3 PRESIDENTS......Jim Aspaas & Mary Presidents report Sept 2017 My favourite poem is the one that starts 'Thirty days hath September' because it actually tells you something. Groucho Marx The sad day has come and by now all of you members have received a letter (see copy in newsletter) with the details of the reasons that our wonderful square dance club might cease. We are saddened to think that we will probably be the last presidents of the Rustlers. Please consider attending the General meeting on Sept. 17 th so that you can vote on what to do; fold, merge or be a Caller run club. We have been approached by one club who wants to become Rustlers and have met with another club. Only time will tell and we are hopeful that something wonderful may happen. Life does go on and with that, we will continue to offer our gratitude to so many of you who have continued to support the dances and activities of the club. Thanks to Florence, who opened her lovely home for the August Board meeting, games and then, a delicious turkey dinner/pot-luck and organized a Musical fundraiser on Sept. 10 th. You won t want to miss this delightful play, Catch Me if You Can. Special thanks to Janie & Rick who wear so many Rustlers hats. They book all our visitations to other club dances, plan yummy refreshments following club dance themes and do set-up and take-downs at all of the dances in spite of Rick s bad back. We sure appreciate their support along with our best Secretary, Linda, and Corresponding Secretary, Vel. The Baldwins and Roots continue to do anything and everything along with Carol, our V-P. The Betz may be traveling this summer, but they don t stop taking care of the club s finances. If you see our ads in the Blue Book and other publications, you can thank Bubbles/Alice for her on-going efforts too. We are thankful to all. We decided to share a little of our non-square dancing life with you. There are a number of photos of some of our other interests and hobbies. Jim has constructed seven electric guitars and basses and plays them in a band who performed at the OC Fair. His original band from 1968, The Innkeepers, cut a record and went on tour. We invite you to go to Huntington Beach Central Park this coming Labor Day weekend, to see Civil War Reenactment battles, hear President Lincoln and dance to period music. Come visit us at the 69 th New York State Volunteers/ Irish Brigade unit in the Union Camps. We love giving school presentations and teaching others about this sad and interesting period in our history that is getting much press recently. We hope that this little introduction to our other lives, will bring you some cheer at this sad time. With Hugs & Blessings, Mary & Jim, Your Presidents P.S. You ve now heard that we were hit by a car and pushed into a truck on our way to the dance 8/26. Jim got the worst of it with a fractured rib & vertebra & we both have lots of bruises that will heal. 4 LINDA ROSA OUR FEATURED RUSTLER FOR SEPTEMBER Have you ever visited Piscataway, NJ? It s only 35 miles from New York City and was founded in 1666, growing from Indian Territory. Well, our fabulous secretary, Linda Rosa, was born and raised there and graduated from Rutgers University which is also located in this relatively smaller community. So how did a Jersey Girl end up in California dancing with the Rustlers? Linda and her husband moved here with their only daughter for work. Long after she became a widow, she found about square dancing through a website, Meet-Up which is used to find people/groups who have common interests. She already loved the Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, a little Ballroom, Latin dancing and some Country Western, so she decided to try a new dance form in Jan She was warned that square dancing would change her life, and it has; she has new friends, a community of support, and people who are helpful, friendly and joyful. Linda loves cooking all kinds of meals and side dishes, but not baking. Her favorite foods are Italian, Asian, especially Cantonese, and Mexican. Her first love is ballet but she has many other interesting hobbies in addition to dancing. She is a hiker and her goal is to hike Mt. Whitney. She has loved traveling, especially to Portugal and Paris and has many other destinations on her bucket list, including Italy, New Zealand, Venezuela, Hong Kong and an Alaskan cruise. The most exciting memory was when her hubby took her to Ausable Chasm, The Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks. You will have to Google this gorgeous natural wonder in upstate, NY to get a taste of it. Linda s proudest moment was when her daughter graduated with her master s degree in Remote Sensing, a phenomenon that allows scientific studies from a distance like erosion on a beach through mapping. It all sounds amazingly interesting. Daughter, Melissa and her hubby live in San Francisco with Linda s Grand Dog. Linda has being doing a fantastic job as a two term club secretary and has the most positive, gracious attitude and smile. Years ago she taught school while back East. Now she plans to give back by tutoring Spanish after her retirement. That would ring true knowing that her life s philosophy is to be always grateful and willing to give more than to receive. We thank you, Linda, for your giving spirit as our wonderful Rustlers Secretary. Rustlers Roundup Page 4

5 .....Janie Moore After the Sept. General meeting, the Board will decide whether to hold this Yard Sale. It takes a huge amount of work and the club needs more than just the Board to pull it off. Until a decision is made about folding the club, merging, etc., which will be based on your vote, please continue saving all of your gently used stuff for our Club s Annual Fund Raiser. When: Sat. 9 August 15, 2017 Dear Rustlers, It is with heavy hearts that the time has come to consider folding our Rustlers Square Dance Club. We will be celebrating our 50 th Anniversary on Saturday, January 28 th, This will probably be our final dance. You are strongly encouraged to attend a General Meeting on Sunday, September 17 th at 2 p.m. followed by a chili dinner pot-luck at 4 p.m. with a short Board Meeting in between. At the General Meeting, the club will vote on the future of the Rustlers; to fold, to merge with another club or to be taken over by Square Dance Caller(s). If you are unable to attend, please send the absentee ballot below for your much needed input. At the Board Meeting of August 13 th, 2017, the following information was provided to the 11 members in attendance: 1. There are 54 current members. 2. Five years ago, there were almost twice the number of members members are inactive members are active of which 16 are Board members. 5. Only two of the Board members are wanting to continue on the Board. 6. The Board is tired and most are doing multiple positions along with the set-up, take-down, serving of refreshments, etc., at our dances. 7. The majority of the Board are moving out of state and/or are unable to continue in their roles. 8. The many social activities and fund-raising events are poorly supported and attended by the club. 9. The Club cannot afford to begin a new class due to costs related to room rental and caller fees. The last class was stopped due to these financial reasons. 10. Our recent classes have not been sufficiently supported with participation by the membership. 11. Without new membership from classes, we cannot continue as a functioning club. 10 [continue] On Sept. 17 th, we will all vote whether to fold, merge or be taken over as a Caller Club. The details have not been worked out, but a number of clubs will have been contacted by the time the meeting occurs, to determine the feasibility of a merge. Possibly, there may not be a club willing to merge with the Rustlers. Thank you for your input. Do not hesitate to contact us with your ideas or comments. We are hosting the General meeting on Sept. 17 th at our home, Hague Ln., Huntington Beach, 92647, and ask that you RSVP so that we can be prepared. You will receive another invitation/reminder from Vel via prior to the meeting. If you are unable to attend, please return the ballot that is at the end of the letter.
