3 Spring SPORTS Preview THURSDAY, MARCH 30, Rangers Softball Coach Daem brings unity and a brand-new field By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer Enterprise photos by Hunter D Antuono Josie Jesson makes a pass during an indoor softball practice at the Park High Gym on March 15, Brooklyn Behm whacks a ball in the batting cage during an indoor softball practice at the Park High School gymnasium on March 15. Amidst the furious local volunteer efforts to revamp the Park High softball field in time for the upcoming spring season, the Lady Rangers have a lot to be excited about this spring. Second-year coach Sean Daem returns at the helm and former Whitworth University softball player Kiera Pattison is on board as the latest addition to the Park coaching staff. Pattison played on the collegiate level for the Pirates in Spokane, Wash. for two years before returning to Montana. As the newest member to the Rangers staff, Pattison hopes to incorporate speed into their training and wants the girls to be more aggressive on offense, standing by the mantra, If you can hit, you don t sit. Daem has worked tirelessly in the offseason and between organizing fundraisers, building new dugouts and ordering new equipment, the ambitious skipper hasn t stopped thinking about Ranger softball. Daem is completely dedicated to this team, Pattison said. After finishing last season 8-12 overall and 2-6 in Central A, Daem hopes to build upon last year s successes and continues to promote unity, providing the team with bracelets that read, One Team. One Goal. One Family. Park High seniors Destiny Ingram, Christal Bigner and Alicia Watson have transitioned into leadership roles and have created a group text for the team to help better include incoming freshmen, furthering the team s philosophy. We have group chat so we can discuss what went wrong in practice, Watson said. Improving communication helps bring the players together so we don t have girls just out there on their own. Paige Gavne, Skye Ingram, Brooklyn Behm and Hailey Gilliam anchor the bullpen for the Lady Rangers, but Daem said the rest of the starting positions remain open. And there is a good reason for that. I train the kids to do multiple things so that they are not set in stone, Daem said. If someone gets hurt or comes out of the game, we can plug somebody else in without a problem. The coaches also emphasized good decision as essential for a success. As a player, Pattison said that the greatest thing she learned in her softball career was to stop, setup and throw. It s probably one of the best life lessons I ve learned so far and it works for everything you do in life, Pattison said. The Lady Rangers open the 2017 Class A softball season at Columbus High School on April 1.

FINAL COUNTDOWN Park High seniors Lauren Emter, Kyndal Pierson and Alexi Speas are back to rewrite the record books for the Lady Rangers By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer The Park High Rangers return with a roster of returning standout student athletes that are planning to make a big impact in the 2017 outdoor track and field season. Leading the pack for the girls is senior Kyndal Pierson, who is coming off a strong individual performance at the Class A state championships after posting personal bests in both the 1600 (5:27.43) and 3200 meter (12:17.55) distance events. Pierson plans to solidify her prep legacy at Park High school before heading off to Carroll College on a full-ride track and field scholarship next year. Senior Alexi Speas is the lone pole vaulter for the girls but currently holds the school record in the event and topped nine feet last year at the Class A state finals. Speas will also be c o m p e t i n g a t t h e Regional Gymnastics Meet with Bozeman s Lone Mountain Gymnastics club. The 2015 state discus champion, senior Lauren Emter, returns in two of the three throwing events. Last year, Emter took third place overall at the state tournament in the discus with a distance of meters and placed seventh in the shot put ( ) for the Lady Rangers. Speedster Madison Patrick enters her final year at Park High hoping to top last season s phenomenal performance at the state tournament. The Ranger senior took second in the 400 meters (1:00.23) and placed fourth in the 200 (26.77) at the Class A Championships. Other top returners are distance runner junior Larissa Saarel, senior Jerrica Martin (100 and 300-meter hurdles events) and junior Samantha Carter-Emter in the shot put, discus and javelin for the Lady Rangers. For the boys, junior Colin Marks will blast off from the starting blocks in the 100, 200 and 400-meter sprints. Marks took third in the 200 (22.63) and fourth in the 100 (11.35) at last year s state competition. Other notable returning athletes are sophomore Matt Netley in the hurdles events. Distance coach Nathan Wulf said the coaching staff, under the direction of head coach Scott Evje, is excited about a wave of freshman that have signed up for track this season, adding that this was the largest freshman class he s seen during his nine years on the Park High coaching staff. Wulf said that the biggestchallenges ahead in the next couple weeks is getting the kids into shape as quickly as possible. We try to go from 0 to 100 but we are also cognizant of minimizing injuries, Wulf said. And in Montana, it s hard to get your muscles warmed up and get a good workout in. So, the short time frame and the w e a t h e r remain the largest obstacles.

