Nicki and I are on the road quite a bit planning the 2016 Region E Rally. We want you to know that we ve been listening to all of you and it seemed that cost was becoming a big factor in your decision to attend any rally. You were most concerned that the cost of traveling and the cost of host hotels have continued to grow higher each year. So, let me tell you what we ve accomplished. First, we located a city that was as close to the center of our Region as we could find which had facilities to meet our needs. Second, we searched possible locations in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and we stopped at McGrath Powersports and explained that we would have to put this rally together in a short period of time and we must keep our cost down. McGrath Powersports made us an offer we could not refuse and they are working with us all the way to make this rally special. We will not have a host hotel. You may pick any hotel at any price within the Cedar Rapids community, and there are many to choose from. Some are within walking distance and others are just a few miles away. This may be a good time to explore your Member Benefits on the GWRRA website. I ve heard of rates as low as $72.00 per night. For those that like to camp I suggest a nice campground in Marion, so check out this website Park.aspx. We will have all of the usual activities you have enjoyed over the years, but our main purpose is to select a 2016 Region E Couple of the Year and an Individual of the Year. Please come and support your District COY and IOY. They will greatly appreciate that enthusiasm you add. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

March 2016 Page 2 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The 2016 Region E Rally will be held at McGrath Powersports in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 24th and 25th. The rally flyer and registration form are out and circulating throughout the Region. Watch for them on our Region E website, Region E newsletters, and your District newsletters. All of our districts are planning on having very special rallies this summer so we will see you out there on the road to the next great rally. 3 March 2016 Page 3 Jere & Sherry Goodman Region E Assistant Directors Spring is around the corner - time to plan! On a cold day in February, it seemed like a good time to write an article for March. Sitting here day-dreaming about all of the wonderful events and experiences we are about to encounter as Spring is around the corner. While the cold has a grip on so many of us, we can warm up by entering all of the activities that will take place in our calendar. Of course, we cannot attend everything, however it is fun to begin to plan and set our priorities for It is truly amazing when you stop and think about how many things take place in our organization throughout the year. It is a banquet of countless treats to please your palette. There are activities galore on a National, Regional, District, and Chapter level. Add all of the Rider Ed, Membership Enhancement, and Training opportunities and your calendar will blossom with fun throughout the year. And let s not forget the biggie, riding our mighty steeds with our GWRRA family. Sherry and I already started enjoying our fun-filled calendar by attending the Illinois Winter Warm Up in January. Next on our list in early March is Missouri s Spring Fling in Lake of the Ozarks. Our plans are also set for the Region E Rally in Cedar Rapids, IA and Wing Ding in Billings, MT among other rallies. Region E will once again be handling the Goodie Booth at Wing Ding. Helping us to staff the booth would be greatly appreciated. You can sign up for times by visiting the Region E Website, selecting the GWRRA Tab, and Goodie Booth Sign Up Tab. Sherry and I can assure you that spending some time in the booth is a lot of fun. Please consider joining us for some good laughs and fun interaction. Guess I better get back to entering more fun into the calendar. Ride safe, be well. And, as always, remember that fun shall be the last word so HAVE FUN! Jere & Sherry Goodman Region E Assistant Directors

