Membership is nondiscriminatory and open to anyone who agrees to abide by Club By-Laws. A condition of membership for insurance purposes is current affiliation with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Our flying field is located at 6903 Randol Mill Road, 1/4 mile east of exit 26 off of Loop 820 at N W Visitors are welcome whenever the gate is unlocked. Free flight training instruction is available to members from 6:00 PM to dusk on Monday and Wednesday while Daylight Savings Time is in effect. Regular Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the McDonalds Restaurant, 769 Airport Freeway, Hurst TX The McDonalds is on the south access road just east of Precinct Line Road. Next Meeting: Tuesday August 13, :30PM McDonalds 769 Airport Fwy Hurst, TX President s Notes Summer is here and the heat is on! I know you may think I harp about making sure you stay hydrated while at the field during the summer. Guess what? I will still harp about it. We had a member at the field let is sneak up on him just the other day. It was a bit disconcerting to see how long it took to get back to some semblance of normal. Please, drink plenty of fluids while you are at the field. If you are at the field all day and don t have to go to that little room, then you are not drinking enough water!!! We had Stan Brock s estate sale at the field a couple of weeks ago. I think it was well attended and went very quickly. Thanks to all of you that participated. Thanks also to Jim Keller for cooking. As usual it was very good to eat. We don t have anything in the month of August as far as events are concerned. That is mostly due to the heat. However, we do have a Big Bird Fly-in coming up in September, so get those big birds ready to go and let s have a great turnout for this event. The landing fee is only $10.00 and we will have the cooks make us lunch. We will have a great time and I hope to see you there! The runway looks WONDERFUL!!!!! I do not think I have seen it such a beautiful condition, ever. The new sprinkler line we put down the center of the runway is getting us full coverage and the grass is really green and lush. Thanks to all those that helped with that project. A group of guys put in a new sump pump and a new drain box at the pit line. Those items help to keep the water out of the pits when it rains. I was not a part of that group, but I think it included Lewie Moore, Daryl Abbey, Max Ficken, and others. Thank you! 3 July Secretary s Report Call to order Tim Lovett called to order the regular meeting of the Greater Southwest Aero Modelers at 7:00 P.M. on July 9, 2013 at McDonalds. Roll call There were no new members or guests present. Approval of minutes from last meeting The minutes from the last meeting were approved as written. Open issues Storage building not yet painted The youngest work crew member at the last work day was 50 years old. Where are all the other club members when there is work to do? Ed Couch is to do a meeting program on model aircraft batteries. New business 2013 Christmas Banquet tickets available see Tim Lovett Workday scheduled 7/13/2013 8:00 A.M. to fill in the runway irrigation ditch low spots and to replace some sprinkler heads. Lee Rice to install air vents on the storage container when the parts arrive. Program Bill Tarver provided the club meeting program talking about making silicone molds for making model aircraft parts like ordinance pylons, machine guns, and instrument gauges Model of the Month Jim Whitworth won the July 2013 MM award with a giant sized Sig Wonder, which was built using blown-up plans of the original model. The 11-lb model has a wingspan of 72 and powered by a DLE 20 gas engine. I know one item we are going to discuss is a club auction/tail gate sale. We need to set a time. Several of the members that were at Stan Brock s estate sale liked the format we used and want to have it at the field before it gets cold/wet. So that will be an item on this month s agenda. It will be at La Hacienda Ranch again this year. Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm We will have a private room and the number of guests is limited to 45. Tim says ticket prices will be $15.00 per person with the club picking up the additional $8.36 per ticket. Fajita buffet Menu is: Chips & Salsa Chicken & Beef Fajita meat Spanish Rice Refried Beans Sour Cream Guacamole Pico-de-gallo Grated cheese Fresh made tortillas Tea or Soft Drink ALL Alcohol must be purchased by each guest. The club will NOT pay for any mixed drinks, wine, etc. This and That By Darrell Abby August? This is the August newsletter already? The deadline really snuck up on me. I feel like I haven't flown much this summer. Wind, then hot, wind and hot together. Then there is always some summer travel. Yes, it was cooler in Duluth and along the north shore of Lake Superior. I have heard several reports of guys arriving at the field to find locked gates so maybe I'm not the only one not flying much. We did enjoy one nice cool week here and some wonderful July rain. The field was mowed and trimmed today (7/25) and "WOW!" if you haven't visited lately, you need to. This may be the greenest, nicest GSWAM flying field ever. Kudos this month land up the hill on the control line circle. Without question this contingent has the highest percentage of member turn-out for our club work days. They may act a little dizzy but they sure get the work done. Ed Couch recently had a picture session and maiden flight of his P-39Q Bell Airacobra. It flew very well and true after light trim adjustment and sounded good, too. The electric nose gear failed to extend for landing but the experienced pilot touched down on the mains and skidded to a stop on its nose with no damage. More finish detailing and maybe a sound system will be forthcoming. National Model Aviation Day is Saturday, 17 August. Whad'd'ya say we have an impromptu fly-in to celebrate? That's it for now. 4 Post Fourth of July Fun Fly Due to the volunteers who helped me and all who came out to participate or observe the flying, the Fourth of July Fun Fly was a great success. We had approximately 50 persons sign up for the event. All who attended were treated to a really tasty lunch prepared by our volunteer kitchen staff led by James Keller. Thanks for another super job. Thanks to Lawrence who was in charge of music and the fun fly games. He decided to cancel the games so that we could watch the flying of the many scale war birds. They were brought to the event to honor the part they played in keeping us free. He kept Marching music playing throughout the event. Before lunch, all honored the flag by saluting during the playing of the National Anthem. All veterans present, formed up and were recognized by their branch of service. After lunch, presentations of the Founding Member Award were made to Bob Snyder and West Blair for being founding members, This was followed by a presentation to Lillian Brock, posthumously recognizing Stanley as a founding member and for all he contributed to the Club. He will always be greatly missed at our field and meetings. Later, a drawing was held for all who attended. Four $20.00 gift certificates from Roy s Hobby Shop were given away. Two went to Club members and two to visitors. No, Lawrence did not win one. I hope to see everyone, who attended this event, at the Food Drive Fun Fly to be held on the Saturday, 2 November.