7 Spring SPORTS Preview THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 Rangers Tennis Ricketts, Walker bring leadership, depth to young roster By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer After claiming a girls state tennis championship in 2015, Park High tennis coach Kandy Chain plans to make some changes and rebuild the 2017 Rangers squad with fewer girls but a larger than expected turnout for boys. This year s boys team is led by returning top-flight doubles player, junior Jakim Ricketts. Last year, Ricketts alongside his partner and older brother, former all-state Ranger basketball player Laden Ricketts, battled past Sam Sterns and Cameron Johnson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of the Class A state quarterfinals last season only to fall in a quarterfinal match to Simon Marshall and Joey Nichols of Billings Central, 6-2, 6-4. Chain said that Jakim definitely has the experience and athleticism to shift from doubles to singles competition this season for the Rangers. First, I think of where the team will make the most points to win divisionals and state, Chain said. I try to teach the kids both singles and doubles. Junior Ethan Johnson and freshman Brendan Johnson both will start their first year of tennis for Park. On the girls side, junior Taylor Walker is playing in her third year at the varsity singles level. Senior Stormy Knerr returns and junior Katherine Kant joins fresh off the girls basketball season and ready for action on a slightly different court with nets. Chain said she lost a lot of girls last year to graduation, including Emilee Coleman, who finished third in singles at the state tournament after defeating Emily Getts, 6-3, 6-4. But despite losing a significant number of experienced players, Chain said that many of the kids have continued to 7 practice in the offseason. I continue to stress the basics and fundamentals, such as turning sideways and following through, so we are all speaking the same language out there, Chain said. I want them hitting the ball a lot and getting into games. The Ranger girls open the season with a matchup against Class B schools Townsend and Whitehall on March 31 in Livingston. 9 Spring SPORTS Preview THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 Livingston Braves Baseball Reigning Southern A champs still hungry 9 By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer The Livingston Braves American Legion baseball team is coming off an exciting postseason finish last year. The sixth-seeded Braves (27-22) took the playoffs by storm, completing a four-game tournament sweep to claim the Southern A district title. Under the direction of fourth-year coaches Rich Spallone and Bruce Lay, and with the help of returning Class A All-State players Buck Spallone and Zander Petrich, the Braves want to go further. Spallone wrapped up last season leading the Braves with a.436 batting average, including nine home runs, 22 doubles, nine triples, 52 runs scored and 62 RBI. Petrich hit.424 and had three home runs, 54 singles, 62 runs scored and 32 RBI for Livingston. Also returning are Brock Peterson and Ethan Bullock, helping to form a strong core of leadership to guide a much younger Legion squad. Peterson had 44 singles last season, second only to Petrich (67) and Bullock grabbed 32 RBI and scored 35 runs for the Braves. It s real encouraging to see younger kids stepping up, Lay said. They are a little intimidated right now, but they are seeing what it takes to learn to be a bigger, better baseball player. And for the younger crowd, both Spallone and Lay stress the importance of learning the fundamentals. It sounds mundane but that s where it s at, Lay said. Our practices are solid pitching, hitting and fielding and tons of repetition. Spallone agreed and said that the biggest obstacle for the newcomers is adapting to the size and speed. It s a little bit of a learning curve because they were playing ages and all of a sudden they re seeing pitches from a 19-year old kid and that s a pretty big hop, Spallone said. They haven t seen that kind of speed. Deer Lodge dropped out of the conference this year, ensuring a spot for each of the six remaining teams at the district tournament. The Braves are scheduled to play roughly 34 games this season with their season opener on April in Great Falls. BELOW: Brock Peterson, left, and Devin Stallard of Shields Valley practice their baton handoff at the Park High School track on March 24. Enterprise photos by Hunter D Antuono Rebels tight-knit, loaded with talent and experience By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer Alan Peterson begins his 17th year as head coach for the Shields Valley High School track and field team, with first-year assistant coaches Ken Huff and Mark Gangstad joining the staff for the Rebels this season. Senior Brock Peterson will return for his final outdoor track and field season at Shields Valley High School. As a sophomore, Peterson, Kyle Chambers, Cole Fairchild and Daniel Rivera finished third overall in the 4x100 relay at the Class C state championships and Peterson is coming off a personal best of 40 feet and 2 inches in the triple jump last year. Following the 2017 spring season, Peterson will attend Rocky Mountain College on a football scholarship for the Battlin Bears. Junior Morgan Raw handles the throwing events for the Rebels and threw for PRs in the discus (114 9 ) and javelin (118 0 ) as a sophomore. Raw, yet another multi-sport talent from Clyde Park, is also a distance runner, clocking in for the 1600 at 5:18.14 in Senior Devin Stallard will make his track debut this year along with junior Patrick Blair. A fleet of junior girls featuring Emma Doolittle, Jen Fairchild, Brook Russell and Lauren Flatt bring valuable experience to the Lady Rebels. Fairchild returns for the 100, 200 and long jump and Russell is back in the 200, 400 and long jump. Doolittle is the leading leaper for Shields Valley in the long and triple jumps and Flatt will throw the javelin and discus as well as run the 100-meter sprint. Flatt threw for a personal record last year in both the javelin (85 4) and discus (74 10) events. Peterson said that the team might be a little thin in the hurdles and the distance events but they may relocate some kids based on their abilities. The first couple of meets, we ll do some experimenting, Peterson said. We have to take a look at some kids and figure out where they best fit. The Shields Valley track season starts at 10 a.m. on April 1 at the Central Montana Invite in Lewistown.

