1 PREMIERE STUDIO OF DANCE COMPETITION HAND BOOK Welcome to the competitive dance season! We are all very excited about the upcoming performances and competitions. Please take a moment to read through and make note of all the important dates. Having our competitive team on the same page is the key to our team s success! Should you have any questions or concerns along the way do not hesitate to contact your teacher or the office for help. Best wishes to everyone this competition season and most importantly, happy dancing! Important Dates to Remember Thursday, November 1 st ALL competition entry fee forms and payment (cash, cheque, or e- transfer only) are due. Cheques may be post dated to November 15 th, but must be submitted by November 1 st. Thursday, November 1 st All PSD Clothing Orders must be in to the office (cash, cheque, or etransfer only) Saturday, December 1 st Peterborough Santa Claus Parade January February 2019: Competitive costumes will start arriving. Please do your best to pick up your costumes from the office as they become available for sale! February 2019 (Date TBA) Showcase tickets go on sale through Showplace Performance Centre Box Office Thursday, February 21 st at 4:00pm Showcase 2019: Run Through (held at the Studio). All competitive dancers must attend. Saturday, March 2 nd at 8:30am-4:00pm Showcase 2019: Solo/Duet/Trio Show (at Showplace Performance Centre). Minimum $2.00 donation per audience member (in support of Hospice Peterborough). Sunday, March 3 rd at 1:00pm Showcase 2019: Group Show. Tickets required sold through the Showplace Box Office *Ticket information and Show Orders to be announced at a later date* 2019 Competition Dates Exact performance times are handed out a minimum of two weeks prior to each competition. The host hotels below (arranged by the competitions) tend to book up quickly. Be sure to find out each hotel s change and cancellation policy before booking unnecessary nights! PSD is not responsible for any cancellation fees incurred through booking hotels with the group rates or otherwise. Please keep in mind there are MANY other hotels in the areas we are travelling to. The ones we list are the ones suggested by the competition and often offer group rates while quantities last. You do NOT have to stay at any particular hotel.

Competition Team Etiquette o Please be sure to arrive to every competition 90 MINUTES prior to your scheduled performance time (even if the competition is held in Peterborough). Arriving early is very important, as it allows the teachers to make sure everyone s makeup, hair, costumes, etc., are ready for the stage, gives enough time to ensure that the dancers are properly stretched and warmed up, and so we have time to go over the routine as a group before hitting the stage! We are a team and it is not fair to your teammates and/or teachers to be searching for you at the last minute. *** IMPORTANT Teachers reserve the right to not allow a student to perform if they are not at the competition early or if they have forgotten pieces of their costume. Please ARRIVE EARLY and BE PREPARED to avoid disappointment! *** o Cheer for everyone! Parents and Dancers: You are representing Premiere Studio of Dance, so please cheer not only for our studio but for every performer especially at awards ceremonies! This demonstrates a positive attitude and makes the entire weekend more fun! It is not only important to cheer for everyone who takes the stage, but to also be courteous and polite to all backstage personnel, dance parents in waiting areas, and other dancers in the change rooms. o Remember that we are a TEAM (parents included). It is very important that older dancers and adults lead by example! Sometime parents may compare their child s progress or marks to another dancer or group. Having a negative focus or making comparisons creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for all. In addition, speaking negatively about your child s teachers, fellow dancers or other parents in front of your child, or other parents and students, could result in problems far beyond your original concerns and will not be tolerated. Should you have an issue that requires immediate attention speak to one of our teachers, or feel free to us at info@premieredance.ca. The Studio has a zero tolerance policy for bullying or disrespect to teachers, parents or anyone at the studio or at a competition. Students or parents who are not able to follow the studio rules will be removed from the competitive team, and potentially the Studio, immediately.

