Service Above Self Rotary Club of Regina Eastview The ROTOR May 3, 2018 Club Web Site Editor: Peter Peters If you have any comments or questions, the editor. May10 New Integration Society with Alex Sabawi May 17 YWCA with Melissa Coomber Bendtson May 24 No Noon Meeting - District Conference 2018 Begins Delta Regina May 31 Street Culture Kids with Jade Koch Jun 7 The F.I.R.M. with Wayne McKenzie Jun 14 Changeover Meeting at Best Western Seven Oaks PROGRAM New Integration Society With Alex Sabawi Next Week May 10, 2018 DUTY ROSTER Registration: Leo Ell 50/50: Pat Dell Greeter: Dave Edwards Student: Tracey Sparrowhawk In Rotary May is Youth Services Month! Lyle was not at the Registration Desk, but Pat Dell was there taking paper money while Shannon Windrim was serving the plastic people. Joyce Butler was filling in for Nelson Falkowsky at the 50/50 Draw station - we might see Nelson s smiling face somewhere along this welcoming row. Interesting to see (in this instance PE John Van Koll) groveling to get into the meeting. The assigned Greeter was absent so we continued the Rotary tradition of welcoming one another. President Richard Schwan was in charge and as a sensitive leader, particularly one wishing to protect his position, consults widely and was seen here conferring with PP Doreen Pankewich.
Chili for Children Duty Roster May Ann Grahame, Tanya Woroby, Allan Hillsden May Jack Wozniak, Shannon Windrim, Doug Mortin May 18---NO SCHOOL May 25---Lyle Gollnick, Vern Hoyt, Takayoshi Ono President Richard introduced the very fine people who joined him at the Lead Table this included our Guest Speaker, Rotary Ex-change Student Runa Yamaguchi, Jeff Barber and his daughter Emily, Ann Grahame, Jack Wozniak, and Shannon Windrim. Nelson Falkowsky led in the now getting old new version of O Canada, and Shreedhar Jachak was invited to lead Rotary grace. Spring has sprouted a new Leif, and with that, Leif Riesach shared this Thought for the Day, as encouragement to our Japanese Rotary Exchange Student and guest speaker Runa Yamaguchi. The observation is credited to American poet, essayist, and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, Every wall is a door. Nice introduction, Leif, and good counsel to us all. We were delighted to welcome Emily Barber as our lone Guest today. Emily was technical back up for Jeff, who was calling on all support available and was even convinced to get down on his knees it worked! Joyce Butler was in charge of the 50/50 Draw and invited Emily to draw the ticket for today s player. Peter Peters was the lucky drawee. However, before he could get his hand into the marble box, it was necessary to let last week s drawee to feel his way to the green marble (last week it was discovered there was no green marble in the box). So Chris Hefner, the lucky ticket holder last week drew first blue; Peter Peters drew also blue. If this calculation is correct, $32.00 is added to $141.00, the pot would now be worth $ There was a special dessert today as it will be Runa s Birthday on May 27, but rather than wait so long the cake was here, so it needed to be consumed. Following the singing of the Birthday ditty, Runa made the initial cut and had the cake distributed to the well-wishers. Cake distribution occurred while Sergeant-At-Arms Pat extracted alms from the Rotarians SERGEANT AT-ARMS Sergeant Pat tested attendees on their NHL preferences who favoured the Winnipeg Jets a few hands went up? Who did not favour the Winnipeg Jets no hands went up? Members are suspecting trickery! Jean-Marc Nadeau courageopusly supported another team and was fined arguing that the team had a Canadian player did not change the amount of the fine.
Jeff Barber was fined because he brought his daughter Emily, as a protective mechanism, so in the event the technology would fail, he would have someone to blame. Happy dollars came from Ann Grahame as grandson Finn Grahame-King qualified as a Soccer linesman/referee; and grandson Paul won 2 golds and a red seal at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival and is off to Provincial Performing Arts in Edmonton. Recognizing committed dedication President Richard called on Clarence Krause and presented Clarence with a 35 year pin. Clarence joined the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview in 1983 and has served the Club in various roles, but for the better part of the last 2 decades has been part of finance and its accounting. PROGRAM President Richard indicated that today s program would be a double header with Runa Yamaguchi providing us with an overview of her home and family in Japan. Runa would be followed by face-time conversation with our Club s Out- Bound Exchange Student Brigid Malloy in Brazil. Using power-point slides, Runa told us about her homeland, the country of Japan. In response to her question 5 people have been to Japan. Runa showed a map of Japan which is in Eastern Asia, and is an island chain between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan and east of the Korean Peninsula. Runa has a brother who is a lawyer. Her mother is a school teacher and her Father is a civil worker. We learned that Japan has a population of 126 million people with Tokyo beginning their largest city. Runa s hometown is Miyakonojou (population 160,000 like Regina), which is located in an agricultural community, with many of the province's citizens working as farmers. Runa claims these very farmers produce the best beef, chickens and pork in Japan. Runa shared pictures of typical foods that her mother would prepare. Vegetables are important and chicken and sushi are common foods, which seems should be topped off with Japanese Sake. Going to school in Canada is a unique experience with Runa comparing being a Grade 10 student at Campbell Collegiate, like being in a movie. In Japan students wear uniforms they all look the same. Their hair is cut the same and there is no dying of hair, nor make-up. In her school in Japan, the students stayed in the classroom and teachers moved around the school to the various classrooms which is so different her. Runa was in the Philippians on a four-month exchange and it was there that she was exposed to poor people and realized her good fortune. One of the friends she made in the Philippians thought she was rich because she had an iphone 6. Thank you, Runa, for telling your story. It is hoped you will get to meet your Canadian friend while you are in Regina.