A LIFELONG GAME Gardiner sophomores Sean Rehmer, Clancy Thomas, Jacob Perius and Chloe Chase tee off for another shot at a Class C state golf title By Jordan P. Ingram Enteprise Staff Writer The 2017 Gardiner golf team is young, but not inexperienced. After a mostly freshman class helped guide the Bruins boys to the 2016 State Class C Golf Tournament, sophomores Jacob Perius, Sean Rehmer and Clancy Thomas are back for another shot at a boys golf state crown. As freshmen, Rehmer finished the two-day state tournament with the best individual score for Gardiner at 194, with Perius (202) and Thomas (203) just behind in the standings. Over the years, we've had some success, Gardiner coach Dave Perius said. This year, these sophomore boys are just a little bigger, little smarter, little stronger and so they are hitting the ball a lot better. Perius, who created the Bruins golf team 13 years ago, said the team will hit the ground running in April, playing one or two matches every week and traveling to meets in Anaconda, Billings, Bozeman, Columbus and Three Forks. For the girls, sophomore Chloe Chase returns after qualifying for the 2016 Class C state tournament with a score of 112. Senior Emma Roberts, freshmen Bailey Furhmann and Christie Webster round out the team for the Lady Bruins. It's nice to have several girls so they have some companionship and learn a lifelong game together, Perius said. "Some years we haven't had any girls at all. For the less experienced players, Perius also emphasizes golf etiquette such as replacing divots, carrying clubs and all the little things that don't involve hitting the ball but are important to the game. After each competition, Perius holds a Q & A with his players to discuss issues on the greens. But mostly, he likes to shadow them during practice to provide first-hand guidance. I ll walk with them while they play and that way its a constant teaching opportunity, Perius said. The Gardiner golf team practices at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch Rising Sun golf course in Emigrant, a beautiful 9-hole closed course offering players plenty of practice time with few distractions. The Bruins will kickoff the 2017 season at Townsend on April 11 and will host a tournament on Thursday April 13 at the Livingston Golf and Country Club.

NEW KIDS OFF THE BLOCKS Gardiner coach Wendy Burke ups the ante in her first year, teaching a host of young athletes a love for the games By Jordan P. Ingram Enterprise Staff Writer The Bruins have brought in first-year head coach Wendy Burke for the 2017 outdoor track and field season. Burke has coached track and field for five years and was assistant coach at Gardiner High School for two years before completely taking the reins. Burke wants to develop kids at a younger age and hopes that training both the junior high and high school kids together will help create a sense of team that begins at an earlier stage. My hope is to start building a program and renew the interest in Gardiner track again, Burke said. I have a lot of enthusiasm for this sport. The team consists of 12 players and juniors Baxter Furhmann and Cayden Rose return for the boys team. Rose had a strong sophomore effort in the javelin after throwing for a personal record 125 feet and nine inches and qualifying for the divisional tournament in both the javelin and the 4x100 relay. Furhmann had a big season last year after posting personal bests in the javelin (100 7 ), long jump (13 11 ) and the triple jump (30 21/2 ). Senior Libby Burke leads the Lady Bruins after competing at the 2016 Western C Divisionals in the triple jump (29 10) and in the 4x100 relay with teammates PJ Thomas, Emma Burke and Abigail Sullivan, finishing in seconds. Coach Wendy Burke said that there is also a group of young freshmen boys and girls that are eager to participate in myriad events, including relays and distance running. We have pretty young team this year but everyone that is here really wants to be here, Burke said. They have a really good sense of what it means to be on a team which I think is important in track and often overlooked. The Bruins track and field team will travel to Columbus for a tournament on April 1.
