The kickoff celebration was on May 14 th in Rapid City, South Dakota. They have joined what might be considered the world s largest family. With a Gold Book published annually full of information and friends ready to help in that time of need to an ever changing list of discounts from car rentals to motels and more. And then there is the monthly publication of Wing World Magazine and the GWRRA Store for you to purchase that special item expressing how proud you are to be members of GWRRA. Oh, this is just the beginning of a great adventure. I hope we get to meet the folks of SD-B many times this summer and especially as we travel to Billings, Montana, for Wing Ding 38. It s going to be a great summer throughout Region E as we kick off the rally season with the Missouri District Rally in Branson. From there it will become a blur as Nicki & I travel from one District Rally to the next all summer long gathering with old friends, making new friends, and having fun with all of you. What a great way to spend the summer! Nicki and I would like to personally invite you to our Region s Rally at McGrath s Powersports June in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for two great days of fun with friends from the eight states that make up our Region and those living beyond our Region. Every District is pitching in to make this an event you will remember. We have free food, prizes to win, games to play, guided rides, bike show, District competition, opportunities to learn from the McGrath Team in addition to our own GWRRA Team, and we pick the Individual of the Year and our Couple of the Year which will represent Region E during Wing Ding in You won t want to miss this. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

June 2016 Page 2 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 You have probably heard by now, our Region has a new opportunity for fun at Wing Ding. We will be the volunteers helping with 50/50 ticket sales, the Poker Run, and more. As I was writing this article I took a minute to look at the Region s volunteer sign-up sheet on our website to learn that many folks are not waiting until the last minute to pick their favorite time to have fun. What a great feeling to see so many volunteers already looking forward to having a great time with our Region E family. And please welcome Greg Hayes as our Region Educator and newest member of the Region E Team. Greg lives in the Des Moines area and we look forward to becoming partners promoting motorcycle safety throughout Region E. Have you participated in a class lately? Bob & Nicki Fowkes Region E Directors Jere & Sherry Goodman Region E Assistant Directors Warm Weather Smiles, Sherry & I would like to begin with a big GWRRA welcome to Greg Hayes as our Region E Educator. When it comes to our safety, we can never have too much education! June marks the exciting beginning of the warm weather Rally Season for us and by the time this article reaches you, we will be back from the Missouri District Rally in Branson. Location, location, location!!! We never seem to tire of the Branson area and hope that many of you were able to attend this year. Three weeks later, we will be in Cedar Rapids, IA for our Region E Down on the Farm Rally. This is just the tip of the haystack when it comes to rallies throughout the year. It is interesting when you think about how many of our GWRRA members do not go to rallies. Of course, you cannot do all of them, but we cannot imagine a year without seeing some of the many friends we have made over the years as part of our great organization. This year why not pick at least one and go have some fun. If you are not sure how to have fun at a rally, just shout this out when you arrive, hello, how do we have fun at this rally? You may just get more fun than you could have imagined!!! Ride safe; be well. And, as always, remember that fun shall be the last word so HAVE FUN! Bubba J and Ellie Mae (Down on the Farm) aka: Jere & Sherry Goodman Region E Assistant Directors