A Face-Time with Brigid Malloy in Brazil Thanks to Jeff and Emily Barber, we had an enlightening chat with Brigid in Brazil during which we learned: She is with her 2 nd host family, having spent the initial (and probably extended time) with her first host family because she was so comfortable in their home; The 2 nd host family has been very good as well and it is here that her Portuguese has improved significantly because English is not an option; Brigid has travelled a great deal and last month spent a week on the Amazon, her most amazing life changing occurrence; Has had opportunity to visit other Rotary Districts and next week goes to another City where she will meet other In- Bound Students and participate in the program for the Out- Bound Students for the coming Rotary year; Brigid indicated that youth in Brazil are not unlike youth in Regina they like to hang out with their friends at the mall or the pool; Brigid will complete her Exchange in early June and will be joining her family on a trip to Portugal she believes herself to be sufficiently fluent in Portuguese to serve as the family protector. It was great to speak with this delightful Canadian Rotary Ambassador to Brazil you make us proud, Brigid. Thank you! A ROTARY TIDBIT Photo of Brigid and her parents taken at the Regina Airport on August 25, the day Brigid left for Brazil. Rotary.org is the winner of the prestigious Webby People s Voice Award for best association website. Thank you for casting your vote and sharing your voice! Go to: Rotary International's revamped website has been chosen by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences as one of the best association websites in the world. ANNOUNCEMENTS Resolutions to the District 5550 AGM Club Secretary Allen Hillsden drew member attention to the message they received inviting us to contact our voting delegates to the District Conference AGM (Richard Schwan, John Van Koll and Doug Mortin) to express our views and raising our questions in regard to the proposals.
Lyle Piett Memorial Golf Tournament Organizer John Van Koll was up promoting the Golf Tournament to be held at Tor Hill on July 6, He encouraged us to get invite friends and family to participate in this celebration fund raiser. Will be looking for golfers, prizes, dinner guests and volunteers. Get your information to John. Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) to Australia - Shreedhar Jachak reminded us the RFE to Australia is from March 7-21, The closing date for application is in June, The Australian RFE Team return visit is planned for September/October Contact Shreedhar if you are interested or have a question. Valentine GALA Receipts - Peter Neufeldt Advised that he has receipts for members who made donations in support of the Valentine GALA or purchased tickets to the event. Receipts will be from either the District WCS Foundation if your donation was to the Ripple Effect Program, or Canadian Mental Health if your donation was to support the CMHA program. District Conference Single Day Registration Jeff Barber indicated that a letter will be going out to all Rotarians within easy driving distance of Regina inviting them, if they are not already registered, to register for a single day, either Friday or Saturday. Look forward to having you join us for a day! Jean-Marc Nadeau challenged Friday Night Conference attendees to identify 2 special photographs correct identity could be financial rewarding. Special was not defined so be stealthy! Global Grant For A GOAL FOR GUATE II Project Peter Peters advised members another step forward has been achieved with The Rotary Foundation Canada approving Regina Eastview s application for Government of Canada funding. This has the impact of adding $30,000 to the overall project cost of $125, Clubs in District 5550 will contribute $20, to the project that will install 17 computers in each of 20 schools. COMMENTARY Visual Art Project for Youth and Earth Day Event-April 21 - On April 21 st Margaret and I joined Ann Grahame at the 7 th annual Visual Art Project for Youth and Earth Day 2018 celebration at the McKenzie Art Gallery. For the past 5 years Regina Eastview has supported this initiative sponsored by Multi-Faith Saskatchewan, as it focuses on three components which are foundational to Rotary, The advancement of world understanding, good will and peace. This year students in the some 400 Saskatchewan high schools (Grades 10 to 12) were challenged to direct their creative artistic talents on the theme of, Peace, Unity and Care of the Earth. From the 50 plus submissions received, independent art judges selected the top 15 pieces which were displayed. The Art exhibit will be displayed in a number of places in Saskatchewan including at Regina Eastview. Ann Grahame, Chair of Regina Eastview s Youth Projects Sub-Committee, represented the Club very well in commending the students for their creative work and thanking Multi-Faith Saskatchewan for continuing this initiative which is about celebrating art, faith and spirituality. This is an initiative of which Eastviewian s should be exceedingly proud. For the Regina Eastview ROTOR, I am Peter Peters
