST! -Brad Parker, Pipe Dreams Fromage, PA Hey Scott, I got to milk some of your best goats when Alice was here; was impressed! -Levi Peterscheim, IA The Caprikorn girls are doing FANTASTIC! They are exceeding our expectations. They are always coming in with full bags and they don t want to slow down production very quickly when it is time to start drying up. -Jared Rebling, Brighton, IA AMBER is a milk machine. I appreciate the temperament of all your goats; they are so nice and loving! -Scarlett Payne, Utica, OH A lot of the ones we have from your bucks freshened at 11 months and they re just fantastic. -Keith Tifft, VT DILL and DYLEX are amazing, and as milking yearlings were amazing also... -Lila Streff, SD I appreciate that you are willing to refund our deposits; we have decided to back out of all 11 dairy goat kids. - Trisha Bickel, Hamburg, PA I have appraised all the major Saanen herds and you have the best feet and legs. -Linear Appraiser, American Dairy Goat Assn., 2013 I am so very glad to be able to work with you as you are one of the most reliable and honest goat breeders I know. It is such a pleasure to have complete confidence in a purchase to know that it will be totally as represented. -Teddy West, OH *************

4 The 95 th percentile does average 243 per PTAM. The 98 th percentile does average 302 per PTAM. Increase of 59 pounds per year. There are 3 percentage points between 95 & 98. Therefore each percentile translates into 20 pounds of milk per doe per year. So, for example, if you have a normal non-tested herd, that MIGHT be 40 th percentile. If you use 90 th percentile bucks, you move up by 1,000 pounds per doe per year. (20 pounds times 50 percentiles) If you are getting $539 cwt, your income goes up by $39,000 for every 100 does you milk.

He is a fundamental part of our breeding program. His sister went for 2,600 and his brother went for 2,395 So Alice jacked up the price because she would like to have a ROCKET son for a change. All the others were bought This was an awesome lookinng baby buck. He had that sweeping look judge s love, starting from high sharp withers, traveling back along straight topline to a very good rump angle, being lower in the rump than the withers. Then he became a yearling. Our yearling bucks are ugly. One place Scott can fault him is the rump could be wider. Secondly, ZURICH has a slight minus for PTAFS. Cobalt is plus for type. His PTAM, PTAF and PTAP% would make him about the equivalent of 95%ile. But although he has 24 registered dau s none have ever been on a test in a DIFFERENT herd than CAPRIKORN. So he does not print on the Top Buck (cdcd.us) or Elite Buck lists. IT IS RARE FOR A 95th %ILE BUCK TO ALSO BE POSITIVE FOR TYPE. D: CAPRIKORN COBALT KARISMA KARISMA SHOWN ONCE, Jr Champion in both rings May 26 Karisma shown again, KARISMA 5th of 29 at National Show! DDS: SG MERCIO +*B When we bought him, he had a LOT of classified dau s forming a well established PTA FS of plus 0.8, similar to KAHUNA and ALOHA. But (thank god) he was also 80th percentile for milk/fat/protein, similar to KRUGERRAND and VOICE OF REASON. He has since dropped slightly to PTAFS +0.7 and 77th percentile. As future breeding occur, the show string has a way of infecting the main herd, which is all about BIG MILK. So, when that inevitable crossbreeding happens in the future, he won t ruin the milk/fat/protein in the main herd. DD: CAPRIKORN MERCIO ELEGANCE 1*M Last year we said No LA because no RE tattoo.