June 2016 Page 3 Don & Cheri Walloch Region E Assistant Directors Webmaster/Newsletter Editor Are You Ready for the Rally? This is the last monthly newsletter before our Region E Rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 24-25, so we thought we would take this opportunity to let you in on a few of the happenings that will take place that weekend. Did you know that all pre-registered guests will receive a special ticket in their registration packet and have an opportunity to win a great prize to be drawn during closing ceremonies? To be included in this drawing, be sure to register by June 10. Guests who register for both Friday and Saturday will receive a free lunch courtesy of Region E on Friday serving from 11:30-12:30. This lunch will be catered by HyVee and include brats, burgers, baked beans, chips, AND a cookie. McGrath Powersports will be hosting a free lunch on Saturday. You ll just have to attend to see what that will include. The famous Region E Hospitality will once again be in full swing. As in the past, we ask that you bring a special treat you would like to share with your fellow Wingers. We can t wait to see (and sample) all those yummy goodies! After the ice cream social on Friday afternoon, we will be holding a District Challenge. Now we know you will be getting your teams ready after reading this newsletter. No practicing ahead and who wouldn t want to win a very special trophy for winning this challenge! Our friends in IA-F Troop and District Directors, Sue & Tom Wright, are getting together some great food discounts when members show their wrist band. HyVee on Oakland Rd. will offer choice of one meat, two sides, and a drink for $7.00. Dairy Queen on Center Point Road (about a mile from McGrath s) is offering 10% off when you show your wristband. Our sponsor, McGrath Powersports, will be offering great tire specials, safety inspections, and demo rides. If you have been on the fence about triking your Wing, be sure to take a look at the flyer attached to this newsletter. Roadsmith is offering to Trike Your Bike during the Rally including a half-price rake kit. We can t thank McGrath s enough for rolling out the red carpet for our members. There is so much more that will be happening over these two days that we can t fit it all in this article. The schedule is attached to this newsletter so take a look. We are excited to see you there! 4 June 2016 Page 4 Greg Hayes Region E Rider Educator I was catching up on my reading of Cycle World and I found an article on how to handle heavier motorcycles. The article was written by John Stein and appeared in their March issue. Of course, they had to mention the Honda Gold Wing, though there are heavier bikes out there. Still, the bike itself is pretty heavy. My bike, an 04 Gold Wing, is listed at around 860 pounds dry weight. The current 2016 Gold Wing is listed as pounds with all the required fluids and depending upon the standard equipment installed. Then, of course, with a trike conversion kit a Gold Wing will be even heavier. It does not take a very heavy person sitting on the two wheel Wing before you have over a half ton. We know one of the most challenging parts of riding such a large rig is maintaining balance at slow speeds. But, I think about what it takes to stop all that mass. Newton pointed out that a body in motion wants to stay in motion, which is called inertia. More mass a body has, the more inertia power there is. So, one of the other challenges with our large touring bikes and trikes is making the vehicle stop quickly when the need arises. Particularly when we are traveling at higher speeds, such as on our highways. Fortunately, we have very good brakes. Unfortunately, very good brakes can also lock up one, two, or even three wheels if applied too rapidly. One of the recommendations in the article was to practice a lot. When I know I am alone on the road I have practiced performing a swerve. I don t like to do it when other drivers can see me. I don t want to get pulled over by an officer thinking I am intoxicated. However, alone on the road, I might perform a swerve around a manhole cover, or other object on the road, just to feel the push-push on the handlebars. What I don t get much practice on is performing a quick stop on my bike, and I am assuming most of us don t get that practice until we take a motorcycle riding course. However, this is a very important life saving skill and one that you want to be able to perform intuitively when the time comes that you need that skill. Where else will you get that practice than to take a riding course? I am asking you to please consider taking a riding course while at Wing Ding, or any other venue that is available to you. GWRRA has excellent riding instructors and our programs have very high standards. You will be able to practice and refine many more skills in these classes than just being able to perform an emergency stop. Many of these skills are considered perishable skills, meaning that if you don t use them, or practice them, then you will lose them. Have a safe ride, Greg Hayes Region E Educator

June 2016 Page 5 Recently, I read an article in a newsletter that really helped me write the article for this month. One of the District MAD Coordinators wrote a terrific article and I will give you the condensed version. I never thought of doing this, so it just helps me realize that each of us can learn something from anyone, no matter how short or long we have been in a position for which we are responsible. It also helped me realize that it is so easy to make assumptions about what we think people already know. I made the assumption that all District and Chapter MAD Coordinators knew what they were supposed to be doing with the N23 form. Most of them do! It really is very basic, so I figured that was something that did not need to be addressed. Well, I believe it is time to rectify that assumption. For all District and Chapter Motorist Awareness Division Coordinators (or Educators, if there is not a person filling that coordinator position), the N23 form is used by the National Office to keep track of what is going on in the Region, District, and Chapter levels. The form is very simple to complete and the quarterly due dates are right on the form. That means the form is only required four times each year. Each Chapter, whether the MAD Coordinator or Educator, sends the form to the District Coordinator, who in turn sends it to the Region Coordinator. I request that each District Coordinator send the quarterly N23 form to me by the 10th of the month, so that I may collate the data and send it on to Mike & Barri Critzman, who are the National Directors of MAD, by the 15th. Each District Coordinator likely has a date that they want the Chapter Coordinators to send the N23 to them, but it should not be any later than the 5th of the month. That gives the District Coordinator time to collate the data from all the chapters. There have been a few changes lately in the Region. New people have stepped up to fill positions that have been vacated. Larrie & Kimi Wiggand are the new District MAD Coordinators in IL. They are very active and already busy with MAD activities. I was recently in contact with Marlene Cloude, the new District MAD Coordinator in MO. So, I wish to welcome Marlene and Kimi & Larrie as the new District MAD Coordinators. Thanks to each of you for taking on this important position in your respective districts. If you are already providing help with parades, bike shows, Motorist Awareness seminars, or handing out brochures, pamphlets, and bumper stickers, I have a serious question for you. Why not step up and take the position of Motorist Awareness Division Coordinator for your chapter? You will be helping with the safety portion of GWRRA s motto FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY, AND KNOWLEDGE. I know that there are chapters out there that do not have that position filled. I probably know what you are thinking "Hey, I am already too busy, or Hey, I already have held a position in the past, or Hey, I don t have the personality to talk to people about motorcycles, and ad infinitum. I am sure you are not a lot different from most people. Everyone has a lot on their plate. Talk to your District Educator. Ask them questions about what is involved. At least take the time to find out. No one is going to hold a gun to your head. Seriously, it is a small way to pay it forward for all the benefit you have received from being involved with GWRRA. There is always someone there to help answer questions: the District Director, Educator, and maybe someone who has filled that position in the past. The same applies at the chapter level. If one does not know the answer to your question, they will likely know someone who does. Michael Olson Region E Motorist Awareness Coordinator Share the road; save a life.

