1 Year 84 Week 27 June 29, 2012 July 9, 2012 Program: Debunking Marc Winter, or A Lyin about Winter DoubleTree Hotel 555 W. Foothill Blvd. Claremont, CA Fridays, 12:10 PM Website Full Color editions of this newsletter and back issues are always available on our Clarifier Committee Cameron Troxell Suzanne Hall Karen Sapio Steve Schenck, Photographer Carley Haro Buff Wright Sergeant John Allen Today s meeting primarily involved the debunking of outgoing President Marc Winter. Past-President John Tulac served as the Master of Ceremonies and composed the skits that were acted out by a motley cast of characters, including Buff Wright, Jerry Tambe, Paul Steffen, Bernadette Kendall, Bonita Ramos, Marla Lefler, Pat Hauducoeur, and Cameron Troxell. The theme of the debunking, taken from the title of the movie A Lion in Winter, was A Lyin About Winter. For the first skit, Marc was brought into the room, dressed as a cowgirl, because of a comment in an he had sent to John Tulac earlier in the year. He played the role of the King of England, and was further dressed up by the Ladies of the Royal Court, who adorned him with Mardi Gras necklaces, feathers, and a hat. The second skit first involved an advisor to the King (Jerry Tambe) and a French Ambassador (Paul Steffen). Marc was crowned, and an alternate version of the Welcome Song was played to welcome the ambassador. Marc was then asked to sing Smile in French, which disturbed the ambassador. Next, the issue of Marc missing some meetings this past year was invoked with a version of Where s Waldo, called Where s Marc? Marc was shown some photos and asked to find himself in them. Next came a song recalling certain instances of Marc s year, entitled Walking in a Winter Blunderland. On-screen lyrics (see below) were provided so that the entire club could join in. Because Marc started out his year interviewing longtime club members, the third skit involved Marc interviewing a very longtime Rotarian: Nelson Bell (voiced by JT). Nelson proved to be a cantankerous subject, and More on page 2
2 the Clarifier Page 2 M ORE FROM MARC WINTER S DEBUNKING: turned the tables on Marc, asking him difficult questions instead. Next Marc was remembered for playing in a band (Remember When), but the debunkers had a hard time recalling the name of the band. Each time they would try and guess, a song would play using a word from their attempt. For example, if Remember Who was the guess, the song Who Are You by the Who started playing. The theme of the fourth skit was Sock it to Me. A picture of Marc with a sock puppet taken at his first meeting last year was shown. The real Mr. Sock then made a cameo appearance, along with Don Van Fleet s sock from last year, who now dressed up as Sarilyn Sockroe. Sarilyn (voiced by Marla) coos Happy Debunking to Mr President (Marc). The fifth Skit was based on Marc s role as one of the vocalists in his band. It was a contest called So You Think You Can Sing. There were three judges (Paul, Buff, and Cameron), based on those from American Idol. The first contestant was Don Gould, who sang the Herman s Hermits song Henry the 8 th and got high marks from the judges. Next Bonita Ramos led everyone in a sing-along, with The Wheels on the Bus. Last came Marc, who was asked to sing Carry On My Wayward Son, a vocally challenging rock song from the 1970s. Not surprisingly, he was voted last. Finally one of the Past Presidents stated that he had had enough of this silliness, and called for a vote, for Marc to join their ranks. Dick Mabie came forward with the enormous Book of Bell, to read the rules. At first the vote seemed to be going against Marc, but the thought of him serving for another year, and other reasons, convinced the Past Presidents to vote him in to their exclusive club. Marc s year was finally over! The incoming President, Jim Lehman, came forward and called the meeting adjourned. G UESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS: Guests: Judy McGoon, wife of Doug McGoon Dr. Wei Jing (Richard) Zhang, and his wife Mei Ling, guests of John Regan and Jack Schuster Janet Winter, wife of Marc Winter Katherine Hyde, wife of Bobby Hyde Cameron Troxell Note: The guest list was inadvertently picked up by a third party, and once found, will be published in an upcoming issue, along with the name of the Paul Harris award recipient. No Visiting Rotarians C LUB MEMBERSHIP: This from Board Secretary Bernadette Kendall; During Marc's year, sadly, two wonderful Rotarians, Nancy Thum and Lee Harlan passed on. Herb Christian, Dr. Gene St. Clair, Gene Corey and Bill Judson resigned, and Celeste Martin, Tom Shelley and Brian Smith were welcomed into the Rotary Club of Claremont.
3 the Clarifier Page 3 CLUB NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Harris Awards were given to Judy McGoon, wife of Doug McGoon, and to Dr. Wei Jing (Richard) Zhang, a former student of John Regan and Jack Schuster. MEETING NOTES: The thought for the day was given by Butch Henderson, who read some quotes he had found online, including this gem: The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is very hard to verify their authenticity. -Abraham Lincoln Cameron Troxell PHOTOS FROM THE MEETING: Photos by Steven Schenck
