1 Brook Park News A publication of your Brook Park Manor Civic Association Volume 20, Issue 10 October 2013 BROOK PARK NEWS The newsletter is available on the Brook Park website. If you want the newsletter sent to your Inbox, you would need to go to the Brook Park website ( and do the following: 1. Click on Add me to Brook Park Newsletter Mailing list. 2. Enter your address. 3. Click on Join Mailing List. HALLOWEEN PARADE ON OCTOBER 26 The 25 TH Brook Park Halloween Parade will be held on Saturday October 26th, beginning at 3:00 pm rain or shine. The parade will begin at the corner of Broad Hill Drive. and King James Drive. The parade route will circle the King James loop and end on King Albert Drive in the culde-sac where we will enjoy cookies and drinks. If you are around the neighborhood that day, please come out and line the streets to cheer on the little ghosts and goblins as they pass by on the street, this would mean a lot to them. As a reminder, please do not park along the parade route. We are expecting the North Allegheny band and maybe the NA Fiddlers, as well as the Franklin Park VFD to participate. Please sign up so we know how many to expect. A flyer for parade sign-ups is attached to this newsletter. This is a fun way to see all the great costumes in the day light! Get your kids excited and pick out those costumes. We look forward to seeing you there. CIVIC ASSOCIATION BOARD POSITION FILLED Many thanks go out to Dave Haddad for volunteering to serve on the Civic Association Board. FIELD CLUB NON-VOTING CIVIC BOARD ALTERNATE POSITION FILLED The Civic Association board also welcomes Stacey Armstrong who will serve as the Field Club representative. Thanks to Stacey for volunteering her time. BROOK PARK HAS A FACEBOOK PAGE This is a great way to get the word out quickly when you have items for sale, requests for contractor recommendations, advertise your services, etc. Spread the word and LIKE the page TODAY!!!! facebook.com/brookparkmanor Board of Governors President/Treasurer: Vice President: Secretary/Women s Club: Field Club Rep: Members: Alternates: Membership: Newsletter Editor: Welcome: Dennis Moul (412) Drew Fyock (412) Lisa Kocent (412) Stacey Armstrong (412) Thomas Franks (412) Dave Haddad (412) Jim Hudson (412) Paul Katus (412) Ian Lindsay (412) Tom McGurgan (412) Phyllis Musial (412) David Scott (412) Eric Bradley (412) Bill Fatica (412) Jim Kearns (412) Diane Salvatora (412) Sandra Schuster (412) Jessica Deible (412) Donna Hudson (412) Cara Cortazzo (412)
2 OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION COMING ON OCTOBER 26! The Civic Association is sponsoring an Oktoberfest Celebration party on Saturday, October 26, 2013, 7:00 pm 11:30 pm at the Franklin Park Fire Hall. Come hoist your steins in celebration of Germany s fall tradition. DJ, food, drinks, fun and more are planned. See the attached sign-up flyer for details. All are welcome - Civic Association members, friends, family, etc. A separate fee is offered for non-members of the Civic Association or those not signed up for a Social membership. Please sign up for the event by the deadline date stated so that party committee volunteers have ample time to plan and prepare. WHEN SELLING YOUR HOME IN BROOK PARK Please remember to provide your realtor and/or potential buyers with a copy of the protective covenants covering your Phase of Brook Park when selling your Brook Park home. Doing so will eliminate potential issues with the closing of your sale. A copy the protective covenants can be viewed and printed from the Brook Park website: ROCHESTER ROAD SPEED TRAP BEWARE! Thomas Franks, Brook Park neighbor and member of the BPMCA Board, would share his story with the neighborhood to hopefully save others some money and hassle. He was recently pulled over by a Ross Township policeman on motorcycle about 6:00 pm on Rochester Road. The officer had apparently been waiting out of sight in the parking lot of the Sunbelt Rentals Store. As a result of being cited for going 49 mph in a 35 zone, he ended up with 3 points and a fine of $140. So please beware of this speed trap and let Tom know if you would like to join him in a petition to raise the speed limit on Rochester Road. SOCIAL MEMBERSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE FOR FORMER BROOK PARK RESIDENTS The Civic Association Board is now offering Social Membership to past residents of Brook Park. A Social Membership offers the ability to participate in events and activities sponsored by the Civic Association and Women s Club (although does not include voting rights). Do you know of someone who would be interested in joining? Membership Fee is $30 per year. Checks are payable to: BPMCA and should be forwarded to: Lisa Kocent, 999 Broadmeadow Drive, Pittsburgh, PA Forward any questions or requests for additional information to Lisa LKBird79@gmail.com. WELCOME TO NEW NEIGHBORS Please give a special Brook Park welcome to our new neighbors David and Denise at 1541 King Albert Drive! They are originally from the Shaler Area and enjoy cooking, music, running, mountain biking, gardening and woodworking. They are looking forward to getting to know the neighborhood better as they get settled into their new home. Please update your neighborhood directory with their contact information: David Sonnett and Denise Stotler 1541 King Albert Drive denise.r.stotler@gmail.com PIG ROAST RECAP Even though this was not the greatest summer weather-wise, we sure sent it off with a big bang! The 18th consecutive Brook Park Picnic & Pig Roast was one of the best we have ever had. 255 people were served delicious food, the weather was great, and the singing was lots of fun, with some very good offerings (sure wish we all could do that!). Thanks to Coach Dave Grey and the pool staff for entertaining the kids and adults. Thanks also to all those who volunteered. You cannot pull off a party this size without a lot of help. As long as we get this much interest, let s go for 20 straight years!!! Mark your calendars for the weekend before Labor Day Thanks, thanks, thanks to Sandy Schuster for coordinating this fun day for us all to enjoy!! TRICK OR TREAT SCHEDULED Trick or Treat Night for both Franklin Park and Town of McCandless is Thursday, October 31, 2013, 6:00 pm 8:00 pm. Help keep our ghosts and goblins safe - turn on your lights and drive slowly through the neighborhood.
3 6-PACK & A SNACK--FIRST PARTY Date: Friday, Sept. 27 Time: 7:30 pm -11:30 pm Location: Brook Park Pool Pavilion The "6-Pack & A Snack" is a new group and open BOTH men & women. It is a group that evolved from "Happy Hour". Like Happy Hour, "6-Pack & A Snack" brings members together four times a year, at different members homes. "6-pack & Snack", however, is Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) and Bring Your Own Snack (to share). There are no committees, which means no commitments. Based on the size of the group this year (72 members!), everyone seems to like the changes. We are looking for two more members to host parties. The Host determines the date of their party and how many he/she would like to accommodate (20 to everyone). With a group this size, it is totally understandable if a host wants to limit the number of party goers. Hosts do not have to cook, provide a snack or paper products. All will be provided by the group members. Members will also help you set-up for the party and do post-party cleaning. If you would like to be added to the 6-Pack & A Snack mailing list, please Maura Rodgers at maurarod@msn.com. CHEERS, Sandy Schuster and Maura Rodgers WOMEN S CLUB GROUPS AND EVENT CHAIRS/CO-CHAIRS FOR Women s Club groups and events are already in full swing.
