Membership is nondiscriminatory and open to anyone who agrees to abide by Club By-Laws. A condition of membership for insurance purposes is current affiliation with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Our flying field is located at 6903 Randol Mill Road, 1/4 mile east of exit 26 off of Loop 820 at N W Visitors are welcome whenever the gate is unlocked. Free flight training instruction is available to members from 6:00 PM to dusk on Monday and Wednesday while Daylight Savings Time is in effect. Regular Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the McDonalds Restaurant, 769 Airport Freeway, Hurst TX The McDonalds is on the south access road just east of Precinct Line Road. Next Meeting: Tuesday December 15, :30PM McDonalds 769 Airport Fwy Hurst, TX President s Notes Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving holiday! Ours was good and we got to share it with our kids and some friends! You really have to be thankful for so many blessings! First order of business in this article is to let you know the December meeting will be on the 15 th instead of the 8 th. So, just one week later than normal. Speaking of thankful, I have been the President of the club for 10 years now and am going to the status of Regular Member w ith mixed emotions. I want to let you know that I truly have been honored that you have allowed me to serve as your President for these years. I have said before and I will say it again; I have been proud to be associated with a good group! You have always made me very happy with the way you respond to the needs of others when we have food drives, toy drives, events for Boy Scouts, etc. This club has a good heart and that is great to see in today s times. Someone told me years ago that as long as an organization s members are all pulling in the same direction the organization will do just fine. That is what I see with GSW. We may not always agree on what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done, but we all seem to be pulling in the same direction! That is one thing we have over many other organizations and we need to keep it that way. I have truly been blessed with great support from Lee Rice, Sonny Coleman, Tom Russell and Roy Baker. They have made my job easier by far and I thank them for that. I have been asked on several occasions what I am most happy about in relation to my years of office in GSW. There are two things I can think of..the first is that I am happy to see our membership gather together and enjoy one another. It is great to see everyone and their families get together at our Annual GSW Picnic and see the laughter among us. The food is always good, the flying great, and the fellowship wonderful! The project I am most proud of it the fact we now have a good grass infield. When we started 10 years ago, the infield was dirt. It is nice to have the grass. Over the years we have seen one major project per year accomplished. Some were planned and some were not. But, we did accomplish them! Infield grass, sprinkler system for runway and infield, two steel containers, the re-build of the shelter due to snow, an expansion to the sprinkler system, helicopter and control line shelters, and parking lot improvements. In the very near future our club will see leveling of the runway and new walkways under the shelter! I can tell the club is in great hands with the new officers that are coming into office! Please, give them your full support. I am sure you will! I am certain that Darrell, Lewie, Frank, Herb and Roy will continue to provide the leadership to keep GSW moving in one direction. Once again, thank you for your support from all of us! GSW 2015 Event Calendar The new year calendar is shaping up. Anyone can be an event coordinator. New type events are welcome with club approval. Fun-Flys are totally informal--volunteer and coordinate with me; any date including a Sunday. (S) indicates AMA sanctioned event. 3 November Secretary s Report November 2015 business meeting was called to order by club president Tim Lovett at McDonalds Restaurant - Precinct Line # Airport Frwy. Hurst, TX at 7:30 P.M. Business Meeting Minutes: The October 2015 business meeting minutes were approved as written by attending club members by a show of hands vote. Old Business: Primary Elections: Primary Elections for the 2016 GSWAM club officers were held during the November 2015 business meeting, and the following club members were all unanimously elected by attending club members: 2016 Elected Club Officers: Darrell Abby President Lewie Moore Vice-President Frank Rowell Secretary Herbert Koven Treasurer Roy Baker Newsletter Editor Food Drive: Chuck Rovell, food drive coordinator, reported a total of 870lbs of food was donated to help feed those who need help. Thanks to all who braved the weather and made a food donation for a worthy cause. Club Shirts: Not ordered yet. Promises were made to do so. New Business: New Emeritus Club Member: Tim Lovett nominated Jim Keller as our latest member to have Emeritus member status. There was some discussion among attending club members and a motion was made to add Jim to the current list of Emeritus club members. The motion passed and Jim will be added as an Emeritus club member. Thank you Jim for being there for us, and running the concessions areas for all those past events. We certainly do appreciate your efforts! Shelter Area Pea Gravel: There was a lengthy discussion regarding adding more pea gravel under the flying facilities shelter area around and under the tables. A motion was made and passed to fund the pea gravel project using $ up to $ for the purchase of additional gravel. Tim Lovett will be meeting with a concrete contractor to discuss the addition of concrete under the shelter next to the concessions area. Further discussions regarding pouring concrete under the shelter area is pending. New Starter Stands: Attending club members acknowledged that those nice new starter stands at the flying field were built by Trini Lopez using scrap lumber and wanted to send out a big Thank You for sharing those nice starter stands with us. Thanks Trini! 