June 2016 Page 6 Steve & Diane Gottschalk Membership Enhancement Coordinators Greetings from Southern Illinois: We re all looking for some fun and excitement this summer. The Region E Team has put together a great rally for you! The Region E Rally will be June in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our sponsor and host for this rally is McGrath Powersports. They have been very gracious in helping the Region Team make this a fantastic rally. McGrath Powersports will be providing much of their facility for our use, as well as demo rides, safety inspections, discussions with Honda Tech Reps, bike washes, tire specials, and a free lunch on Saturday. As with the past summer rallies there will be guided rides. Iowa Chapter F has volunteered to put together some great rides around Cedar Rapids, to J&P Cycles retail center, and the motorcycle museum. In addition to riding we ll have: Opening ceremonies on Friday at 9am. We will be announcing Region E Chapter of the Year and Region E MEC of the Year. The main event, Region E Couple and Individual of the Year selection process, takes place at 1pm on Friday afternoon. We hope to see you all there in support of your Couple or Individual! Come celebrate with the new Couple and Individual of the Year at our ice cream/cake social on Friday after the selection. A big thank you to the Iowa District team for sponsoring this. Friday evening will be our GWRRA s Got Talent Show starting at 7pm. The first and second place winners may go forward to Wing Ding 2016 GWRRA s Got Talent. Our MC s for the talent show will be none other than Jere & Sherry Goodman (aka: Ellie Mae & Bubba J). Saturday morning 10-noon will be the Indoor/Outdoor games. We will also be having our District competitions. Set up will be on Saturday morning, judging from 11am - 1pm. At our Region Staff Meeting it was discussed on what type of competitions we should have at the Region Rally. The decision was unanimous, that we would only do District competitions. District Rallies are set up to support all the Chapter level competitions; Region should therefore support competitions at District level. The following are the District competitions that will take place. Banner T-Shirt-Polo Shirt-Dress Shirt, Hat Scrapbook Mascot Newsletters District Pride Of course, this is just from the MEC side of things. There are so many more fun things to do at the Region E Rally so come join in all the fun! Ride safe and have fun! Steve & Diane Gottschalk Region E Membership Enhancement Coordinators

June 2016 Page 7 Bill & Nancy James Region E Leadership Trainers Riding/Rallies Hope everyone is getting geared up for a great riding season. We are starting our riding by leaving Thursday, May 12, 2016, for Rapid City, SD - two days. On Saturday we will partake in a new chapter kickoff for SD-B and it should be lots of fun. Yes, we got the bike ready as everyone has reminded us and even got a new front tire. We look forward to the dinner rides and day rides and having fun with old/new friends. We love getting out on the open road and seeing the beautiful scenery. Or, how about an evening ride by yourself or with 6-8 more bikes along for the ride? Sounds great! This year think about a DESTINATION where you can eat, meet friends you haven t seen in awhile, get involved with a bike show, have fun, check out vendors or take in some training. Yep, it is RALLY TIME and if you have never been to one, this is the year to try one. Why? Well, we just got back from the Region E Ops meeting where each District talked about all the great things they have planned. From bike shows to rider courses, each District has lots to offer just check out their websites for the specifics. By the way, the Region E Rally is in Cedar Rapids, IA this year on June For us Nebraskans that means a nice ride across Iowa on Hwy 30 and the beautiful hills near Boone and much more. Then we get to see people from all over the Region and catch up on the news. Oh! But don't forget the MO Rally in Branson on June 2-4 or the MN/ND Rally in Wilmar, MN on July 8-9. And that is just a start! Then there is the IL Rally on July Oh! and don't forget the NE/SD Rally (8/25-27) in Wall, SD on the way to Wing Ding in Billings, MT. You can even stop at the WY Rally in Sheridan, WY on your way to Wing Ding. With all that, how could there be more - well there is! Check out the WI Rally on 9/16-17 and then the next week why not go to the IA Rally (9/25-26) in Dubuque, IA. Pick and chose or do them all! Well with all that and the Chapter rides, or an impromptu get together, etc. I sure don't see why anyone would say there is nothing to do or no one to ride with. Just call some people and get out there - IT IS FUN. OK it is time to close and continue daydreaming about those rides. Keep safe and we hope to see you this summer at a rally or two. Bill & Nancy James Region E Leadership Trainers
