1 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HAPPENINGS COMMUNITY NEWS Students and staff helped the community by paying it forward. FBLA Coat Drive SGA Canned Food Drive Shop with an Eagle SCHS Cheerleaders Our Cheer program has done it again. They managed to collect and donate over 6 garbage bags full of wonderfully wrapped toys, clothes & other gifts for "2" needy families and "4" individual children, at Sanders Elementary School!

2 Teens, Trails, and Trenches: For over three days at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, students built a culvert system and moved a hiking and horseback trail in order to alleviate flooding. The students not only were able to get an up-close look at the Civil War battlefield, but also were taught that working together can make a difference. The SCHS participation was initiated by Andy Cole, a SCHS history teacher. DRAMA CLUB AND TRI-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society volunteers at the Silver Comet Trail Marathon FINE ARTS SCHS THEATER PROGRAM performed The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe FINE ARTS HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR combined the efforts of Drama, Orchestra, Band, and Chorus BIG CHICKEN CHOIR SHOWCASE For the second year, our school has been invited to perform at the Big Chicken Choir Holiday Show. ATLANTA FEDERAL RESERVE NATIONAL BANK Representatives from SCHS Choir performed at the Holiday Luncheon. They received a standing ovation at the end of the performance! Students were told, Your group is among the best we ve had here in the past few years!

3 STUDENTS District 12 Honor Choir: SCHS students Kennedy Flowers, Chantal Oru, Keyona Walker, and Brianna Watts represented SCHS in the annual District 12 Honor Chorus Governors Honors State interviews: Two students made it to the State Governor s Honor Program HP interviews in Biology. Lorlorwu Bansah Oladele Osisami Congratulations to Celia Fischer Celia s logo design was chosen as the logo for the South Cobb Redevelopment Authority. She received $250 for the Graphic Arts Club, 4 tickets to Six Flags, and an tour of animation at Turner Network. Celia also designed the Courier banner. Homecoming Queen SCHS STUDENTS had the District s largest increase in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards. 98% or more students passed or exceeded this statewide exam. Who s Who luncheon at Pasta Bella Cultural Exchange Program: Ms. Katina Howell, a business education teacher, Bre Ann Basket, and Malik Smith participated in a cultural exchange program. They spent 19 days in Europe and experienced the cultures of France, Italy, and Greece.

They are Runner-up in Region 4-AAAAAA and have had the most wins in SCHS history. Rebecca Collins: 1st Team All-Region 1st Team All-County 2nd Team All-State Asia Moore, Brittany Rhodes, and Jay White: 2nd Team All-Region Keajuana Crymes and Terylin Harris: Honorable Mention All-Region COACHES Four of our coaches coached the Senior Bowl Ed Koester Chris Van Meter Sherrod Rainge Brad Trout FOOTBALL PLAYERS play in the Senior Bowl Graben Higgins Jeremiah Alphabet Ryan Sumner Niles Hamilton Chauncey Ingram Stephon Masha Tarrance Wells Chris Simon Assistant Principal and former coach, Coach Stines was inducted into the Cobb County Senior Bowl Hall of Honor. Coach Stines has had a great impact on Cobb County Athletics for over 30 years! CHEERLEADERS The Varsity Cheerleaders earned the Top Banana, Leadership Award, and Camp Champs during UCA Summer Cheer Camp

5 CLUBS & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES DANCE TEAM participated in the Battle of the Lines where they received the gold award. FLYING ACES attended the College Fair and Bank of America Classic Game at the Georgia Dome PROJECT SUCCESS launched its inaugural year as a character building club for 10th grade students. FLY ZONE Launch

6 LOS VOZ LATINA CLUB (HISPANIC CLUB) The club celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. La Fiesta del Dia de Los Muertos was celebrated with music, food, and dancing. Art students enhanced the room with Dia de los Muertos portraits by Hispanic and non-hispanic students. Exito Emory Twelve students participated at this event which allowed students the opportunity to ask questions regarding admission into college. They also participated in a project of choosing an application that met the requirements to enter Emory. Latin Leaders Youth Conference

8 CHICK-FIL-A SPIRIT NIGHT Administrators served parents and students dinner with a portion of the price donated to the school. LEADERSHIP CONCLAVE The school hosted its first leadership symposium which identified leaders in our school. Speakers came and motivated our school leaders. SAT / ACT PREP SCHS offered free SAT Prep to students, as well as an opportunity to participate in Project 2400.

9 TEACHERS CONTINUING TO LEARN & GROW Jennifer Petrusa obtained her Masters Degree in Adolescent Education / English. Kamisha Polk obtained her Masters Degree in Educational Technology. Jason James obtained his Doctorate in Educational Leadership. James Rowlenson attended the Common Core Summit. Yolan DeRosa received and IMPACT Grant for her courses. Jackie Smiley and Gaelyn Warren received IMPACT Grants for $2,000 for their respective programs. The Media Center was awarded $1,000 to buy books from the Sisters in Crime mystery writers organization. Eva Becerra attended a course in Spain on Interculturality and Human Rights. She will volunteer for a Human Rights Foundation in Madagascar next summer. Louise White attended a 3 day workshop focusing on the Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, at the High Museum of Art. Sue De Rosa attended the Oxford Institute for Environmental Science in Oxford, GA; traveled throughout south Georgia with the Teacher Conversation Workshop; worked with the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Environmental Research Project at Sapelo Island with researchers and other teachers. Ellen Katzwitz received the 2013 Georgia Bio Teach of the Year Award for her work in STEM teaching and support of the biotechnology pathway. Gaelyn Warren received a Lowe s Toolbox for Education grant totally $3,000 from the Lowe s Charitable and Educational Foundation to use for the Spring musical.