2016 Scale Qualifier Date: Lawrence Harville announced next year s Texas Scale Qualifier event will be held at the GSW flying facility on June 4 th & 5 th Field Safety Rules: The club s field rules have been added to the club website s About Us page. Respectfully Submitted, for the Next to the Last Time, by: Sonny Coleman Sonny@flygsw.org How to help the field maintenance crew NOT! Put your crashed planes in the trash barrels, not the dumpster. Leave your chairs out when you leave. Don t wipe up your gas/nitro fuel spills on the work tables. Throw your cigarette butts on the ground. If you leave or see trash blowing around on the ground, don t pick it up. Let your gas overflow onto the pit area grass. Leave those broken props on the runway. For those of you from Rio Linda who don t know what satire is, look it up. THIS AND THAT By Darrel Abby A hearty congratulations to Lawrence Harville, the new District VIII AMA Vice- President. As you know District VIII is very large and this will put the AMA rep closer to the population center. I think the local DFW clubs and all Texas clubs will benefit. A wet and chilly day did not stop a successful club food drive for NEED on November 7. The morning donuts and coffee from a brand new club coffee pot, not to mention a great lunch, kept us warm. We exceeded last year by 30 pounds of food (total 870 lb). The next day brought more civilized socialization at the annual party at Miguelito s Mexican restaurant. After a good meal, members and spouses alike got plenty of exercise making multiple trips to the gift table. Next, the Control Line Fun Fly encountered reasonable weather; chilly with moderate wind. Lots of flying by only 6 flyers with some onlookers as well. I m not sure who won the flying poker game but the tamales and cookies were sure good. Don t miss the photos from all these events. Kudos this month to Trini Lopez for building new starting stands. They look great and will last a long time. The runway has stayed quite green and the ground crew has managed to keep it mowed in between rains. However, there are days after rains that the runway is too wet for flying. Please use your good judgement and don t make ruts with planes or walk on the runway proper during those times. Feel free to hang around, sit around, and talk airplanes or solve the world problems. Here are a couple of rule reminders. Club regulations do NOT allow helicopter takeoffs or landings from runway 16-34; there is a designated place for copter operations from the cross runway area. With that said, if NOONE is flying the pattern on the main runway, helis may use that airspace. Club policy: you must have your club membership card on your person or transmitter while flying on the flight line. One more: no flying of any kind in the pit area. Help remind your fellow flyers if you see rule problems or unsafe operations. New club officers for 2016 were elected at the November meeting. I would like to personally thank all retiring officers for their 10 years of meaningful service to our club. Without a doubt they have made improvements and made decisions which have advanced our collective group and the hobby in this local area. I'll see you at the field. December 2015 Tail Spinner Page 3

4 November GSWAM Food Drive Celebrating another successful GSWAM food drive to support the North East Emergency (NEED) Center. 6 A Greater Southwest Club Report on SCALE MASTER CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 This is what I spent most of my time doing, I did it very good. Second photo the tall guy is Johnny Hunt our official Contest mascot. The first time in 23 years the USSM Championships came back to the Deep South, Houston and Texas. It was quite a show and a good time was had by all who attended. Out of 30 contestants 14 were from our own Texas Scale Championships WOW almost 50% WAY to GO GSW. I am just going to cover our part. YES I should have taken more photos, I will next time!! I came away with 2 nd in Expert class and the Harris Lee Achievement Award, Best Documentation and Best Mission flying my Skyraider. Mike Barbee walked away with 2015 Grand Champion Honors an award well deserved for a great airplane and excellent piloting skills. 1 st Place Expert December 2015 Tail Spinner Page 6

Texas Scale Championships 2016 June 4. Lawrence Harville Be there or Be Square Congratulations Congratulations to Lawrence Harville, our new AMA District VII Vice President!! Lawrence has been a real leader in our club for many years, and now he gets to lead the entire district! I know he will be a great ambassador for the AMA, and for the clubs in our area. The Trophy table was loaded, they were beautiful and a lot of hard work by anyone who came away with this year s hard work. Thanks to Curtis Kitteringham, Mitchell Baker, Contest CD Barry Raborn and his staff for a contest ran well and smooth. The pilots and spectators were treated to a FIRST CLASS event. Please do not forget this is the time of year that GSW members reach into their pockets and come up with something nice and fun to play with. Please purchase at least one gift for a male and one gift for a female. There is no price or age stipulated, whatever you can afford is good enough. Bring the unwrapped gifts with you to the field Saturday around 0900 hours 5 December Regardless or the weather the event will happen.