March 2016 Page 4 Don & Cheri Walloch Region E Assistant Directors Webmaster/Newsletter Editor Did you ever ask yourself what a rally is and what purpose it serves? Did you contemplate why the Region needs a rally when your own District holds a rally or why do they hold Wing Ding? The Webster dictionary definition of a rally is, "to muster for a common purpose," "to come together again to renew an effort," "or to join in a common cause." You can't say the main reason for the Region to hold a rally is so they can raise monies to cover their operating expenses. While the Region charges to participate in the rally, just like your District does, the money they raise goes to help support the programs such as the Couple/ Individual of the Year and Chapter of the Year. It also provides information to the Districts and Chapters within the Region and is the hub for the Medic First Aid classes that you need to keep your Levels current. While those things are very important to keep the Region going forward and providing the members with the best GWRRA experience possible, there is one important reason to have a Region Rally. Think about the definition above, "muster for a common purpose" or "to join in a common cause." Whether we ride a GL1800, GL1500, Spyder, or Harley, we all like to ride motorcycles. That is one reason we can assemble at a Region Rally and ride different roads that we may have never had the opportunity to do otherwise. But the best reason that we know to attend a Region Rally is it gives you a great opportunity to meet other members from within our Region. And guess what, they enjoy doing the same thing you do, riding their motorcycle. We joined GWRRA in April of At the time we knew very little about Region Rallies and what the purpose was. At the Wisconsin District Rally, our then Region Director asked us if we had ever attended a Region Rally, and our response was no we hadn't. He said you should, you will not regret it. We attended our first Region Rally in 2013 in Norfolk, Nebraska, and haven't missed one since. The point we are trying to make is by attending a Region Rally it gives you the best opportunity to network with people from all across the Region that are invested in GWRRA and have the same common goals as you - that is to meet other motorcycle enthusiasts just like yourself. If you have never attended or even if you're a seasoned Rally Rat, let this be a personal invitation to you to come join us at the Region E Rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June There are plenty of things planned for you to do. If you see us, make sure you stop us and introduce yourself. We would love to meet you! Don & Cheri Walloch Region E Assistant Directors Webmaster/Newsletter Editor

March 2016 Page 5 Steve & Diane Gottschalk Membership Enhancement Coordinators Greetings, Have you ever wondered what you get out of the program as a Chapter, District, Region, or International Couple or Individual of the Year? Well we asked some of our Couples and Individuals exactly what they got out of the program and their responses are below. Paul & Cheryl Engelman - Missouri District Couple of the Year Paul and I both feel that as the Missouri District Couple of the Year we had the opportunity to meet so many other GWRRA members, that we may not have otherwise had the chance, through the Couple of the Year program. We have enjoyed visiting other Chapter Meetings and Rallies in Region E. Everyone has gone above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. We have both felt that it is a very special honor to be chosen by both our Chapter and our District. Jan Bacon - Missouri Individual of the Year I have had a great time as the Missouri District Individual of the year. In 2015 I had the opportunity to attend events and rallies in Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, and Wisconsin as well as the Region E Rally in Green Bay, WI and Wing Ding in Huntsville, AL. As the Individual of the Year I was asked to assist in many ways, including judging during COY and IOY selections, working registration, judging banners and scrapbooks, and even escorted Wingy around at Wing Ding! The best part of being an Individual of the Year is meeting and becoming friends with so many wonderful members of GWRRA. Bob & Nicki Fowkes - Region E Couple of the Year There we were at the Illinois Winter Warm-Up representing our chapter in the Couple of the Year selection. I had put my best effort into filling out the resume but we had no idea how it would stack up against the others. The day finally came - we got to meet the other candidates and I knew we had some pretty stiff competition; so let s get relaxed and enjoy the ride. The judge s interviews went smoothly and then it came time to step on stage. Well, I knew this was my weak point so once again just relax and enjoy the ride. We darn near fainted when our names were called out. But looking back we are so proud we got the chance to represent Illinois at the Region E Rally. It s been 12 months since we became the IL District Couple of the Year and we have truly enjoyed the ride. Next was the Region E Rally. Wow, again we were up against some pretty stiff competition and once again I told myself to relax and enjoy the ride. Once again our names were called out and tears started to form. Holy crap what just happened? Next comes the selection process at Wing Ding in Billings, Montana, and our District Director is planning an escorted ride for us to Wing Ding. We have no idea how this story ends so once again all we can do is sit back and enjoy the ride. We have met so many wonderful people along the way that this memory will last the rest of our lives. Enjoy the ride, because you won t regret it. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

