I almost cannot believe it. So much to do and so little time. I could spend all day here at the office pounding away on new ideas and endless possibilities. I am extremely excited to see what 2015 will bring for KVLS and the Fair. We had a great Committee Chairman meeting in September. It was wonderful to get with those of you who are brave enough to take the reins of our various committees and discuss different ideas, concerns, and most importantly, the extreme value of TEAMWORK! Whether you are a Committee Chair, new to KVLS or somewhere in the middle, we cannot do it without you! All of the pieces of the puzzle must come together, to not only make our fair successful, but to launch it to the next level. We are on the horizon of some amazing things and I hope all of you will come along for the ride. It is going to take hardwork and YEAR-ROUND support, but I know together we can achieve. Over the past few months we have held several events here on the grounds including two circuses, birthday parties, many workshops, and the Paso Fino competition. 2 Blue Ribbon News Fall 2014 Page 2 Manager s Update, cont. such as the Back to School Expo and Discover Osceola. Our off-season exposure continues to grow and that is a wonderful thing. We are always looking for ways to get out an about and spread the message about our organization and the many, many different things we do. In the coming months we will need helpers for the Veterans Day Parade as well as both the Kissimmee and St. Cloud Christmas Parades. Please watch your updates for times and more details. Whether you can give an hour or ten, your help is always truly appreciated. fun to learn more. In addition to several informative classes, the group had the opportunity to visit the State Fair of Texas. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and it certainly was awesome to see, but it was still great to return home to Florida and get back in the groove of planning our own exciting, bigger, and better fair! Finally, if you have not heard through the grapevine, Steve and I are happy, nervous, excited, and perhaps even a bit crazy to be expecting our first baby around the 1st of May. Our KVLS Family has been just as ecstatic and ready to support us, as our family I just returned from the International back in Illinois and we cannot thank Association of Fairs and Expos you enough. We are blessed to have a educational Institute Summit in strong support system here, especially Dallas, Texas. It was great to meet new having only been here for such a short individuals from across the U.S. and Canada. There were even representatives time. A big thank you to all of you for celebrating our news with us now, later there from the Alaska State Fair. It is amazing the differences and similarities for bearing with me during fair time when I might need a little extra help, of fairs across the globe and it is always Welcome Back Expo, Miranda with Little Miss Silver Spurs Brighton Mick & her court and finally next summer when we start looking for a baby sitter from time to time. KVLS will provide meat, drinks and cake. Members are asked to bring a side dish. Our regular membership meeting will begin at 7PM. SOMETING TO OINK ABOUT Baby Show Gets a New Age Group and New Name Win Money! Only $10 Entry Fee Cash Awards & Plaques! Entry Deadline: Friday, January 16, 2015 by 4 pm in the Fair Office or postmarked by Thursday, January 15, Kissimmee Valley Lane Kissimmee, FL The Fair Baby Show is now the Baby earts Pageant. The name was changed due to the addition of the 4 year old age category. Contestants ages 1, 2, 3 & 4 year olds compete in Personality and Western Wear. Trophies and ribbons are awarded to winners. There is a $10 entry fee, with a limit of ten boys and ten girls in each age group. Applications will be available after January 27th, 2015 at KVLS Office. 4 Blue Ribbon News Fall 2014 Page 4 SOMETING TO CROW ABOUT Sharon Beam wins Star Volunteer of the Quarter Award Sharon is an outstanding volunteer who is always willing to help any committee that needs help during the Fair. She helps with the lamb, round robin and auction committee to name just a few. Sharon also helps with the ribbons and trophies. This is a huge job considering the number of shows and events that take place during the Fair. During the off-season, she comes in to help in the KVLS office. She puts in many hours organizing spread sheets and order forms as well as handling misc. projects as needed. As the Volunteer of the Quarter, Sharon won a $ Cash card and plaque. Entry deadline: Dec. 13, 2014 Victoria Cowen, Miss Florida 2014 NEW OPPENINGS KVLS Adds Junior Board In an effort to recruit and develop leadership within our organization, a new Junior Board has been formed. Members will attend regular board meetings, assist with various Fair events and are encouraged to participate in the Florida Federation of Fair s Young Professionals Initiative. Kevin Kersey, 25, is a teacher at St. Cloud Preparatory Academy. e teaches Sixth Grade English, Language Arts and World istory. Kevin grew up in the Fair showing hogs and citrus trees. e served in various leadership positions within his Osceola Aggies 4- Club, and County Council. e has worked the past few years for Moreno Ranches, who host the Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show. As a KVLS member, Kevin has served as the Co-Chair for the Alumni Committee, along with serving on the Steer Committee, Buyer s Committee, Citrus Committee and Scholarship Committee. When asked about what he hopes to achieve as a Junior board member, Kevin replied, I would like to bring more prospect shows to KVLS during the off season. I would really like to see a Swine and Goat show to occur in either December or January to give our youth practice for showmanship and an opportunity for premier exhibitor points. This would also allow youth from outside the county to have the same experience and hopefully will encourage others to use the venue for other events and/or attend our fair. I also want to help create ways to reach our growing ispanic population within the county. Ashley Avant was born and raised in and currently reside in Saint Cloud. 5 Page 5 Fall 2014 Blue Ribbon News The 2nd Annual KVLS Trunk or Treat will be held Sunday, October 26th, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 PM. Last year s inaugural event was fun for everyone and we want to make this year s event better, but we need your help! Can you bring a trunk? At least 10 trunks are needed to make the event worthwhile. Make it fun, feel free to decorate, and fill your car with goodies and candy for the kids to enjoy. UPCOMING EVENTS Earn Community Service ours While elping with Truck or Treat This Sunday Veteran s Day Parade November 8, 10:00 AM The KVLS is entering the Veteran s Day Parade again this year. Please consider walking with us as we honor our veterans and distribute Fair information and candy to the crowd. This is another opportunity for students to earn community service hours. Contact: Judy erstich , mm1988@ comcast.net. KVLS Christmas Float Meeting Thursday, November 6, 6:00 PM at KVLS The St. Cloud Parade theme is ome for the olidays. Please bring your ideas to this planning meeting. Dinner will be provided. RSVP: Judy erstich Volunteer! We will need individuals to assist with games, beverages, prizes, and more. The KVLS office will gladly fill out community service forms for volunteers. If you d like to participate, please the KVLS Office kvls@osceolacountyfair. com Veteran s Day Parade in Kissimmee New Junior KVLS Board, cont. Extension Office as a Program Assistant for the Family Nutrition Program. She is also a full time student working on her Agricultural Education degree. She has been a KVLS member for the past four years and currently serves on the Market Steer, Membership, and Auction Committees. Prior to becoming a KVLS member, she was a Fair exhibitor through 4- and FFA. The Fair has always been part of her life. She spent twelve years as a member of the 4- Program, and three years in armony FFA. She showed market steers, market hogs, and goats. Ashley considers these experiences as lifelong lessons that she will cherish and carry with her the rest of her life. As a Junior Board Member, Ashley says, I would like to explore different ideas on how to get a higher number of 4- and FFA alumni to become KVLS members and be more involved with the Fair. I am also looking forward to working with the board members and learn more about the KVLS Organization.
