1 Dance Staff Alicia Cross Engelhardt Cindi Adkins Deborah Waters Bigger Ballereenies Saturdays, 1:15-2pm Ages 5-6 Your young dancer will continue to develop movement basics in this energetic class. Some children start at this level based on age and ability, but it is intended for students who have completed Teeny Ballereenies or the equivalent and are ready to learn some new ballet skills. Each session concludes with a demonstration of all that we ve learned Youth Beginning/Continuing Ballet Saturdays, 2:15-3pm Ages 6-12 Young dancers will gain understanding of proper ballet techniques used in this invigorating class! Some children start at this level based on age and ability, but it is intended for students who have completed Teeny Ballereenies, Bigger Ballereenies, or the equivalent. These split sessions are perfect for busy schedules. Parents may observe the first and last class of each session. Latin Dance 102 Mondays, 6-7pm After mastering the basic steps and turns in Latin Dance 101, of Bachata, Cha Cha, Merengue and Salsa, you will be comfortable and ready to learn to integrate and add transitions and numerous spin combinations in succession of each other. Jan 22-Apr 23 $80R/$120NR Jan 8 $96R/$144NR Jan Belly Dance 101 Thursdays, 6-7pm Trying out basics like hip shimmies, drops and lifts and infinity loops, plus snake arms, shoulder shimmies, some turns and traveling. Then learn to connect individual movements into small combinations. Veils may also be explored. Classes will incorporate a fusion of numerous Belly Dance styles and build confidence, body comfort, coordination and awareness. This beautiful art form celebrates women of all types in a comfortable and energizing atmosphere. Learn basic dance skills that make it so fun to dance the blues and that will get you on the dance floor in no time! Blues dancing is a partnered dance characterized by pulsing, a relaxed yet athletic posture, rhythm play and improvisation. Historically blues dance includes various types of African American vernacular social dances that developed in different regions of the country since the early 1900s that are now seeing a revival in many major cities in the US and abroad. No partner or previous experience required! Learn basic and intermediate swing dance moves and move from toe tapping to getting out on the dance floor! Swing dancing (including jitterbug, swing, Charleston and lindy hop ) is an often-energetic partner dance, characterized by pulsing, a relaxed yet athletic posture, and improvisation. It is one of the most fun and versatile dances, appropriate for a wide range of music, from 1940 s jazz to modern Christmas tunes! For Beginner Swing, sessions 1, no previous experience required; the moves taught will be different from those covered in Fall 2018, but still at the beginner level. In Intermediate Swing, session 2, you ll learn more intricate moves, cool dips and tricks, musicality, and dance creativity; this class is open to anyone who has taken any of the UPD beginning swing dance classes, or by permission of the instructors. Note: There s a discount if you sign up for both Beginner and Intermediate Swing. No partner or special shoes required. No class on March 17. Contra Dancing is the American descendant of English Country Dancing and has figures similar to those from square dancing (swing, do-si-do, etc). Please bring an additional pair of clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor and refrain from wearing perfume or cologne. A forerunner of American square dance and contra dance, it has been featured in movie adaptations of Jane Austen s books. Programs will consist primarily of the dances and music from England in the 1600s and 1700s and from the American Colonial and Revolutionary periods. All dances will be taught at these social and recreational programs where there is always live music provided by the Flatland Consort. Partners, costumes and experience are not necessary. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a separate pair of clean, soft-soled, non-marking, non-street shoes to help protect the floor.
