1 March, 2015 Relay For Life of Norlanco CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF RELAY Introducing the 2015 Relay For Life of Norlanco Honorary Survivors and Honorary Caregivers We save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. We are blessed this year to have two Honorary Survivors and two Caregivers. At our Rally on March 10 th, we heard from Cheryl Ackley, a breast cancer survivor. Her story is powerful and it has a familiar ring to it as she related the cancer stories of her parents, leading up to her own cancer journey. Matthew Sanger has been the principal at Garden Spot since He is a survivor of testicular cancer and he too has a powerful story to tell. We are hoping to have Matthew at the Rally in May at Garden Spot, so we can hear his story first-hand. We all followed the story of Amber Martin as she fought her battle with cancer. What a courageous young woman she was and we could all learn a lot from her faith and positivity! We are blessed to have her mother, Angela Hurst, and sister, Alecia Martin as our Honorary Caregivers this year. We want to celebrate our survivors birthdays!! Happy Birthday to:

2 Can You Believe It? We ll be heading back to the 1980s in just 3 months That s Totally Crazy! As your experience lead, I along with the luminaria, entertainment/activities and logistics committees are working hard to make this year s Relay Totally Awesome! Joanne is preparing a great luminaria ceremony, which is one of the important aspects of Relay. The ceremony is an opportunity for each of us to remember those we lost, to reflect on our own or loved ones cancer experience and to find hope that tomorrow holds the promise of a cancer free world. If you haven t purchased your luminaries, you ll want to do that soon. You can purchase them online or obtain forms at the next Rally. Let s light up the track as we Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back! Marissa has many activities planned to keep us entertained. Activities like themed laps that include a crazy eighties dress up contest and lap, and even a human Pac Man game. An entertainment/activity schedule will be available at the April 7th Rally. Your logistics committee, which includes Bill, Jeff, Lisa and myself, along with assistance from Deb Bock are working behind the scenes to make sure we ve got everything covered. We are most excited about the change to tent decorating and relay alley, now referred to as The Mall. At the April 7th Rally, you ll have the opportunity to select your tent sites. Tent site selection, includes The Mall, Tent City and RV parking. The logistics committee asks that you come prepared to let us know if you will need tent(s) in The Mall area either for decorating, fundraising or both. Please remember The Mall tent sites can be no larger than 12 x 12. We will also need to know tent city and RV dimensions. If you are not able to attend the April Rally, please send me an dsmart@dejazzd.com, letting me know if you plan to participate in The Mall and the dimensions of your Tent City tents or RV, and we ll reserve your site. Regards, Donna S., Experience Lead The Mall is a combination of tent decorating and relay alley. These activities will take place on the infield around the track. Your team can choose to participate in decorating, relay alley or both or not participate in either. If you participate in tent decorating we re asking that you create a store based on items sold in the 80s. For instance a candy store, record store, toy store, jewelry store, clothing store, etc. The items in your store can be made out of cardboard, foam, paper, etc. You can continue to do raffles, dime toss, etc. in the Mall the only change is that you will be doing both decorating and relay alley all in the same tent space. We will allow up to 1 additional space per team, if needed. Tent space in this area is 12 x 12. If you re thinking of how to decorate, please keep in mind that the school does not want us to place any flooring on the grass in this area. 3 Mission Moment I m sure everyone has heard of the Ronald McDonald House already. When you think about, see or hear about the Ronald McDonald House you hear about it being a home away from home for families with sick children. Well, Hope Lodge is the exact same thing only for cancer patients and their caregivers. Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregiver s a free place to stay when their treatments maybe in another city. While staying there, patients & their caregivers can stay in a nurturing, home-like environment where they can retreat to private rooms or spend time with others. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging, allows guests to concentrates on getting well. What we d like to do at Relay this year to bring attention to Hope Lodge and all they do for patients & their families is set up a corner in the big tent with cots, sleeping bags, blankets and chairs along with some snacks to give a feel of Hope Lodge at our Relay. When you stop by, you can sit for a bit or even grab a short snooze or just use a little quiet time to reflect on why you relay. There are 2 Hope Lodges in Pa. one in Hershey and one in Philadelphia. You can find more information on cancer.org if you re interested. On another note, look for a sign up sheet for the Road to Recovery event at this years Relay. Road to Recovery Race sign up. This is a fun Saturday Mission-Fight Back event that recognizes our volunteers by transporting a patient safely through obstacles. Miss Relay Competition sign up. How LOVELY can he get? How many donations can he get? The guys are great sports and we all have fun. The winner? Always a surprise! Luminaria Readers sign up. We are asking team captains or their designate to help us during the Luminaria service on Friday evening as we Remember and Honor loved ones. This is another wonderful way to be a special part of our Relay. Haircut sign up. All hair from the cut will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths

6 Survivor Scoop ADOPT A TABLE FOR THE SURVIVOR DINNER! The Survivor Committee is asking teams to adopt a table (or two) for the Survivor Dinner on Friday, June 19 th at Relay. Your team can decorate the table in the 80 s theme and the items will be given to the survivors as door prizes. Tables should be decorated by approximately 3:00pm on Friday afternoon. If you have items that should be returned just let the committee know. Don t forget, there are children who are survivors, so your table might be aimed at them. The ideas are limitless. The team who turns in the most Sponsors will win a pizza party, and the other winner will be the team that collects the most in Sponsorship dollars! The Challenge will run until our April 7th Rally, so go out there and ASK!!!! Ask your hairdresser, your dentist or your child s orthodontist, ask your mechanic, or how about that favorite restaurant you enjoy? 9 Great Fundraising Opportunity On May 1st, 2015, the Barnstormers and ACS/Relay for Life will be partnering for a night painted purple. That evening, we will be honoring Cancer survivors with events before, during and after the game. All Lancaster area Relays are invited to participate and your team can raise money by selling ticketsto the game. This will be the first time EVER that all 6 RFL events will come together for one event. There are also 20 tables available along the outer concourse for your team to share information and fundraise. Those tables are assigned on a first come, first serve basis and can be reserved starting January 5, Also, for the team that sells the most Barnstormers tickets, they will be able to use the table in the main concourse of the stadium in the area around the food vendors. Barnstormer s Fundraiser - Additional Details By completing an interest form for the Barnstormer Event, you ll receive promo cards with a specific code for your team. Each ticket purchase will need this promo code for your team to receive credit. Ticket price is $12.00 and you ll receive a $4.00 credit per ticket sold. Tickets can also be sold at the game up until 4:00p.m. Remember, the ticket purchaser needs the promo code for your team to receive credit. Help Spread the Word! Here are some of the event details: First 1,000 attendees will receive a luminaria bag with a glow stick and info sheet on all the area Relays/ ACS. Teams can have a table and fundraise through the entire game. There will be a Pre-Game Survivor Lap and during the game Miss Relay Contestants will be announced. At the conclusion of the game, everyone will be invited onto the field with their bag and glow stick. Lights will be turned out for a luminaria ceremony.
