We hope you all survived with too much April fools shenanigans. We heard of colored eggs not being hard boiled. Or sending every one out to find Easter eggs when there was none hidden. And the worst, serving Easter bunny. Back on the Ranch, Lance & Diane have been riding in the Hill Country of Texas and had a great time. We managed to ride all three of the Twisted sisters in one day. Over three hundred miles that day. A couple hundred for three more days. We had a great time in Fredericksburg Tx. On the way down we stopped at the Kansas Motorcycle museum in Marquette KS. Well worth the stop if you are in the area. We also stopped at the Southfork Ranch in Dallas. 2 Dallas Risling Assistant District Director Hello All. According to the calendar riding season is getting very, very close. But according to Mother Nature, well, she is kinda putting a hold on that thought. I did manage to get the bike out twice this past week, at least for a couple of short rides. A funny thing happened on the first ride, I am riding down the highway and fired up the radio, there was very little volume, (yes my hearing is not the best ) but I could not hear my tunes at 60 miles per hour. So I stop, trying to check things out, had low volume on MP player, so unplugged that unit and just turned on the radio, still low volume. Well to make a long story short I actually posted on Facebook to see if anyone else had ever had this issue. ( It was working fine when it went into hibernation last November ), well I got one reply almost immediately from my friend Steve Knode from now Kentucky. He stated he had that problem once and then he UN-MUTED, and all was well. Thanks Steve, well when I UN-MUTED in the garage, I just about blew the window out. All is well now, as I will be a happy rider listening to my tunes. Rally season is to be upon us very soon. Do make your reservations now to attend the NE-SD District rally in Valentine, Ne July 26-28, at Niobrara Lodge, sounds like a good time to meet up with folks you know, and strangers you will meet and get to know while the rally is going on. I would like to split a room with someone ( male only please ) as I don't think Rita will be able to attend. Just let me know. Thanks And there will be other rallies going on thru the riding months in our area, MO,IA,ND-MN,WY, in case you are thinking of making a loop of rallies. And yes you are welcome at every rally you would wish to attend. So lets get those kickstands up and ride. Yankton Midwest Riders club is getting ready for the Blessing of the Bikes, on May 12th, at 11:00 AM at riverside park, which is just east of the Meridan Bridge as you come into Yankton from the south. Usually anywhere from 120 to 150 bikes show up. Hopefully as you receive this newsletter you would have had a very Happy Easter. 3 Mark & Pam Burwell District Rider Educators Tires are the only things that connect your motorcycle to the ground; hence, I think you would agree they are a vital piece of equipment and deserve to be properly maintained. The number one thing you can do to ensure your tires remain in good operating condition is to keep them properly inflated. Under-inflation of tires is the number one cause of tire failure. Under-inflation causes the sidewalls of tires to flex more than for what they were designed. This causes excessive heat to build in the tires, making them more prone to failure. I recommend using the pressures shown in the motorcycle owner s manual and on the specifications placard located somewhere on the motorcycle (inside the trunk lid on the GL1800). Engineers designed the tires and suspension to work together at a specific tire pressure to provide the best combination of comfort, performance, and safety. Even when you keep tires properly inflated, though, you eventually will still need to replace them. For many of you, I suspect tread wear is going to be the leading reason to replace tires. If you look on the sidewall of your tires, close to the tread, you will find an arrow/triangle with the letters TWI (tire wear indicator). The arrow indicates the location of the indicator bump in the tread. If the tread is level with the bump anywhere in the tread, it is time to replace the tire. Because of the long distances Goldwing riders typically travel, the location of most wear will likely be towards the center of the tires. Damage is another reason to replace tires. When you inspect your tires (before every ride, using T-CLOCS right?), look for punctures, cuts, bulges, etc. All of these could lead to disaster if they cause the tire to fail while you are riding. Finally, you may need to replace your tires because of how old they are. As tires age, oils evaporate out of the rubber, making the tires brittle and slick. Sometimes, you can see the damage caused by age in the form of cracks in the sidewall. Then, again, you may not see the damage because it is at the molecular level. Either way, your tires become more dangerous as they get older. Many tire manufacturers recommend you replace your tires after five to seven years, even if the tread is within acceptable limits. You can find the birthdate of your tires in an oval on the sidewalls. The date will be shown as four digits, with the first two digits representing the week of the year and the second two digits representing the year. For example, a date of 3617 represents the 36 th week of Remember to also check your trailer tires, if applicable. Because of the nature of trailer use, trailer tires will typically age out before they wear out. When purchasing replacement tires, beware of the great deals. Sometimes, sellers will dramatically lower tire prices to move their inventory of old tires. Be sure to check the tire manufacture date before you take advantage of the seemingly great deal. 5 Michael Olson Assistant Director, Intl Motorcycle Awareness Program In last month s newsletter I introduced the Motorcycle Awareness Program s (MAP) and discussed, briefly, the activities needed to achieve this important award. The activities that we can engage in are listed below: The Motorist Awareness Program Gold Award The Motorist Awareness Program Gold Award is presented at GWRRA Region or District Conventions by the Region or District Motorist Awareness Program Officer or the Motorist Awareness Program Director. This award recognizes members who have contributed to the safety of motorcycle riders in at least five of the following ways: 1. Presentations to students of public or private schools or universities. 2. Presentations to members of community organizations, both civic and religious. (One event per organization may be counted per calendar year.) 3. Presentation to driving schools. 4. Presentation to AAA or AARP driver classes. 5. Presentation or MAP exhibit at Company Safety Days.. (One event per company may be counted per calendar year.)

The list of Motorist Awareness Gold Award recipients will be submitted to the Motorist Awareness Program Director. Region/District Motorist Awareness Officers will be responsible the GWRRA office to order the award pins. The first Award pin awarded to each individual will be the Motorist Awareness Gold Award header pin. Pins awarded to that individual thereafter will be year date pins.
