Free flight training instruction is available to members from 6:00 PM to dusk on Monday and Wednesday while Daylight Savings Time is in effect. Regular Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the McDonalds Restaurant, 769 Airport Freeway, Hurst TX The McDonalds is on the south access road just east of Precinct Line Road. Next Meeting: Tuesday May 13, :30PM McDonalds 769 Airport Fwy Hurst, TX President s Notes The cold weather is gone, I do think. We have had a lot of windy days of late and that is normal for this time of year. As the flying season moves into full swing, please make sure you have done the maintenance on your planes to assure success! Check those battery capacities, the fuel delivery system, wing attachment points, etc. This is kind of like spring cleaning, except on planes. The Boy Scout TAG event went great except for the rising wind all throughout the morning. By the time lunch was served it was nearly unflyable. I think the Scouts and their leaders were very happy with their outing to our field. I want to thank all those that put time and effort into this event. I am certain to miss some names, but here goes.frank Rowell, Darrell Abby, Dave Ek, Chuck Rovell, Jim Keller, and Tommy Ezell. Thank you all so much for making this event possible. Don t forget the upcoming Biplane Fly -in May 24 th that Darrell Abby has been working to host for the Club. Get those bipes out and come have fun. I m certain there will be fun, food and fellowship for all! We have been having some theft at the field again and must get some ideas to stop it. This will be the major discussion of the May meeting. Please come, bring ideas, cool heads and let s put something together to bring an end to it. Hope to see you at the field! Tim Lovett, President THIS AND THAT by Darrell Abby We are finally beginning to get a few decent flying days and even a few spectacular days. I'm sure you have noticed the greening up of the field. The runway has been mowed several times and is looking better each week. It is ready for more takeoffs and landings; are you ready? The event schedule is beginning to get active. The recent TAG event April 26 headed up by Frank Rowell introduced several scouts to modeling and aviation despite the windy conditions. We are due for some good weather for the AMA sanctioned Biplane Fly In on May 24. Get your multi wing birds ready. Also on the schedule, notice that a Memorial Day Fun Fly has been added on May 26 headed up by Mike Kopf. Bring your family out and join us in a salute to all who have given their life so we can enjoy this great, free country. One of our larger club weekends is fast approaching. Get your scale plane ready for the Stan Brock Memorial Scalemaster Qualifier June 7-8. Kudos this month go to Massey McDonalds area restaurants for giving the

3 April Secretary s Report April 2014 business meeting called to order by club president Tim Lovett at the McDonalds Restaurant at 450 W. Grapevine Hwy Hurst, TX at 7:30 P.M Tuesday 4/8/2014. March 2014 business meeting minutes approved as written. Old Business: Field Entry Signage Update: The main entryway club sign is in the final stages of paint then installation. The custom sign paint job is being applied by Keith Sparky Sparks, and it should be ready to retake its rightful place greeting and welcoming each and every person visiting the field. Field Maintenance: Many thanks to Ricardo Silva for arranging a repair service to take care of the broken drink machine. The soft drink machine is now ready for the coming hot flying season. Lewie Moore reported that the runway will be mowed twice a week during the growing season starting immediately. Dave Ek is ready to paint the storage containers as soon as the weather allows. The driveway asphalt project is on hold until further notice. After receiving a soil sample report, facilitated by Bob McDuff, it was found that the runway soil is a bit low on nitrogen content. Action to remedy the soil condition to follow soon. Boy Scout T.A.G. Event (Take-off And Grow) 4/26/14: Frank Rowell is seeking volunteers to help work the event. There is also a need for club members to bring out some planes (R/C, control line, helicopters) for the kids to look at, and for the owners to put on demo flights. Advertisement Signage: The new McDonalds sign has been created and donated to the club by Dave Horton. The signage will be attached to the concession area cage within a couple days. Model of the Month: Mike Kopf s Sagitta two meter glider won the April Model of the Month award. The glider was built from plans and a bunch of balsa blocks (a kit). Mike says the plane fly s great and is perfect for slope flying. Trash Can Usage: Reminder: Please put your crashed aircraft remains into the dumpster, and not into the trash cans. Recyclable material (like soft drink aluminum cans) are to be disposed in the plastic recycle barrels, not the metal trash barrels. Club Web Site: Be sure the visit the Greater Southwest Aero Modeler s web site at: Sonny Coleman Club Secretary Sonny@flygsw.org (Continued from page 1) club 100 'super coupons' to be awarded as prizes or drawings at events or however we wish to use them. Thank You! Massey McDonalds also assists us in the annual Toys for Tots drive as well as a free meeting location. The new 'Old Dog' made its debut April 22; don't miss the picture nearby. It looks great and I'm not sure we can call it the 'Old Dog' any more. The word is it's more than 15 years old and has been used for engine testing and break-in, a paint ball target among other things. It has been crashed and repaired several times. Barry Ponder currently is flying it to put some time on a DLE 55. Becoming somewhat bored, he decided to roll the plane into his hanger for a C- Check (ask an airline pilot or mechanic). He installed new servos, pushrods, wheels, checked hinges, gear struts, firewall, receiver, reinforced and glued, and gave