3 o o o Parents are not permitted backstage at any competition or performance unless they are working with props or are requested to be volunteers. This rule will be strictly enforced. NO video cameras or digital photography on cameras or cell phones is allowed inside any of our competition venues. This is to protect the dancers, the choreography, and the costumes of each studio and its teachers. Please respect this rule! Competitions reserve the right to disqualify an entire STUDIO if people are caught taking pictures or video inside the theatre. Please take as many pictures as you d like in the rehearsal spaces. High quality, professional videos and photos can be purchased at the competitions put the phone away and completely enjoy the moments happening on stage! Finally, a dance performance is interpretative. Every competition judge likes different things. It is quite common for a group of dancers to receive varying marks from competition to competition. Please do not get discouraged (or let your kids get down ) based on their marks. What is important to our teachers is that everyone has tried his or her best, and ultimately each time a routine is performed it gets a little bit better (cleaner!) in our eyes. Although we do strive for overall awards and high marks, what needs to be kept in perspective is that dance is an art, and is done for fun! At no point should we forget that the FUN is why our kids love to dance! All Dancers Competition Bags Should Include the Following: Hair Supplies: hairbrush, comb, strong hair elastics (same colour as the dancer s hair) use two at base of ponytail to start the bun bobby pins/hair pins, hairnet (same colour as dancer s hair), gel (to use while styling) and hairspray (to finalize style). For hairstyles that require straight hair, a high quality ceramic flat iron is recommended. Makeup Supplies: - False Eyelashes: required for all dancers over the age of 6. Plain lashes (no sparkles) are preferred. - Mascara: any long lasting black to put on upper and lower lashes. - Red Lipstick: a long lasting true RED. We love Lipsense in colour blu/red. - Lip Liner: helps prevent colour from bleeding, a true red in brand of choice. - Powder: colour to suit skin tone this is important to reduce shine from sweat and lights. - Blush: natural looking rosy blush, enhance natural look only (no bright pink or red). - Eye Shadow: neutral eye shadow (beiges, browns, golds) to suit skin tone, darker shade in crease. - Black Eyeliner: long wearing pencil or liquid to fill in gaps from false lashes, add small cat eye wing. General Supplies: - LOTS of water and healthy, easy to digest snacks - Makeup remover, nail polish remover, cotton balls, Q-tips, deodorant, mirror, Band-Aids, sewing kit, Tide-to-go, tissues, safety pins, etc. Jewelry Supplies: Rhinestone Earrings are required for all comp dancers (unless otherwise noted), and are available for purchase from The Dancer s Closet. Cost is approximately $15 for earrings (clip-on and pierced options available). Some routines also require chokers, rhinestone pony holders, barrettes, etc., that can also be purchased from the Dancer s Closet. Don t Forget your costume accessories (earrings, choker, hairpiece, hat, etc.) as required for your routine(s). A dancer may not be allowed to perform if they have forgotten a piece of their costume, and teachers will not always have extras. Encourage your kids to carefully pack their own bags, but please double CHECK! Please see the Shoes/Tights/Jewelry/Hair list in this Handbook for details of how each dancer s hair should be worn for each dance. Unless otherwise indicated, each dancer s hair should be neatly middle parted and tightly gelled in a low bun with no flyaway hairs. For the Showcase performance in March all groups will wear middle part low bun.

4 Grooming Tips: o It is easiest to do a bun when hair is DAMP. Please make sure your bun is tightly secured as anything falling out or coming undone on stage will result in distraction and deducted marks! o No underwear is to be worn with costumes, ONLY tights. Older students not wearing tights may want to wear nude boy shorts or thong no panty lines please! Every dancer should have an extra pair of required tights in the event that they run, get dirty, etc. It is very important that everyone have tights meant for dance. Tights from Shoppers or Walmart are NOT the same! Dancers without the correct tights will not be permitted to perform, as it will result in deducted marks. o Cover-ups: Every competitive student is required to have a PSD cover-up (sweatshirt, T- shirt, jacket etc.). Any dancer going on stage to accept an award or watch in the audience must have a PSD cover-up on. PSD wear can be purchased in the office with attached order form in this Handbook. Orders are due November 1 st and no late orders will be accepted, so please get your order in on time to avoid disappointment! Teachers reserve the right to remove a student from the stage during awards if they do not have a cover-up on. Finally, please put dancers name in all PSD cover-ups, shoes, costume pieces, etc., as items are often mixed up in change rooms. Bring extra tights and shoes if possible you never know when you or someone in your group may need them! Tights and Shoes For tights and shoes it is extremely important that everyone is wearing the same colour! Although some tights may look the same in the package, on stage they are not. We will lose marks for students wearing the wrong colour. Do not be persuaded to buy another colour or brand! The Dancer s Closet carries all our required tights for an easy shopping experience. They are located at 653 Parkhill Rd West at the back of the plaza (enter from Monaghan Rd) and can be reached at (705) The following are the brand and colours that are required, as specified in the Shoes/Tights/Hair/Jewelry list on the following pages: Beige Mondor in CARAMEL Pink Mondor E6 Black Mondor in BLACK Fishnets Mondor Professional Fishnet 324 (or 321 for youth sizes) available in Beige and Black. 9 Competition Entry Fees Please find below the entry fees for each competition our team is attending this year. Take a moment to record the dates (the exact time of performances will be confirmed two weeks prior to each competition). To fill out the form please detail the number of groups, solos, and/or duo/trios your dancer will be in at each competition, and total the fees at the side. Add the four competitions together to find your total. Don t forget to subtract the competition entry deposit paid in September at the bottom. Please bring payment (cash, e-transfer, or cheque only) to the office by November 1st. Cheques may be post dated to November 15 th.
