4 Page 4 Ovid-Willard Lions have gone to the Dogs! At first glance, no one would believe that a Dog Show could generate humanitarian benefits for animals and people. For eighteen years, a loose confederation of four Kennel Clubs has built a Show in the Finger Lakes region that ranks in the top ten of nation. This group, called The Wine Country Circuit, has literally consumed the Sampson State Park with a four day event in which 1000 dogs per day compete in three general events: Confirmation, Obedience, and Agility. Each day of the Show is hosted by a different Kennel Club: Kanadasaga, Finger Lakes, Elmira, and the Onondaga Kennel Clubs. The total attendance is not measurable as 550 campsites are used while daily competitors and spectators arrive by the thousands, which leave that day. This successful event creates secondary benefits for the community at large and, in particular, humanitarian groups who support the occasion. The Disney Land scale of the logistics problem became evident. In 1999, the newly appointed Park Manager, Bruce Fullem, offered this challenge and opportunity to the Lions Club President, David Hubman. The Ovid-Willard Lions Club had 49 years of fund raising projects on a smaller, but more comfortable scale, i.e. broom and calendar sales, mints, etc. The Club membership ranged in the low 40s with one woman involved and most members liked the situation as is. Selling the new adventure was tough, but after several years the club responded. Bruce Fullem joined the Lions, became President, changed jobs and recently died. David Hubman has since relocated. The current chairman, Paul McPherson, (pictured lower right) has developed this event into a major energizer for the Club whose membership now stands at the low seventies and who embraces the project enthusiastically. In addition to this challenge, the Club has adopted more liberal policies regards woman members, meeting attendance, and event involvement. So how does this become a humanitarian project? The work of the Lions is to do traffic control, valet parking, and garbage pickup. In this, they are paid an hourly sum. In addition, many of the daily people problems result in grateful tips by the attendees. Over the four-day period the work consumes 51 Lions and 7 volunteers in two-six hour shifts every day. And of course, this money is generously directed at Ovid-Willard Projects including Guide Dog training and development. Typically, the final result is near $7,000, which is transparently distributed to the various sight and hearing projects. Other groups such as the Watkins Glen Rotary, Romulus School District Community Sports, South Seneca Yorkers, and the Ovid Federated Church WCA earn rewards by providing unique and needed services to support the event. In all cases, the funds support some humanitarian and community need. In addition, the sponsoring Kennel Clubs give generously to the SPCA, Relief Rescue in Florida, and dog research at Cornell University. All of which helps in connecting people with animals to help people. Submitted by Region 4 Chair Dan Motill
5 Page 5 Peace Poster Contest at Ovid Willard Three South Seneca Middle School students recently received awards in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest at the club level, where judging was by members of the Ovid-Willard Lions Club. Eight students from the school submitted entries. Leah Wolff s entry was awarded first place and she will receive a $ Savings Bond. Megan Chase won second prize and a $75.00 Savings Bond while third place and a $50.00 Savings Bond was awarded to Scott Millspaugh. All local entries were on display at The National Bank of Geneva s Ovid office from November 15 th through the 23 rd. Give Peace a Chance was the theme of the Peace Poster Contest. Students who are 11, 12, or 13 are eligible to select a medium and draw, paint or sketch. Posters advance through the local, district, state and international judging. Wolff s poster now advances to the multiple district level consisting of all New York State schools and Bermuda. Judging at that level will take place December 15 th. First Prize winner Leah Wolff accepts congratulations from Vice District Governor Phyllis Ludwig Leah Wolff s Winning Entry At the final level, a group of judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and twenty three merit award winners. The state contest is completed in December and the International winners are notified in January. A student from Apalachin in Tioga County won the Multiple District prize last year. Congratulations to all and good luck to Leah. District Governor Goals For Lion Year All Clubs net +2 or more new members. 1 new Lions Club. 2 new Leo Clubs. Enhance Photo-Screening program. 6 Page 6 Apalachin Club News from Around District 20E-2.. The Apalachin Lions Club, in conjunction with Lions Clubs International, intends to sponsor a sophomore student from both Owego Free Academy and Vestal Senior High School to participate in the regional Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) workshop. Big Flats This workshop will be held in May 2005 in Syracuse. The Apalachin Lions believe that HOBY will benefit the participant as well as his/her peers, the school, and the community at large. Our Community Service 50/50 tickets were sold out in record time, and we're ready to start the fun with the first drawing! Many thanks to Lion Rita Dery for heading up this project, and to Lion Bim VanEtten for selling over 60 of the tickets! Lion Mike Yanak headed up another successful Journey for Sight event this month, netting 11 participants and at least $285 for the cause. Thanks Lion Mike! Thanks also to Lion Gary Bernhardt, both for heading up our Camp Badger work party in October, and for researching a potential signature project for our Club. Coming up in November we have Scouting for Food on the 13th, headed up by Lion John Hoos. Zone Chairman Donna Peck visited us in November and reported on the recent meeting in Geneva. She also presented a certificate of appreciation for our club, gave us some current material on photo screening, and promoted the ECHO Taps project. As it happens, our own Lion Bim VanEtten is looking into ways our club can contribute to ECHO Taps, most likely be in the form of traffic control and transportation of buglers. At the same meeting we were privileged to receive a wonderful talk and slideshow from Bryan Foster, representing the Boy Scouts. He showed us the many and varied activities of his Cub Pack #86, which has grown from 15 to 45 boys over the last 26 years! At the time of this writing we are looking forward to hearing from Jody Egleston on Holiday Treats. As always we thank the many speakers who visit and add so much to our meetings. Work was also plentiful in November, with a meeting of our Signature Project Committee and Scouting for Food on the 13th. The scouts collected (and we sorted) over 4,300 items, which was very close to the record set last year! Coming up in December we'll have our Christmas party on the 13th with entertainment by the "Barley Boys", and there's also our annual Bell Ringing project at Minier's to benefit the local Food Pantry. If we don't see you at an event, Happy Holidays!