March 2016 Page 6 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Steve & Diane Gottschalk - IL District 2010 Couple of the Year This program brings out so much in every person that participates and they truly love and believe in it when it s all said and done. I can t speak for Steve but I ve always been considered a wall flower; the Couple of the Year program really helped me to grow as a person. The first thing I would say is that it has given me an abundance of confidence; whether it is in meeting new people, speaking in public up on a stage, participating in skits, or just plain having fun. I never attended seminars before we were named Chapter Couple of the Year, but I started getting curious - what were they all about? All of a sudden I was learning so much about Rider Ed, Membership Enhancement, and Leadership Training. You re not required to travel, you just want to because you are meeting so many new friends and participating. I felt like I was back in high school but having so much more fun. So what meant the most too me? ALL OF IT! Ride safe and have fun! 7 March 2016 Page 7 Bill & Nancy James Region E Leadership Trainers We're Back Well things always seem to be in flux, including our lives. Mike & Jane Hultine requested to step down as Region Trainers. Bob & Nicki Fowkes asked if we would come back and, after having a short break, we happily decided to get back on a GREAT Region E Team. We want to thank Mike & Jane for all they have done and wish Jane the best as she continues to get better and have a clean bill of health. First, we want to congratulate several people who have recently become LTP presenters: Scott Mattson, Minnesota - has stepped up to become a presenter. Also, Frank & Sharon Jackson, Wisconsin - have become LTP presenters. We are sure they will all do a great job. Thanks to all three of you! Just happening is a new concept that we believe will serve Minnesota very well. Amy Peterson is stepping up (she has always served GWRRA in numerous roles) as the new Co-District Leadership Trainer. With her and Dean Kittelson working together we are sure things will continue to get better on serving the large expanse of Minnesota. Thanks Amy and Dean! We have sent out several s to the District Director/Trainers and Region Staff. This included a new listing showing all LTP, MEP, and REP presenters and their renewal dates. District Trainers will be contacting the LTP presenters to check/help with any renewals needed. Membership Enhancement and Rider Education also received the listing and will be updating their information. If you are a presenter and want to know about your instructor information, including renewal date, please go to My R.E. Information on the GWRRA website under Officers/Rider Education. The new Officer Certification Program (OCP) classroom version is complete and ready to be presented by any OCP Certified Trainer. Also, the online OCP is still available in the old version. If you want to take OCP online, contact us and we will make sure you get the information to get started. Thanks in advance for being interested. We will continue to keep the communication going and ask you to let us know if there is anything we can do to make things better. All input is welcome. Bill & Nancy James Region E and NE/SD-District Leadership Trainers

March 2016 Page 8 Safe Driving Tips To Share with Motorists, Friends, and Family Watch aggressively for motorcycles. Search the traffic constantly and expect to see motorcycles. Check blind spots before changing lanes or merging, especially in heavy traffic. Double-check traffic at intersections before turning or pulling out. Motorcycles can easily be hidden in traffic. Look for a helmet above, tires below, or a shadow alongside a vehicle. Anticipate hazards that may confront the motorcyclist and predict how the motorcyclist may react to the situation. Poor road conditions, bad weather, flying debris, oil slicks, and heavy traffic pose high risks for motorcyclists. Allow a minimum three-second "space cushion" when following a motorcycle. Pick out a fixed object ahead of you. When the motorcycle passes the object, count off, "one thousand one, one thousand two..." If you haven't passed the same object after two seconds, your following distance meets the two -second minimum. Three seconds is even better. Also, consider road conditions. In poor driving conditions, at higher speeds and at night, use a four or five-second following distance to give the motorcyclist more space. Watch out when turning left. Because motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, it is harder to see them and more difficult to judge their approach speed in traffic. Do not drive in the same lane as a motorcycle. It is unsafe and illegal. Treat motorcyclists with the same respect and courtesy you afford to other motorists. Observe and obey all traffic laws, signs and signals. Failure to obey and yield the right-of-way can result in the death or serious injury of a motorcyclist. Stay focused on the driving task. Inattentive driving is a major cause of vehicle-motorcycle crashes. Remove all possible distractions that can interfere with the driver's attention, and remove any objects that may block the driver's view. Looking Twice May Save A Life! Safe driving tips for motorists are available in a small, bookmark format perfect for distribution at work, school, or home. These items are free to Minnesota residents and can be ordered at this site: Share the road; save a life. Michael Olson Region E Motorist Awareness Coordinator