it an all new paint job. Thanks Barry. It should be good for another decade or so for club members who want to do some engine debugging/break-in. That's it for now. See you at the field. TAG Day 2014 Saturday April 26 GSW hosted Boy Scout Troop 316 of the Circle 10 Council from Irving. Scout Master Ken Gordon brought eleven Scouts and a couple of Webelos (Cub Scouts in their final year before becoming Boy Scouts) along with their leaders and parents out to our field for a day of model airplane flying, ground school orientation and lunch. The wind was increasing and so we got started with buddy box flying right away. The club has four trainers for this activity. In addition Walt Fisher and Ed Couch brought their trainers. All of the scouts were able to get in at least two turns at the controls. A demonstration flight was made by Lawrence Harvelle with his Bear Cat. Darrell Abby attempted to demonstrate his Ultimate but had engine trouble. Ed Couch demonstrated a quad copter and flying wing. While this was going on Chuck Rovell conducted ground school for the scouts. We then had hamburger and hot dog lunch prepared by Jim Keller and Tommy Ezell. The wind had increased to more than 15 miles per hour so at that point we called it a day and a very happy Scout Troop departed. They were thankful for the day and are looking forward to coming back. Thank you to all of the members who made TAG day a success. Frank Rowell May 2014 Tail Spinner Page 3
4 2014 TEXAS SCALE CHAMPIONSHIPS Stan Brock Memorial SCALE MASTERS QUALIFER June 7-8 TIME TO GET READY This year the Texas Scale Championships will honor one of our own Stan Brock for all his dedication to GSW and the Texas Scale Championships. Stan was always there to help and could be counted on to assist anyone who could use a hand. His last event was to work at the 2013 TSC and we will miss always miss him. His smiling face and can do attitude will not ever be replaced. Come on out and enjoy the day, enjoy the contest, enjoy the planes, flying and pilots but the best is YOU can enter and fly. Categories for every level of scale. Last year saw a great turn out for the Texas Championship and we are hoping to surpass that this year. On any given day at the GSW club field it is not unusual to see almost 85-90% Scale planes in the pits. Next time you re at our field, take a look around, we have everything from civilian, aerobatic to military. If you re reading this you probably have at least ONE scale plane in your stable. Your probably asking What do you want from me Well, Max and I want YOU to come out this summer and play with us. The Scale Masters rules this year are making it easier than ever to enter the ONE and ONLY AMA SCALE contest in all of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. You read that right GSW sponsors and event that NO ONE else does. Makes you pretty proud doesn t it!!! This year the classes are, Expert, Team, Advanced, Pro-Am Pro, Pro-Am Sportsman. If you have never entered an AMA Scale Contest before you should enter this one. If you re a total rookie, we even let you have some help on the flight line with a pilot assistant to help you out. Max, Lee, Tim and I will be there to help you fill out your list of maneuvers and give you help in the pits and on the flight line. We make it SOOOO easy you can t miss. So let this be the summer you bring home your first AMA Scale Trophy Let s take them one at a time and see which one fits you the best. ProAm/Pro: ARF s are allowedthis category is available as an entry-level class for new and developing scale competitors. Contestants may enter the ProAm/Pro category provided they have not previously competed in Expert, Team Scale, or Advanced. This category does not enforce the Builder of Model (BOM) rule and includes purchased, modelerbuilt or factory-built scale models including ARF/ARC (almost ready to fly/ cover). To obtain a static score a ProAm/Pro contestant would provide some form of documentation proving that his/her entry is an example of a full size man carrying aircraft. Documented evidence will automatically score 30 points for static without any judging of the subject aircraft. If there is no documentation, the static score will be zero. ProAm/Sportsman: ARF s are allowedthis category is available as a novice class. Contestants may enter ProAm/Sportsman provided they have not previously competed at any level other than USSMA ProAm/Sportsman,AMA Fun Scale Novice or any other scale R/C May 2014 Tail Spinner Page 4
5 (Continued from page 4) contest above the novice level. To obtain a static score a ProAm/Sportsman contestant would provide some form of documentation proving that his/her entry is an example of a full size man carrying aircraft. Documented evidence will automatically score 25 points Next Month I will cover Expert, Advanced and Team. So you say what TRICKY SCALE flying do I have to do. This where we separate the men from the boys, You must perform 5 extremely Difficult maneuvers. They are: Take Off Fly by--straight line down the runway between 10 and 20 ft high Figure 8 draw an 8 in the air Landing Realism in flight did it look like a real plane flying around Then you pick 5 other maneuvers that you like to do like a loop, roll anything the real plane would do. THAT IS IT!!! You do that every time you fly. Give one of us a call WE WILL HELP YOU ANY WAY WE CAN. You will get a free lunch, be eligible for the drawings and hopefully earn a place in Texas Scale history. This year we will be having a Texas Scale Championship-Stan Brock Memorial golf shirt with a pocket. Every year several guys come to the event and want to buy a shirt, BUT, you can only get one by PRE-ordering. These shirts are one of a kind and can not be purchased after the initial and only order so give me a call and order your shirt now. It will not be the same color as last year. Get your shirt NOW Lawrence Harville May 2014 Tail Spinner Page 5