7 Page 7 Club News from Around District 20 E-2 Continued Waterloo The 58 th Annual Lions Halloween Parade stepped off at 7:00 PM on October 28th. 21 Lions members took part as walker escorts of the parade or at the middle school where the judging was done and refreshments were provided. The Waterloo Lions were assisted by the Waterloo Police and Fire Departments, the Waterloo High School Marching Band and the Waterloo Middle School Marching Band. Individuals that assisted were Les and Ida King, Sue Altimari, Dan Williams, Steph Altimari and Liz Fleming. Corning The Halloween Parade again was a Success, thank you to Lion Sue Breen and her staff. Lion Skip Dutton attended a screening session performed by the Ovid Lions of preschoolers in Seneca Falls. He was surprised that it is relatively easy to do. Lion Skip would like to get underway with this project ASAP. Needed are three other people besides Lion Skip and King Lion Norm, a total of five, to do this project. Let s do it. Starting off the month 5 Lions attended the Fall Conference. 3 Lions attended the 2 nd Cabinet meeting.3 Lions helped with the unloading of Girl Scout cookies from a tractor trailer.7 Lions traveled to the Penn Yan Club for a visitation. 3 Lions attended the Zone meeting. Corning Lions held their 75 th annual football banquet honoring both East and West High schools football players and cheerleaders. Speaker at the banquet was Jim Shiffer, Mansfield University head football coach.105 people attended the 45 th annual banquet. Lion Bart Adams (chair) organized this event. The Corning Lions Club would like to congratulate Lion Walter Smith on his 98 th birthday. Lion Walter has been a lion for 65 years. Lion Frank Muccini has held many eye screenings so far this month. Upcoming Events: Corning Joint Service Club meeting with Rotary, Kiwanis, Corning Lioness and Corning Lions Clubs will be held Nov 23 rd at 12 noon. Place to be held will be the Corning Radisson. This year will be the Lions turn to organize meeting. Salvation Army night will be held on December 16 th at 6:30 PM at the Corning Radisson. Victor The Victor Lions Club hosted a Halloween party at Victor Central School for children aged pre - K through 6th grade. Prizes were awarded to the best costumes but all participants were given a prize. They were all offered cider and doughnuts. Club members will be ringing Salvation Army bells in November and December. Their third sponsored dog from Upstate Guide Dogs will graduate on December 4th.
8 Page 8 Club News from Around District 20 E-2 Continued Watkins The Watkins Glen Montour Falls Lions Club had their Annual Visit with the District Governor. Lion DG Wayne paid us a visit on November 08, 2004 (contrary to our Bulletin, dated for his visit,) he was there 3 days early. The Bulletin Editor paid for his crime with a cash contribution. Lion DG Wayne cited his goals for his year and also informed the Club of a project for SD 20- E2, to promote a project for Camp Badger, a half court for Basketball sportspersons. It is an interesting challenge to the Clubs of 20-E2 to become part of the Governor's quest. We held the first of this year's Adopt-A-Highway, nineteen Lions participated in the early morning of November 13, Because of our number the 2 mile stretch was completed in one hour. A RE- CORD. The Club has Volunteers signed up for "ECHOTAPS", this event is to take place on May 2005 from the Elmira Woodlawn National Cemetery to the Bath National Cemetery. A 41 mile stretch of road lined with Buglers at 1/10th of a mile intervals, playing TAPS in honor of our Deceased Veterans. Go on Internet and learn more about this project. Also if you are interested to participate in a Fund Raiser at a cost of $5.00 per ticket for the Grand Prize of Dinner for Two for 52 weeks. Second prize Dinner for two for 26 weeks, third prize $ Drawing April 5, Contact PDG Bob Mizzoni, or bobdmizz@verizon.net for more details. Where s my Club s News????? Thank you to those of you who are sending me information for the district newsletter and please keep the information coming. Special thanks to Region Chair Dan Motill who supplied me with information and copy on the Peace Poster contest and the article on the Ovid-Willard Lions Club s participation in the annual dog show. If your club does not have any information in this newsletter, why not write something and submit it for consideration in next month s newsletter? Because of the size of the district I must rely on information I receive from individual clubs and if I don t receive any news from your club, your club might be left out. I will accept information at any time and do my best to get it published. Check out the instructions on Page 3 of this newsletter to see how to get information to me for publication. Wouldn t it be great if, at least for one month, we had news from every club in District 20E-2? Let s make that our goal! Newsletter Editor Jeff Gifford
